Pride

Post by zionminded »

The more I think about ETB's talks on Pride, the more i think he may have been talking about pride in the church, not pride in ones self. Of course we each have individual pride, but I thin he may have been talking about institutional pride.

Most of us think of pride as self-centeredness, conceit, boastfulness, arrogance, or haughtiness. All of these are elements of the sin, but the heart, or core, is still missing.

The central feature of pride is enmity—enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellowmen. Enmity means “hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition.” It is the power by which Satan wishes to reign over us.
Could the church's enmity toward sin, have created a separation people?
Another major portion of this very prevalent sin of pride is enmity toward our fellowmen. We are tempted daily to elevate ourselves above others and diminish them.
I think this is true. Reflecting on this, we have to ask ourselves, our our church policies and standards prideful? Do we "harden our boundaries", in a prideful way?
Pride is the great stumbling block to Zion. I repeat: Pride is the great stumbling block to Zion.

A good way to unstand Pride is to understand its opposite

the opposite of FAITH is DOUBT
the opposite of HOPE is FEAR
the opposite of CHARITY is PRIDE

Charity is love of God and willingness to submit to His will (not as I will)
Pride is following our own will. (do as you will)

What?

These are the kind of things that make me wonder where others are?
It seems like people are looking for things when there's nothing there.
What Church/Gospel policies or standards seem prideful? (is this a straw-man type argument that is so common today?)

I know many Mormon's that think they are better than others because they have "all" the truth. I think that's pride too.

Very true, there are those individuals that are prideful. My question is what policy/standard is in the Church that tells us to look down on others?

The pride of covenant people is the hardness of their heart to come unto Christ.
D&C 101:8 In the day of their peace they esteemed lightly my counsel; but, in the day of their trouble, of necessity they feel after me.
When you're sick of being divided against yourself, when you're tired of everything you set your own hand to turning to dust, when you tire of being what you are, then you can change. That's why God sends famines, fires, floods, and killer bees. He's lowering the opportunity cost of repentance until the only thing left to sacrifice is your heart. When you have nothing left to lose--all those things upon which your heart was set upon--all that is left is is your heart. And that is all the Lord has ever required of you.

Most of ETB's sermon on pride was lifted (some would say plagiarised) straight from Mere Christianity by C S Lewis.
That doesn't diminish the importance of the message or instruction, but it could suggest we shouldn't read quite as much into it as we are tempted to.

You don't think C.S. Lewis could be inspired from above?

Undoubtedly.
He was a great man.
My point is the inspiration was his, not President Benson's.
Now, it could be that Benson was inspired to use Lewis' words, but he probably shouldn't have passed them off as his own
