Is it Evil to Say Gosh?

Post by XEmilyX »

But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil

Does this mean that words like gosh, dang it, crap, are bad?
Any takes on what this means?
Thanks

heck no! :D ok more seriously....

I think the above is referring to giving oaths. For instance, saying things like "I swear it is true on my mother's grave." Just say yes or no, have fidelity to what you say. I believe the above forbids swearing by the heavens or the earth, or by your own head.

I think the thought is, if you get in the habit of swearing something is true "by something", then the assumption develops that if you simply say something you don;t really mean it. The oath becomes the signature that you really meant it.

Better to always mean everything you say. then your word is your bond. No oaths or swearing necessary.

Here in England we say "damn" and "hell" all the time, even from the pulpit!
It's not unusual for someone to start their testimony by saying they've had a hell of a month and they're glad it's damn well over.
They're not bad words here. In fact, they're repeatedly mentioned in the scriptures.

Swearing and taking the lords name in vain are not one and the same. Glenn Beck had an interesting take on this: Priesthood assignments result from your ordination and by not doing them, you are taking in vain the name by which priesthood authority was granted.

In particular I believe this passage is talking about oaths.

In regards to swearing - my personal opinion is this taking the Lord's name in vain = bad and saying the F word = bad. Why you ask? Because the first is a commandment and the second is making a mockery of a sacred act (it is generally not used in a positive light). All other words are only really considered swear words because the "elite" spoke differently than the "poor" folk back in the day. It is really interesting when you look at historical reasons of why words are considered swear words. Definitionally I don't see a difference between "$#!%" and "Crap" Further, it is the intent behind the words. So logically if you are against the "S" word or any other word for that matter, you should be against saying crap or other similar words because the intent or anger behind them is the same. I hope that made sense.

I should add that I also try to avoid speaking "swear" words around those that might be offended. I try to follow Paul the apostles counsel and avoid the appearance of evil and try to avoid offending others - even if it isn't inherently evil. However, I do swear from time to time to myself or those with whom I know won't be offended. THough I am toning it down these days for my own self. I either say it or try to say nothing.

I like the term “sentence enhancers” over “bad words”. Haha.

If someone asked me that question in person I would immediately and sincerely answer: "I sure as hell hope not!"

God is not the Lords name, so even saying the word God in vain is not taking the name of God in vain, let alone the word gosh.

This is a fair point. When the "Name" is referenced on the Ten commandments, it's referring to YHWH. Which no one even knows now.

Still, even if "God" is not His proper Name, people still think of it that way so I like to take care in how I use it.

The real meaning of taking the name of the Lord in vain is to speak in his name without his instruction or direction. We need to be more careful about how we use "in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen". I have heard people speak the biggest load of #$%^ and then attach, "in the name of Jesus Christ, amen" to the end. Now that is taking the name of the Lord in vain.
