I think this is a very thought provoking discussion, but hope we can make it a kinder discussion. As per thought sins, I guess it's no coincidence that I read this passage this morning:"But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire."
If I had to create a "hierarchy of naughtiness", it would go like this (from bad to worst):Alma 12:14
For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us..."
Bad - Thoughts
Worse - Words
Worst - Works
The criteria for bad/worse/worst is the amount of effort it takes to repent from it. A thought can be repented of between me and God. If I have spoken ill to/of someone, then my repentance must involve that person as well as God. Worst yet, if I have sinned against someone to an extreme degree, then repentance will involve the victim, God, and possibly a bishop or church council.
In no way is any sin justified or "innocent" - all must be repented of. But the steps required for said repentance are more difficult the further along it has progressed from "thought" to "action".
Does that make sense?
