Thanksgiving Proclamation, 3 October 1789
Thanksgiving Proclamation

[New York, 3 October 1789]

By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed—to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord—To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

“GENERAL ORDERS, HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK,
MAY 15, 1776:

“Friday [May] 17th, Instant to be observed as a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer, humbly to supplicate the mercy of Almighty God, that it would please him to pardon all our manifold sins and transgressions, and to prosper the Arms of the United Colonies, and finally establish the peace and freedom of America, upon a solid and lasting foundation.”

This was not a simple or formal prayer. It was the recognition of a covenant relationship. It was a call to repentance and righteousness, even those things that would bring the blessings of heaven. He followed up the call shortly thereafter with another, which declared that “the fate of unborn Millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army. . . . Let us therefore rely upon the goodness of the Cause, and the aid of the Supreme Being, in whose hands Victory is.”http://www.ldsliving.com/2-Times-George ... ry-content

Washington led only a ragtag group of civilian soldiers numbering well under half the count of British troops. Worse yet, Washington did not have even a single warship at his disposal(at the battle of Long Island).

But the great leader had a weapon on his side more powerful than the British army could imagine: faith. In July 1776, he called for chaplains in each regiment to ensure that the soldiers “attend carefully upon religious exercises.” Keeping the Sabbath was emphasized, and one observant New Yorker, unaccustomed to seeing a pious group of soldiers, wrote of his surprise to see how Washington’s men attended prayers “evening and morning regularly.” Washington’s officers also documented how they held prayer services and Bible studies.

The above article is well worth the read. Thank God for these early Americans and what they did, and sacrificed.

I know pres Lincoln made thanksgiving a national holiday, do you know if he gave an address about it? And thanks for posting this, it helps remind us to trust him and have faith that he does look out for us, when we look to him.

That was very interesting, it says that a woman had been writing the presidents for 15 years to urge that thanksgiving be made a fixed national holiday, up till then the states celebrations varied. Other presidents ignored her petition but lincoln acted. I also noticed that he asked for forgiveness for our mistakes and divine blessings. I hope that pres trump might do the same sometime, I think we as a nation need to repent and remember our god and acknowledge him once again. At least that's what I pray for. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Go: Washington
What a witness to our Book of Mormon.

This is The Promise Land.

We must understand what is to come when our country no longers recognizes that God is King of the soil we stand on.

We need to make sure our hearts and houses are in order. I truly believe this country is going to go through a struggle like its never seen . The only way to endure what is come with success is:

Moroni 10

30 And again I would exhort you that ye would come unto Christ, and lay hold upon every good gift, and touch not the evil gift, nor the unclean thing.

31 And awake, and arise from the dust, O Jerusalem; yea, and put on thy beautiful garments, O daughter of Zion; and strengthen thy stakes and enlarge thy borders forever, that thou mayest no more be confounded, that the covenants of the Eternal Father which he hath made unto thee, O house of Israel, may be fulfilled.

32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be eperfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.

33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.

34 And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to arest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air, to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead. Amen.

THE END

George Washington, another hated old white guy, by many in America. Someone who did far more for them than they may ever know or will accept. Happy Thanksgiving!
