Psittacosis is a disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci which is carried by birds. Humans most commonly catch the disease from infected birds by inhaling the bacteria from secretions and droppings. Take care around wild birds, but also when gardening or mowing the lawn, as birds may have left droppings. Protective equipment including a dust mask and gloves should be worn. Early symptoms of the infection include fever, headaches, muscle aches and dry cough, and may progress to severe difficulty breathing. In severe cases, pneumonia develops. Rare complications may include encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), or myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle). The time between a human being exposed to the bacteria and the development of symptoms can vary from five days to four weeks, however it is commonly 10 days.

If we're talking about health considerations, it's nice to to hear about all these different uses of the food we eat, different ways to prepare them to better preserve their innate food value or even which foods have great health benefits. But since most of us buy our food from the store, we might want to consider what goes into the food we're expected to eat. A few months ago in a different forum, I saw two ingredient labels for the same prepared product; one was produced stateside and the other in Britain. However, the difference was astounding: most of the U.S.-made product was chemicals, those unpronounceable, artificial substances added to enhance taste/flavor, texture, color, aroma, shelf life ... now I can't vouch for labeling requirements in Britain, but it drove home the point that the food we buy, even basic foodstuffs, are loaded with chemicals.

Basic things like ketchup ... flavored corn syrup, anyone? Strawberry-flavored high-fructose corn syrup on toast (no strawberries were harmed in the production of this product)?

Years ago, in my college organic chemistry class, we had a lab where we studied and worked with esters. From https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves ... _of_Esters,

Esters are produced when carboxylic acids are heated with alcohols in the presence of an acid catalyst. The catalyst is usually concentrated sulphuric acid. Dry hydrogen chloride gas is used in some cases, but these tend to involve aromatic esters (ones where the carboxylic acid contains a benzene ring) (emphasis added).

Benzene ring ... that means they are "coal tar derivatives", and they are known to be/can be cancer causing. But these esters with benzene rings are the ones used to enhance the odors/aromas in the food we eat.

Artificial colors, such as FD&C, are also coal tar derivatives. That birthday cake you got with blue frosting? My skin crawls to think of how much FD&C Blue went into it. That pickle relish you put on your hot dog (that is more artificial preservative than real)? FD&C yellow. Vanilla or Vanillin? Vanillin is the artificial vanilla. Mustard? That's safe; I've looked and I've yet to see any kind of mustard with much more than mustard seed, vinegar, salt, turmeric and other assorted spices. Of course, there are open-ended questions like caramel color, which all depends on the source and the production method, and our labeling does not include any hints.

Then there are the nitrates and sulfites which are added to maintain freshness in products like bacon--anybody here like bacon?--as well as other artificial preservatives, such as EDTA and polysorbate 80; collectively, they interfere with hormonal functions. And since hormones function on such a miniscule scale, the argument that "it's only a small amount" should carry no weight. If it interferes with hormones, it affects bodily functions. Some of them interfere particularly with estrogen receptors, meaning that, with enough artificial preservatives that bind with estrogen receptors in the body, the body responds as though it were estrogen. You like men with boobs? Other preservatives are suspected to interfere with brain function similarly; by interfering with the receptors, they suppress or excite them and produce different results. Got a kid with any of the various autism spectrum disorders (which were possibly caused by something in a vaccination), ADD/ADHD? Probably should be careful.

One thing that might fall out of your budget: eating out. You have ZERO control over what restaurants use for ingredients.

This doesn't even broach the topic of GMOs and the Roundup-generating gene in the food we eat, for which we have Monsanto to thank; this is not your grandfather's corn, or wheat or whatever other genetically modified food they've interfered with, and how our body is processing it is slowly coming to light.

Several years ago, President Kimball told us that we should learn to plant a garden; he added that we might not need it at that time, but that we would need the practice; whether that suggested something ominous like a food shortage (as is currently predicted) because of some panic or a compromised food supply, he did not say. But a garden is a guaranteed way of getting fresh food without the extra additives; Witness Governor Whitmer's recent executive order in Michigan during the COVID panic that buying seed or planting a garden was a non-essential, prohibited activity. However, with careful looking, it IS possible to find a lot of the things you eat without all the deleterious additives; if you have somebody in your family with severe allergies--peanuts, milk, eggs, etc.--you're already familiar with the routine of reading labels. And with modern storage techniques, all those extra chemicals aren't needed.

However, with some effort, you can even find bacon without nitrates, so there is hope!

A suspected case of bubonic plague, the disease which killed millions during the Black Death pandemic, has been reported in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia.
The case was discovered in the city of Bayannur, northwest of Beijing, according to state-run Xinhua news agency and triggered a plague prevention alert that will remain for the rest of the year. It is transmitted to people by bites from infected fleas, touching infected animals such as rats and breathing infected airborne droplets.
The infection could also enter the body through a cut in the skin if the person came in contact with an infected animal's blood.

In 2015, a microbiologist and an Anglo Saxon scholar decided to test a recipe from a 10th-century Old English medical compendium called Bald's Leechbook; what they found surprised everyone. The potion, called "Bald's eyesalve," was tested on soft tissue infected with the antibiotic-resistant methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus – otherwise known as the hospital superbug MRSA. It killed 90 percent of the bacteria, the same efficacy as vancomycin, the antibiotic that is used for MRSA.

"Nasal swabbing to test for COVID-19 may have caused a patient to begin leaking cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), researchers reported.

The woman in her 40s underwent testing prior to an elective hernia repair, and shortly thereafter developed a variety of symptoms, including unilateral rhinorrhea, headache, and vomiting, but her nasal drainage tested positive for β2-transferrin, reported Jarrett Walsh, MD, PhD, of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, and colleagues.

"To our knowledge, this is the first report of an iatrogenic CSF leak after a nasal swab for COVID-19," they wrote in a letter in JAMA Otolaryngology -- Head & Neck Surgery.

Key to the patient's case was that she had a history of removal of nasal polyps for 20 years, and when the authors performed a CT scan and MRI, they found a 1.8-cm encephalocele, or a sac-like formation consisting of CSF, brain tissue, and membranes, which dated back to 2017. However, the patient's 2017 CT diagnosis was para-nasal sinus disease, not an encephalocele.

The patient also had idiopathic intracranial hypertension, a disorder related to high pressure in the brain where CSF can build up, mimicking signs of a brain tumor. She also had an "undiagnosed skull base defect," but the swab did not break through there. Instead, it "caused trauma to the patient's preexisting encephalocele," Walsh and colleagues explained."
