Charles W. Stayner, Orson F. Whitney, and Multiple Mortal Probations

Dennis B. Horne has written an interesting article about a false prophet. The post can be found on Horne's blog, but it is also cross-posted in FairMormon's blog:

The article is based mostly on Orson F. Whitney's journal entries. For some time, Whitney was persuaded by Charles W. Stayner, who was a self-proclaimed prophet. Horne compares him to Denver Snuffer. Stayner believed in reincarnation (that is the term used in Whitney's journal, a more accurate description would be 'multiple mortal probations'). Stayner's and Whitney's activities were revealed to the church leaders. Prophets and apostles condemned the doctrine of multiple mortal probations time after time in a clear manner.

I recommend the article for those interested in church history. It is quite long, but worth reading.

Yep, history repeats itself. I was thinking of Jim Harmston and TLC in 90's.
