You can no longer use the word "Mormon"
It's going to be extremely difficult to not use the word Mormon
In the past if asked about my religion I would say I belong to the COJCOLDS, this produces a quizzical reaction, but when I say Mormon they instantly know, but this has to end
Where do we go from here?

So how do you pronounce COJCOLDS? Cog-Colds... sounds like 'cockles' as in cockles of the hearts... to me. It's Irish for sure!Dusty52 wrote: ↑March 10th, 2019, 12:33 am It's going to be extremely difficult to not use the word Mormon

Mormon Mormon Mormon.
What nonsense.
It reminds me of Bush the Elder's nonsense about broccoli on the White House menu.
If God was offended by the word Mormon, we would have known it long ago. It would have been made clear to us long ago.
It's just some personal fetish or bugaboo.

We cannot dictate what other people call us, or what they understand us to be.
I suspect this will pass when President Nelson does.

( as Mormons) respondedd to it for decades...
We moved awhile back, and one of my kiddos decided to start going by his middle name at his new school. His transition to a new name was about as well thought out as Rusty's name change (my son decided to go with a new name in second period after we'd been at the new school 2 days...)
Although most people now refer to him as middle name, the family still calls him first name. It's no big deal, but cause awkward communication issues with "new" people.

Re: You can no longer use the word "Mormon"
Let's not over-think it.
"And those who did belong to the church were faithful; yea, all those who were true believers in Christ took upon them, gladly, the name of Christ, or Christians as they were called, because of their belief in Christ who should come." Alma 46:15
If you ask me, calling us "Mormons" further muddies the waters, it's like we have two names for our church. We are simply picking one of the many names we are called, the one we prefer, and ultimately it will lead to less confusion. I have never liked calling myself a "Mormon" because what does that mean to other people? They have no idea or if they do it is "polygamy, beards, weird underwear, Coca-Cola"
The fact of the matter is that if we ultimately believe that we are practicing true Christianity, then we can rightly call ourselves "Christians" especially in this world where Christian churches are losing members and diluting their beliefs. Ultimately, we are still going to have to have a conversation about the restoration, etc.
But there are many, many, many Christian sects that call themselves Christians and have wildly different doctrinal beliefs on things.
"And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel." 3 Nephi 27:8
In the end, doctrine trumps tradition.
What conversation would you prefer to have:
CONVERSATION A:
Q: What religion are you?
A: Mormon.
Q: Oh, so you don't drink Coca-Cola and stuff then right?
A: We can drink Coke but we try to avoid unhealthy things.
Q: You wear those underwear right?
CONVERSATION B:
Q: What religion are you?
A: Christian.
Q: Oh, me too, what church do you attend?
A: The Church of Jesus Christ.
Q: Which one is that?
A: We believe that Jesus has restored his church and gospel and has revealed many things that have been lost.
I think this gives us an opportunity to change the nature of our conversations.

Re: You can no longer use the word "Mormon"
I'm seldom asked nowadays, but conversations and my answers tend to be thus:
Them: What's your religion?
Me: I'm a disciple of Jesus
Them: But what church do you go to?
Me: Oh, the LDS church.
Them: Oh, so you're a Mormon?
Me. Yeah.
Them: What's your religion?
Me: I'm a disciple of Jesus
Them: But what church do you go to?
Me: Oh, the LDS church.
Them: Oh, so you're a Mormon?
Me. Yeah.

Didn't President Nelson try to change the name of the church in the 1990s?

Re: You can no longer use the word "Mormon"
Apart from some slight issues with naming in Joseph Smith's time, the church was always known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. So... no, technically President Nelson didn't try to change the name of the church in the 1990's.

Re: You can no longer use the word "Mormon"
Elder Nelson was just repeating what many previous leaders had said - use the correct name of the Church and the correct name for the members of the Church.
George Albert Smith, Harold B Lee, Marion G Romney, Gordon B Hinckley, Boyd K Packer and Dallin H Oaks all gave similar talks or made statements emphasising the correct name of the Church.
Now that Russell M Nelson presides he has made it his personal mission to bring about this change in behaviour - there is no change in the name of the church.

New official video from the church just came out, called "13 Mormon Beliefs".
