So yeah ... that got me out of the bushes ... in a hurry.
Anyway, I don't want to derail this thread by discussing anything that might be construed as anything less than absolutely positive about this critical and incredibly significant post - I mean when the day is over it's as obvious as that clever little reference that you made...I of course caught the Carly Simon reference since when was vanity more clearly a reference to just one more of my fabulous traits which when coupled with my arrogance just completes the package.
The Benaishtart's ... really I wouldn't have thought they even knew of me. I mean I knew I had made quite an impression around here in my earlier days ...but can you believe it...out of the blue another thread that was clearly all about me. I guess one just never knows. Now the first thread which started innocently enough was really quite sometime ago but it was a special moment and day when I realized just how much the folks around here thought of me...I was warmed in my bosom like never before. A walk down memory lane never hurts and I'll bet the the Tarts might enjoy knowing a bit more about me to see if I can fit into their little neighborhood - you'll have to read a few posts but it is very illuminating:

Re: Why are Utahns so vain?
My theory about Utah is that virtually everything weird going on there can be explained by the fact that the culture is so homogeneous.
All the stats you hear about how Utah is the highest in this or the lowest in that, it's all stuff that is prevalent (or not) among educated, middle class white people. Because that's what you have in Utah. They don't have all the other demographics to balance it out. So take something like anti-depressant use. It's not that Utahans are more depressed than the rest of the country, it's that this is something that affluent white people are big on, and Utah happens to have one of the highest concentrations of that demographic.
While I was living in Utah I always wondered about how crowded everything was, when there weren't really that many people living there, compared to other places I had lived. Then I realized it only seemed crowded because everyone there was like me and we always wanted to do the same things at the same time. Fads and trends catch on like crazy in Utah, because everyone is attracted to the same kinds of stuff.
I do think that the homogeneity leads to more competitiveness and more conspicuous consumption, keeping up with the Joneses, and maybe the kind of vanity the OP cites. So it wouldn't surprise me if there is even more cosmetic surgery than is accounted for even by demographics. But I still think that's a function of the homogeneous culture. It would be a fascinating social study.

https://religionnews.com/2017/03/17/mor ... ry-or-not/With regard to the first two questions, it’s good to remind ourselves that just because a city becomes a medical mecca for something doesn’t mean that it’s always local residents who are taking advantage of it. In this article by Salt Lake City plastic surgeon York Jay Yates, he estimates that a fifth of his business is from out-of-staters who come to SLC because all the competition among doctors there has driven down prices. Whereas breast augmentation apparently costs between $6,000 and $10,000 elsewhere, the cost in Utah is only about $4,000. (For the record, he says he does see a lot of Mormon clients at his practice, especially young mothers who would like to get their bodies back after childbearing is over.)
Good article. We're no different than everyone else. Just a cheaper state.

According to the article Yahtzee posted above, “Utah Mormons’ rate of cosmetic surgery isn’t outsized at all. Among all Utah Mormons, 3.7% have had plastic surgery, slightly less than the 4% national average for all Americans. For Utah women, it’s 5.6%. Let's try an exercise. Try to make an equal number of complaints about men. Once you do that, try to stop caring about other people's personal decisions. Let me know how it goes!
So, I guess that theory is blown out of the water.

Besides, the "theory" I suggested Benny investigate is the correlation between Mormon wives having cosmetic surgery, and their husbands watching porn (which also bears out with the dozen or so women from my ward I mentioned above, sadly), which you nor anyone else has "blown out of the water".

So, I guess that theory is blown out of the water. As for me, I personally know a dozen or so women in my little Midwest ward alone who have had cosmetic surgery (almost all were boob jobs, and/or tummy tucks - a couple had some facial things done, nose job, etc.). So, just going by the actual facts of the women I know first-hand, the stats are pretty high.

Where I'm from in California, it's much higher. So I disagree about personal stories proving a statistic.
The article even says, yes, there's still plenty of vanity. It's just not statistically significant.

I don't live in Utah (although most of the people in our ward are from there). I only know one non-member who has had cosmetic surgery (she's a Catholic, not that it matters). Personal stories don't "prove" a statistic - they don't disprove them either. I wonder if you lived in the heart of Salt Lake County (instead of college county), you would know more women who had had surgery. There is a reason that little (population-wise), Mormon Utah is #6 in the entire nation for the number of plastic surgeons. Re: Why are Utahns so vain?
This is purely anecdotal, but there are only two women in my ward (I'm not in Utah) that have had "work done" and they are both from Utah County. Both are in their 30's.
It's a shame some husbands can't love their wives for who they are rather than what they look like. Especially after they've given them a healthy posterity.

Re: Why are Utahns so vain?
To be more clear, the dozen or so LDS women I know who have had cosmetic surgery do not all still currently live in our ward - some have moved away, some remain here - but over the space of years that we've lived in this ward, yes, I have known/know at least a dozen women who have had it. No doubt there are more that have had surgery that I'm not aware of - I only speak of the ones I know of first-hand.EmmaLee wrote: ↑March 12th, 2019, 10:38 amI don't live in Utah (although most of the people in our ward are from there). That's easy, RocknRoll - they told me. In case you were unaware, most women talk about these things very openly (at least the women I know do) - some even post about it on social media, others have shared it in RS, others have told me directly in personal conversations. As EmmaLee mentioned, women talk about things amongst themselves that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Sex life and behaviors, cosmetic surgery, who in the ward is stepping out on their spouse, and of course whose husband has a porn addiction.... I get to hear all this second hand from my wife, of course. I would never hear it from their husbands (partly because I don't hang out with them, I guess....).
