Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
This thread exposes a fundamental lack of understanding of communication with the Spirit in regard to blessings.
I'll give you an example from my life.
I was to give a dying woman a blessing. I was a relatively new member of the Church of Jesus Christ. The woman was a friend of my wife, but was also an inactive member.
What do you tell a dying person?
I prayed and went over with the Spirit the things I was supposed to tell her. I picked the most Spiritual man from my ward to accompany me. We went. When the time came to give the blessing I chickened out and anointed her. My Partner gave a blessing and as he was about to close he stopped for about 20 seconds. He then proceeded to say the words of my blessing WORD FOR WORD as the Spirit had instructed me to say them.
WORD FOR WORD without one word missed or spoken out of order.
The Lord's worthy and anointed Servants who are set apart, as Patriarchs, who are by the way, God's tuning fork, don't make mistakes.
Every word they utter in a blessing will come to pass. We may not know how but they will.
Do you believe any less about what the Prophets of old spoke of?
I'll give you an example from my life.

Firstly, thanks for sharing your story, secondly,
I would suggest this thread is demonstrating an important understanding of the dynamic between a patriach and a candidate, it offers an alternate view, with people airing what is their reality!

I must say that at moments in my life I've read my blessing and things stood out to me, it seemed like I'd never seen before, on one occasion a statement I read kept me on my mission

Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
I am a book collector, and once, in a second hand store, while looking in the book dept I came across,of all things, some LDS scriptures as a large quad. Of course I opened it up, enjoying the scriptural underlining of the former owner and all his comments in the margin. Then suddenly, lo and behold, I found a PB folded up in the back. Of course, I read it and it was several pages long typed in fine print on both sides.
I stood there, leaning against the bookcase utterly and completely enthralled by what I read. Time stood still and it seemed as if somewhere angels were singing
I guessed that the owner, a man, was now deceased, and his totally inactive and disrespectful children just threw his stuff into a pile and sold it to this store, not caring a thing about it, although I hoped it might have been a careless accident, and they didn't realize what they did.
Anyway, this PB went into great detail about the premortal existence, like everything you ever wanted to know. Reading this seriously enlightened me on the record in Abraham. About the guy, he had a very impressive premortal life. WOW. Like he was actually on the council of the Gods, a hero in standing by Jehovah as the Son of God, and had a great deal of Priesthood authority before coming to earth. Who he was, his importance and high place among the Gods before he came to this earth was just amazing I mean just AMAZING to read about and just thoroughly wonderful. Before this guy was born, he was seriously reeking with glory. Holy Cow.
It was a long blessing, like I said, going on and on in this manner. But when you got to the last page and the last paragraph, you got to see why he was told all this stuff about himself and the premortal life.
As far as his mortal life, he was blessed with absolutely nothing. Not health, long life, a temple marraige, righteous posterity or blessings of the earth and no spiritual gifts or church leadership positions. You name the list of usual suspects, and they were all absent. There were no warnings, or encouragements either. He was basically told he would be a nobody on the earth and would have nothing to distinguish him, but would have enough to eat if he always shared what he had with others. He was to read the scriptures often, he would serve a mission and he would have children. This was all very short, to the point, and ended with a kind of a nothing more than "see you in the resurrection, til then, hang in there".
This changed the way I viewed everyone in the church and just turned me upside down. I also realized what a blessing it really was for someone with such a track record in the 1st estate to be placed in such humble circumstances. He was really protected from so many things of the world. I once had a SP tell me that he thought the greatest spirits were not the ones in the visible leadership positions but the nobodies on the ward level who don't stand out and are never missed when they move.
My own PB is very short and typed in large print, and it repeats itself over and over again. Nothing like this guys.

Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
Wow, that's interesting.
The only thing my PB says that could be unique is that I have work to do that nobody else can do. Since I feel like I have done very little of significance in the church or world I really wonder what this is or if I didn't already blow the chance to do this work.
To the OP: did you follow the council to read D&C 138? If so, you will recall there was a grand meeting in the Spirit World where the spirits of the faithful dead waited for the advent of the Savior. But that's not all: we are told that many of the great leaders of the church prior to this vision were also present. I strongly believe that all of us were present there.

What a lovely story about a ordinary man, you were meant to meet him that day through his p/b, it reveals a lot about the man that he kept his blessing in his scriptures! I wonder why you experienced this? it certainly changed your life first and foremost secondly perhaps you could do something for him, see if his family history has been researched and ordinances have been carried out in the temple! These things happen for a God given reason! Just a suggestion

Mine scared me. I was unprepared and too young. I have had times where I doubt. Mine talks about children a lot. I stuggled with infertility for 8 years. I had 6 miscarriages and my daughter was stillborn. I couldn't understand why it would say what it said when I was dealing with infertility.
Mine did say that I would meet a young man. It made my mom shut up about all the local boys. She wanted me to marry her friend's son. She thought he was great. She never went to school with him.

I married my husband, who is not from my hometown. I had 2 children before secondary infertility. I was blessed with two more. I owe my high risk OB much. He was amazing and asked me to give him a chance to help me have a baby. He was crying when my last son was born. He wiped my tears away. It was amazing. It took lots of work, medicines and tests to have him. His little sister came right him. I was informed that I was done having babies. My body couldn't take any more babies. I am not made to have babies. We will be looking into foster to adopt when our littles ones are older.
Mine also talks about things that I have to do work out my salvation. If I don't do it, then it must remain undone. It was scary as a young teen. It still is to a point.

Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
I have thought about these very issues myself. Many P.B.'s are several pages of promises that when it comes right down to it are just a portion of some of the promises which are already promised to each of the faithful in the scriptures. Having said that, and if that is the case in your life, as it is in mine, I just work to be happy with it. After all, what more could anyone ever ask for than to have a Father in Heaven who unconditionally loves us, to eventually share everything He has with us, including the presence of both Himself, and also His Son (our Lord).
Now that I have said that, I am about to tell you a true experience which can show us just what can be accomplished in the Lord's service by a servant of the Lord, patriarch or not. This is from my neighbor, a friend in my ward, who lives on the next street over from me. His father was a stake patriarch. This patriarch was asked to bless a little girl who was in a comma.
This is what he said in the blessing, on the morrow, you will awake and be healed. The following day she awoke from her comma, And yes, she recovered. This man had faith in the Savior, courage, and followed the spirit. How about that as a faith promoting story from the Lord, and a witness to His work.

Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
My patriarchal blessing is quite short and to the point. It is the direction I have needed: focus on being a mother.
One day I was talking to our stake patriarch and he told me that any blessing given to you by your father is an extension of your patriarchal blessing. Those blessings have been more detailed. If giving blessings by the spirit is a spiritual gift then my dad has it.

I have one comment in my blessing which ive never understood:
"Your future wife is preparing herself as of now through her deliberations in the church"
I married a non-member!
Does that mean I've married the wrong person?

Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
I don't know. My blessing says some things of my work that doesn't seem to apply to my current work. I know that this is a bad comparison since it is easier to switch work (and it is probable that I do that sometime) than switch a wife. Yet I feel you, since because of my blessing I sometimes wonder if I'm in the wrong business. However, if you felt good about the decision to marry your wife and if you are happy, you shouldn't worry about that too much.

Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
No, I don't think you married the wrong person.
Patriarchal Blessings are not just for this life, but for our lives in the eternities as well, so the fact that she is a non-member now does not preclude the possibility that she becomes one later. I'd suggest she's carrying out her 'deliberations' in this life.
If she's not a member right now, so you aren't married for eternity yet and I'd say she's probably observing the way you live the gospel and learning about it. She can still become your eternal companion, so I'd say just love her with all your heart and be a great husband to her:)

Re: Unusual things said in Patriarchal Blessings
My husband and I both have some minor wording in our blessings that may indicate we married someone other than our blessing stated. However, if we look at the wording in such a way, then it sits well with us both. Either way, im not too worried, lol.
