From what I am understanding it is believed that the Canaanites were these "Nephilim". Science seems to indicate that the Canaanites were just normal human beings. In fact, the evidence is starting to point towards the idea that the Israelites were themselves a subset of Canaanites. So, Canaanites can't be the Nephilim and the Nephilim can't be the Canaanites.
