"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the following statement about the transfer of all of its missionaries out of Nicaragua:
In light of continued violence and deteriorating conditions in Nicaragua, the Church has decided to transfer the remaining 158 missionaries out of that country. Those missionaries are being moved to temporary assignments in North America, South America, the Caribbean and New Zealand. Most of these missionaries have already left the country. All others awaiting travel are in a safe location and will arrive in their new assignments in the next several days.
As part of this move, the Nicaragua Managua South Mission president and his young family have left the country and returned home. The Nicaragua Managua North Mission president and his companion will remain in Nicaragua for the time being to take care of some ecclesiastical responsibilities over local Church members.
The Church will continue to monitor developments in Nicaragua and make a decision in the future regarding the eventual return of missionaries. In the meantime, we pray for peace and stability for all who live there during this uncertain time."

World leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Russell M. Nelson’s days as a pioneering heart surgeon may be more than three decades in the past, but an announcement Friday evening shows his work continues to have enduring effects.
At a dinner on Temple Square, the University of Utah announced it has established the Dr. Russell M. Nelson and Dantzel W. Nelson Presidential Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery. President Nelson is a University of Utah alumnus and was a practicing heart surgeon until he was called to full-time Church service in 1984. Dantzel, his first wife, who passed away in 2005 and is the mother of the couple’s 10 children, was influential in President Nelson’s pursuit of open-heart surgery. President Nelson has said she gave him invaluable support and encouragement during his career and helped him develop a heart and lung machine small enough to function in an operating room.
President Nelson said Friday evening was nostalgic for him. He described how he and Dantzel created the heart and lung machine, told what it was like to perform Utah’s first open-heart surgery in 1955 and spoke fondly of his experience leading the university’s thoracic surgery training program for 17 years.

Seek and Speak Out for Peace, Elder Uchtdorf Urges During Volkstrauertag Service
19 NOVEMBER 2018

"For Elder Uchtdorf, who is from Germany and served in the German Air Force, the day is personal.
“It is indeed a day of remembrance and a day of mourning for all who died in wars, but it is much more,” said Elder Uchtdorf. “The commemoration and service include the victims of violent oppression because of race, religion, or conviction.”
In Elder Uchtdorf’s family as he grew up, Volkstrauertag was “never only a day to mourn the dead,” he said.
“Volkstrauertag was a solemn reminder of the causes that lead to the tragedy of war and the need to do everything in our own individual power to preserve and regain peace, or at least to clearly speak out for peace.”
The day is an opportunity to look back at what has happened in history and a reminder that there are ways to protect peace.
“Individually and as a people we can and should be a people of peace and reconciliation,” Elder Uchtdorf said. “I consider this as one of our prime responsibilities toward our children and their children. … It takes empathy and action to influence the future of mankind based on dignity, honesty, and eternal values.”

U.S. sanctions Nicaragua vice president for corruption, abuses
Nov. 28 (UPI) -- “The U.S. administration imposed sanctions Wednesday on Nicaragua's vice president and first lady Rosario Murillo De Ortega for corruption and human rights abuses.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order permitting sanctions against individuals, entities and their associates engaged in corruption, human rights abuses and undermining democracy in Nicaragua -- to pressure the regime of Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega to restore democracy and rule of law.

Murillo and Nestor Moncada Lau, a national security adviser to Ortega, were both sanctioned as a result of the Nicaraguan leader's "violent response" to protests over changes made to the social security system...

...The Treasury said the NNP employed "death squads" to carry out extrajudicial killings, kidnappings and torture, while the youth organization attacked opponents of the Nicaraguan government.

Moncada is accused of acting as an intelligence agent for the Ortega regime and engaging in bribery and blackmail to sway people to support the government. The Treasury said he also "worked with President Ortega to cover up Ortega's sexual conduct with a minor."

First Presidency Easter Message – April 2019

“He is risen!” (Matthew 28:6) This is the glorious message of Easter and great reminder of the victory of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
The Savior was resurrected, as we all will be. He suffered so that He could succor us in all of our trials. He paid the ransom for us as Heavenly Father’s children so that we could be delivered from death and sin.
The “lively hope” (1 Peter 1:3) we are given by the resurrection is our conviction that death is not the conclusion but a necessary step from mortality to immortality. We should all praise God for the assured resurrection that makes our mortal separations temporary and gives us the hope and strength to carry on.
We thank God for his Son, for his mission in mortality, and for his ministry as the resurrected Lord. We testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. He is our Creator, Savior and Redeemer, Advocate with the Father, and Deliverer. One day He will return to rule and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords."
