Quotes from Lord of the Rings
I would like to hear of quotes from LOTR that seem relevant to the gospel, if there is a topic about this already please provide a link.
I found one this morning as I was listening to my audiobook and I would like to kick this off with this one and ask for more if you know of any:
Elrond in the Council of Elrond said the following and this blew my mind: "It is perilous to study too deeply the arts of the Enemy, for good or for ill. But such falls and betrayals, alas, have happened before."

Re: Quotes from Lord of the Rings
I love Sam - a nice quote that reflects how I feel about Lord of the Rings as well as the Plan of Salvation and our life here on earth.

“It's like in the great stories Mr Frodo
The ones that really mattered
Full of darkness and danger they were,
and sometimes you didn't want to know the end Because how could the end be happy
How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened
But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow
Even darkness must pass
A new day will come
And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer
Those were the stories that stayed with you
That meant something”

Re: Quotes from Lord of the Rings
J.R.R. Tolkien: Lord of the rings, Gandolph:
“So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
“Don't be a fool Mr. Baggins if you can help it.”
“I fear I am beyond your comprehension.”
-
But this is terrible!’ cried Frodo. ‘Far worse than the worst that I imagined from your hints and warnings. O Gandalf, best of friends, what am I to do? For now I am really afraid. What am I to do? What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature, when he had a chance!’
‘Pity? It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded, Frodo. Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With Pity.’
‘I am sorry,’ said Frodo. ‘But I am frightened; and I do not feel any pity for Gollum.’
‘You have not seen him,’ Gandalf broke in.
‘No, and I don’t want to,’ said Frodo. I can’t understand you. Do you mean to say that you, and the Elves, have let him live on after all those horrible deeds? Now at any rate he is as bad as an Orc, and just an enemy. He deserves death.’
‘Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.

PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.
GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?
GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.
GANDALF: No. No, it isn't

The Dark Lord has Nine. But we have One, mightier than they: the White Rider. He has passed through the fire and the abyss, and they shall fear him. We will go where he leads.

Re: Quotes from Lord of the Rings
I know thinker already quoted this, but this is my favorite quote by far:
Frodo: 'It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance.'
Gandalf: 'Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.' Frodo: 'I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.'
Gandalf: 'So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides that of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, in which case you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

Re: Quotes from Lord of the Rings
Technically from the first Hobbit movie, but still pretty good quote:
Gandalf: Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.

Re: Quotes from Lord of the Rings
From Gandalf, in the book: "What do you mean?" he said. "Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?" and "What a lot of things you do use Good morning for!" said Gandalf. "Now you mean that you want to get rid of me, and that it won't be good till I move off.”

Re: Quotes from Lord of the Rings
I forgot about & really like that last part. When going through hell, it’s important to keep in mind that “other forces at work in this world, besides that of evil.” In fact, I believe that opposition is what helps us become wiser & stronger. And “encouraging thoughts” are plentiful and available for the taking!Alaris wrote: ↑March 7th, 2019, 7:45 pm I know thinker already quoted this, but this is my favorite quote by far:

“It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish.” -Samwise
“Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

‘Folk seem to have been just landed in [adventures], usually — their paths were laid that way. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn’t. And if they had, we shouldn’t know, because they’d have been forgotten.’ – Samwise Gamgee
‘It is useless to meet revenge with revenge: it will heal nothing.’ – Frodo Baggins
‘Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.’ – Aragorn
‘It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succor of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.’ – Gandalf<
Your time will come. You will face the same Evil, and you will defeat it.”
– Arwen
A wizard (The Lord) is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.
