The Significance of Numbers in Scripture

Post by Dusty52 »

I have often wondered about the significance of numbers in scripture, the numbers I am thinking about are:
3
7
12
30
Anymore?

1 unity
2 cents
4 directions
12, 24, 70 & 144
40

1000 multiplier

33 & 38 ?

46 represents April 6

Not long ago I decided to buy something, but only yesterday did I decide the quantity. 40 may be literal, and means complete. Therefore I’ll buy 40,000 and 6,000 more that I may sell, but retain 40k for several years.

I would say that the Nephite record system and therefore the Israelite records system would place it very high in importance. So much so that Mormon and Moroni used extensive valuable space to include several calendar systems, monetary equivalencies, elapsed time, durations of epochs / events, ages and other numerology.

One of the things that brought this to my attention, was after noting the inclusion of numbers that I would normally classify as useless fluff in the Book of Mormon, and then reading about how space was limited and very precious on the plates, I read this:

I found it absolutely fascinating, and very compelling.
