Some memories and comments from the June 8th visit of President Russell M. Nelson, Sister Wendy Nelson, and Elder and Sister Rasband to Edmonton.

“Absolutely awe inspiring, makes me want to go home immediately and teach my children what he taught. It was a once in a lifetime experience for my family.” -Nicolette Garside

"Wonderful for the saints of Edmonton to listen to our beloved prophet. The Lord has a plan for us and wants us to be happy with our families forever.”
-Chris Jackson

“Really spiritual, I could feel the spirit as President Nelson came in the room. I also like when he said that family home evening might feel like a burden now but soon it will become a joy - that stood out for me.” -McCallum Strong (member of the youth choir)

"My kids were in the choir, I know that they were having a spiritual experience and that was neat for me. I was impressed by his knowledge of the scriptures. Iʼll be quoting him when I teach my Sunday school class.” I also enjoyed hearing the wives. I see how much President Nelson loves and treats his wife as a partner and that was an example for me."
-Chad Smith

“It became clear to me that the Lord will repeat his message through his servants. What I heard last Sunday was reaffirmed to me today. This suggests that what was shared was important, and that I pay closer attention to this particular message. I am going to do everything I can to put my life in harmony with that message”.
~Cayce Olson, age 17

“I was impressed when they entered, the spirit was overwhelming.” “When I saw President Nelson kneeling to listen to the choir, he knows how important everyone is to our Heavenly Father.”
-Mayte Rosas

“A special night full of warm fuzzies of joy from our leaders who shared inspired guidance to strengthen our homes and families to receive sacred promised blessings”
- Alana Gregson

“The remarks by Sister Nelson helped me understand another perspective and aspect of revelation. Sometimes we need to give our partner space to receive instruction from the Lord. The Lord may require of us to make a sacrifice of convenience, comfort, and balance so our partner has the time and reverence they need to gain important direction and insight from the Lord”.
~A Newlywed Couple

I was fascinated by the insight provided by President Nelson and Sister Nelson on how the prophet receives inspiration from God.

I feel at peace knowing that God inspires our leaders to help us deal with perilous times. I also feel like I understand better how I can receive inspiration for my family and my responsibilities.

President Nelson said that family gatherings are "dress rehearsals for heaven". When I am with my family - especially my grandchildren, I often feel like I'm catching a glimpse of heaven.
-Derek Hudson

"I liked that he asked us to teach our families. I thought it was great how he focussed so heavily on the family unit."
- Marty Wolsey

“I liked the spirit it game me a peaceful feeling.” -Janet Shin - 9 years old.

"I was struck by his obvious love and concern for the youth of the church and ensuring they have they understand that the gathering of Israel is completely relevant to them (and us)and we need to understand and teach it."
-Renee Hardy

"I really enjoyed hearing about their week leading up to the Youth Broadcast. I think learning about the opposition they faced affirmed how important the challenge they gave the youth was.”
-Jade Bateman

"As expecting parents of our first child, I've been thinking a lot about raising our children to be firm and steadfast in the gospel. Both Elder Rasband's talk on staying on the covenant path, and President Nelson's words and prophetic promise about the blessings of learning of and teaching our children about the Gathering of Israel answered many personal prayers. What stood out to me most was when President Nelson said that as we teach our children who they are (covenant children of Israel), they will desire to stay on the path out of love and respect for their Heavenly Father. It was a testament that the Lord hears my prayers and speaks through His Prophet today." -Christopher De'Vries

"My testimony that President Nelson is a prophet was strengthened by this meeting. Hearing Sister Wendy Nelson testify of that truth was especially powerful, and the spirit taught me many lessons about what it means to sustain church leaders as she spoke. Her words also enlightened my understanding of marriage, and I received personal revelation of what I could do to be a better "help meet" for my husband. I am grateful for the opportunies the Lord gives us to hear the words of His servants and receive personal revelation. "
-Rhiannon DeʼVries

“ I really enjoyed Sister Nelson. She really supports President Nelson and that is important. She respects him and loves him.

My favourite story was Joseph and the technicolor coat. I feel great about it because those are my descendants. I know who I am and where i came from, I looked forward to this devotional. I told Heavenly Father I am thrilled to belong to this church. ‘
-Mary, 67

“I loved the personal testimony from Elder Rasband about how our prophet was called of God. It was his own personal experience. It shows that no matter who you are or what your calling is, personal revelation needs to come to all of us.

Last night we watched the broadcast. It prepared is because it spoke of the gathering of Israel. It paved the way for me to receive more knowledge on the gathering of Israel spoken tonight. “
-Elder Greer, 20

“I felt the Spirit and a lot of peace. I personally felt the spirit. I has personal revelation that I can easily apply to my own life. It made me think of the Abrahamic covenant. I received confirmation of President Nelson being a prophet and of the apostles.

My favourite was the whole story of the abrahamic covenant. I had a question in mind. “Why is it important?” I loved that our prophet went through the whole story. Its cool that he spoke so much of the scriptures. “
-Oscar, 24

"Recently my biological father passed away. We had not had a good relationship and when he died we werenʼt even informed that he had passed. I have been filled with anger and trying so hard to get over it, praying reading scriptures faithfully doing my calling easy trying hard. Still nothing, no feelings at all most of the time or just anger. Tonight when the Prophet spoke of the gathering of Israel and families and teaching our children, the Holy Ghost bore POWERFUL witness to me of those truths, but more importantly for me right now the Holy Ghost bore witness that I mattered and I belong to an eternal family that is so much bigger and less flawed than our Earthly one. For the first time in a long time I just felt peace."
-a sister who requested to remain anonymous

"Tonight I was reminded by the prophet that we are all to testify of Jesus Christ."
-Brianna Miller

"I felt impressed to stand in holy places and ensure my home is a holy place."
-Carrie Goddard

"I loved that you could so clearly see the Saviour in his disciples."
-Elena Rivera

“Really enjoyed Sister Nelsonʼs talk and her experiences with Pres Nelson I could relate with my experiences with my husband.”
-Shanelle

“It was amazing spiritually enlightening and insightful.” -Linda Mack

“I enjoyed sister Nelsonʼs talk on how her home had changed with the calling of the prophet. Enjoyed her personal touch.”
-Mike Oviatt

“I thought it was cool that the prophet came to edmonton I havenʼt had a prophet before “ -Greer (youth)
“What a powerful witness that we have a living prophet on the earth. It confirmed to me that I need to keep my covenants no matter what and be an example to my family regardless if they wander.

I was so touched that he invoked a blessing on all our families if there were sick among them that they would be healed.

He is the Prophet. I know it and canʼt deny it.”
-Leasa Sulz

I loved being reminded Heavenly Father has given us a tremendous opportunity to have a body. He wants us to have immortality and eternal life. The other side of the veil will be a glorious experience. Heavenly Father doesnʼt coerce any of his children, he wants us to choose to follow Him and receive essential ordinances because He loves us.
- Beth

I appreciated the casual atmosphere. I felt that Pres. Nelson treated us as equals. I loved how Sis Nelson shared her testimony that Pres. Nelson is a prophet and shared insights into him receiving revelation. -Gwynne

I appreciated the following points:
It was interesting to hear him talk about the family connections in the Old Testament.
His reference to the covenant pathway and the challenges that try to deter us from it.
His reference to ministering to those on this earth and those behind the veil.
- Dan

“As I listened to Elder Rasband and President Nelson, I heard comforting words about the everlasting importance of families in the Church. The message, compounded by the Holy Spirit, really made me consider what I can do to help my own family contribute to the gathering of Israel.”
-Thomas Pasterfield

“My belief that Russell M. Nelson is the prophet of the Lord on the earth today was solidified and affirmed with surety during the devotional tonight. It was awesome!”
-Marty Pasterfield

What really stood out to me was how he said that the family is the focus of the adversary now, and that our children WILL be persecuted, so it is our responsibility to make sure they are prepared

When Elvis entered the building it was "electric" to those who were in attendance, even spiritual. We need to be careful that we don't confuse enthusiasm, excitement, and the "electric" feeling of being around a celebrity or someone we esteem as great, with the Holy Spirit. Sentimentalism is not the Holy Spirit.

Duly noted.

Likewise we need to be careful that we don't confuse the whisperings, impressions, and witness of the Holy Ghost as merely being feelings of "sentimentalism." Thus the utmost importance of everyone learning for themselves how to receive and discern the gift of the Holy Ghost.

You'd be surprised.

"And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not." - 3 Nephi 9:20

"And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. ...And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" - Luke 24:15-16,31-32

"And it came to pass that there came a voice as if it were above the cloud of darkness, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants whom I have sent unto you to declare good tidings. And it came to pass when they heard this voice, and beheld that it was not a voice of thunder, neither was it a voice of a great tumultuous noise, but behold, it was a still voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul— And notwithstanding the mildness of the voice, behold the earth shook exceedingly, and the walls of the prison trembled again, as if it were about to tumble to the earth; and behold the cloud of darkness, which had overshadowed them, did not disperse— And behold the voice came again, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand; and seek no more to destroy my servants. And it came to pass that the earth shook again, and the walls trembled. And also again the third time the voice came, and did speak unto them marvelous words which cannot be uttered by man; and the walls did tremble again, and the earth shook as if it were about to divide asunder. And it came to pass that the Lamanites could not flee because of the cloud of darkness which did overshadow them; yea, and also they were immovable because of the fear which did come upon them. Now there was one among them who was a Nephite by birth, who had once belonged to the church of God but had dissented from them. And it came to pass that he turned him about, and behold, he saw through the cloud of darkness the faces of Nephi and Lehi; and behold, they did shine exceedingly, even as the faces of angels. And he beheld that they did lift their eyes to heaven; and they were in the attitude as if talking or lifting their voices to some being whom they beheld. And it came to pass that this man did cry unto the multitude, that they might turn and look. And behold, there was power given unto them that they did turn and look; and they did behold the faces of Nephi and Lehi. And they said unto the man: Behold, what do all these things mean, and who is it with whom these men do converse?" Helaman 5:29-38

"O all ye that are spared because ye were more righteous than they, will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you? ... And now it came to pass that there were a great multitude gathered together, of the people of Nephi, round about the temple which was in the land Bountiful; and they were marveling and wondering one with another, and were showing one to another the great and marvelous change which had taken place. And they were also conversing about this Jesus Christ, of whom the sign had been given concerning his death. And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn. And it came to pass that again they heard the voice, and they understood it not. And again the third time they did hear the voice, and did open their ears to hear it; and their eyes were towards the sound thereof; and they did look steadfastly towards heaven, from whence the sound came. And behold, the third time they did understand the voice which they heard; and it said unto them: Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him. And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them.(3 Nephi 9:13; 11:1-8)

They didn't know they had been baptized by fire, true. But that doesn't speak to your point that they were confusing the spirit with sentimentalism. It just means they hadn't recognized what they had experienced with being baptized by fire and the Holy Ghost. In any case, my statement left room for some confusion on the other end, just because I can't speak in an absolute sense.

While sentimentalism is indeed not automatically to be equated with the Holy Spirit, feelings are sometimes a sign of it to certain people, but not to everyone. Therefore, we also need to not reject when the Spirit does cause feelings. This is a matter of discernment, not for automatic dismissal of feelings. In other words feelings CAN accompany the Spirit, but are not automatically equated with it.

It's interesting, as there is a difference between someone who has the spirit and someone who does not when you meet them. I have had experiences not even knowing a person at times I have felt the light of Christ radiate off some people. As for a prophet or an apostle walking into a room and someone feeling something different - I would say that 9/10 times it's the holy ghost testifying they are a prophet. It's not often members get to be in the presence of a prophet and although we don't worship them it's a great opportunity that the Holy Ghost takes advantage of to testify of a living prophet. I would even say it's more important than ever in the days we live in.

And yet, at the end of the day, the Spirit is not just feelings. It isn't sentimentalism. We need to be careful when we are in large crowds of people anxiously anticipating the arrival of our favorite celebrity to not confuse those feelings of excitement and enthusiasm with the Holy Spirit. There are diverse types of spirits that can have all sorts of affects on us that make us feel good, excited, "electric", and alive and they are not the Holy Spirit. Certain situations and certain circumstances can make us susceptible to these spirits more readily. Also, our biases and our prejudices (whether positive or negative) can also make us susceptible to being confused about what we are experiencing. We need to be careful not to confuse the Holy Spirit with sentimentalism.

Umm, are you saying that the prophet is merely some people's "favorite celebrity?" I would be careful with that one. And I reject an attempt to belittle people's spiritual impressions when the spirit comes upon them to bear testimony of him.

I think I've been pretty clear on what I've said.
President Howard W. Hunter offered this counsel: “Let me offer a word of caution. … I think if we are not careful … , we may begin to try to counterfeit the true influence of the Spirit of the Lord by unworthy and manipulative means. I get concerned when it appears that strong emotion or free-flowing tears are equated with the presence of the Spirit. Certainly the Spirit of the Lord can bring strong emotional feelings, including tears, but that outward manifestation ought not to be confused with the presence of the Spirit itself” (The Teachings of Howard W. Hunter, 184).

Here is from a missionary Blog about his experience hearing President Nelson in Canada:

"Then we had the prophet visit on Saturday so we got to help set up the chairs for the event. Our stake center was packed with over 1400 chairs. It was such an amazing experience! The doors opened to seat people at 4:30 and he spoke at 6:00 but people were lined up before 3:00. Now we would have loved to be front row but that was simply not possible. We had work we needed to get done that day, we got there early and the place was already pretty full so we were back in the gym. But had pretty decent seats. I wasn't able to shake his hand, to be honest hardly anyone could. They were on a time crunch and they showed up, spoke and left very quickly, so no time for any greeting or anything. It was such an incredible session though. We heard first from sister Rasband, who talked about following the Prophet. It was cool to hear that from someone so close to him. She also talked about obedience. Then Elder Rasband spoke about similar, following the Prophet and how he is a special witness of Christ. It was a really awesome talk, so powerful as he testified of Christ. Then Sister Nelson spoke, she had such an interesting talk. She talked about the broadcast last week and what she said is how much opposition they felt that week before they were going to speak because Satan did not want them to share what they had planned. She compared it to Joseph Smith before he had the first vision. It was fascinating as they talked about how there were so many temptations. Then she talked about how often and how much revelation the Prophet receives since he got his calling. She said she has felt the hastening of the work simply through how often she is prompted to leave their room in the night. It was such a great talk. Then President Nelson spoke, he shared about the Book of Mormon. Very similar to his talk at conference except he seemed much more relaxed and was so funny to listen to. It was a great talk. He shared some of his experiences with sharing the Book of Mormon and then he talked about what the Book of Mormon confirms, refutes, and basically just testified that it will fix your problems if you read and apply its message. It was awesome, we had 2 of our investigators there and they loved it! They truly felt that he was the Prophet. And one felt the need to read the Book of Mormon. It was awesome. But I just wanted to say I absolutely know President Nelson is a prophet, we were encouraged to go with a question and I definitely received an answer to my question. I know that he is the prophet of God."
