Re: Our Mother in Heaven
The most common answer is that Heavenly Father doesn't want her name tarnished, so He doesn't speak of Her directly.
The reasons why vary, but one that I've found was that in ancient times the Caananites and other semites has a pantheon of gods, of whom there was a great over-god, called El... and he had a wife called Ashara (or something like that). Well guess what. El is the singular name for Eloheim... see where I am going with this, and Eloheim was the father of three sons, one of which was YHVH, the God of Israel. So right there, we established a clear connection between the cannanite pantheon and the Hebrew religion.
Well, Ashrara you'd think would get a lot of respect as the wife of the Most High God right? Nope. She was the goddess of fertility, and the religious ceremonies for her were not... exactly... appealing or pleasant.
So yeah. God from then on kept his mouth shut about her to prevent people from worshiping her as a Fertility goddess, which God sees as disrespectful and distasteful. His wife deserves better than that.

Re: Our Mother in Heaven
I've never been able to accept that explanation. Does that mean that She is somehow a lesser god and needs a strong male god to look after her? Or is she a higher god and thus more holy and that is the reason she needs that protection?
I think that Paulsen and Pulido ask the same questions in their famous BYU Studies article "A Mother There": A Survey of Historical Teachings about Mother in Heaven, where they have gone through statements about Heavenly Mother by LDS leaders during the years.

Paulsen and Pulido address the myth of "sacred silence", but it seems that they do not ask the exact same questions. However, I recall an interview with Pulido, where he used similar language as I did. I just cannot find it anymore. This is the closest I can find:
About the myth that Church members must remain quiet about our Heavenly Mother to protect her sacredness, Pulido asks, “How is the temple or God the Father any less sacred” of a topic, or how can any statement from mortal men and women on these topics change their holiness, glory, or nature?
“I had qualms with that [reasoning], and that is partly why Professor Paulson and I wrote the BYU Studies article about Heavenly Mother, to turn that notion on its head and say that’s not really the case,” Pulido says.

Re: Our Mother in Heaven
I figured that Elohim was called Elohim instead of El is because Elohim, which is the plural of El refers to our heavenly parents and not just Heavenly Father. The thing in Genesis that talks about man and woman becoming one flesh and all that also supports this idea in my mind. Maybe I am completely off base, but since it is Adam and Eve are considered seperate individuals on Earth, but Heavenly Father is Elohim instead of El in not just the temple but also the Hebrew Tenakh and the Book of Abraham when it refers to the "Gods" I understand it in every instance to read as Heavenly Parents. I mean if we are to believe that being sealed together is only the first step of man and wife to become one spiritually, mentally, and physically then would it not stand to reason that since Heavenly Father is not ever mentioned in the Temple or the Scriptures but instead is addressed as Elohim that it is not one celestial being, but two celestial beings that have been sealed with the holy spirit of promise when Our Heavenly Father went through His own mortal existence before becoming celestialized? I know that it is only my opinion and I could be completely off base, but that is how me and my wife see it whenever we have discussed it.
