What does it mean to Spiritually Stretch?

President Nelson:
When you reach up for the Lord’s power in your life with the same intensity that a drowning person has when grasping and gasping for air, power from Jesus Christ will be yours. When the Savior knows you truly want to reach up to Him—when He can feel that the greatest desire of your heart is to draw His power into your life—you will be led by the Holy Ghost to know exactly what you should do.21
When you spiritually stretch beyond anything you have ever done before, then His power will flow into you.22 And then you will understand the deep meaning of words we sing in the hymn “The Spirit of God”
How do we spiritually stretch? Is the difference found in "crying to the Lord" vs "praying to the Lord" or in "searching the scriptures" vs "reading the scriptures?" How do we reach up for the Lord with "intensity?"

I think it means to take bigger leap of faith then you have previously done or that's uncomfortable. We only grow when we stretch ourselves.
If an athlete stretches themselves physically they train harder than they ever have before to perform at a level they haven't performed at previously.
And spiritually speaking this takes a lot of dedication and faith to do. Faith that if you extend yourself from your comfort zone that you will be okay and even better off for it. That you are capable of more than you previously ever thought of.
Reaching to God with the intensity of a drowning person is pretty serious. I think that would take something we haven't usually done. Too many of us say our prayers and that's it. If you were dying I imagine the reach for help would cause you to only focus on that saving device sent to you and you would forget about your surroundings and your distractions and even forget about any pain you may feel during the rescue.
Those are strong words used and I think each of us can imagine a situation of life and death and the intensity of it and then relate it.

It requires a certain level of desperation and a whole lot of surrendering. Surrendering control and will. Desperation for grace, mercy, and/or God's power. An intent that is guileless. A recognition that the
only way you are going to succeed/overcome is if God empowers you and then putting ALL of your trust/faith/belief in to God's power, without reservation or holding back. That also means that once the communication lines are open and you are hearing God's voice, you will follow through and do ALL the things that you feel/hear/understand or are prompted to do. From the smallest thing to the biggest thing.
