Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
Hey all - heard there's a two hour "presentation" going to happen in our ward next week on a flash drive. Does anyone know what this is going to be about and if anyone else's ward going to have this?
Interesting stuff!

Is it during sacrament meeting time, or the 2 hour block after?

Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
It will be for the two hours after sacrament. My wife said she heard it (the presentation) was on a flash drive so it can't be seen online. Was announced during sacrament meeting - apparently ward council already watched it.
I'm beginning to think this is just our ward if no one else is having a similar presentation.

Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
Not a special sacrament meeting that I know of but next week is the 5th Sunday so normally that means combined Priesthood and RS, but since I'm a teacher in primary I usually miss out on those. However we were told today that all the teachers were to teach our classes next week but instead of attending sharing time with our kids we would get to go to the combined class instead. The primary presidency would stay behind and just have a big story time with the primary kids. I have no idea what the YW/YM are doing and if this is just for next week or every 5th Sunday from now on. This has never happened before so I assumed there was a special class, I guess I'll find out next week.

Now that Provo is getting a second temple it is a plan for South Jordan to retain it's most righteous city status since it was the first city to have 2 temples.itsmerich wrote:Hey all - heard there's a two hour "presentation" going to happen in our ward next week on a flash drive. Next sunday is our fast sundauy because the first Sunday of December has been announced as a special "Stake Conference". I'm in Riverton. I kid you not that we just had Stake Conference in mid October.itsmerich wrote:Hey all - heard there's a two hour "presentation" going to happen in our ward next week on a flash drive. Oh. Keep in mind that the Jordan River temple is closing in mid February for 2 years. It may be about our new temple district too. But the special stake conference was announced this week rather abruptly.

Touche rew. Being in the HPGL, I learned what it's about today and it's no reason to get overly-excited - it's simply a 2 hour presentation on the importance of keeping the sabbath day holy and focusing on the true meaning of the sacrament and keeping the meeting reverent.rewcox wrote:Is Col Flagg presenting?

Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
I don't know if this is related, but here in the Europe there was a two hour satellite broadcast for all ward and stake councils. Elder Ballard, the area president and some other people (including a German stake RS president) spoke. I guess similar meetings have been hold in other areas too. I don't know why a whole ward would watch this, though. Many of the messages were about how councils should work and such.
Are you referring to this? I don't understand why they would show this to whole ward either. The structure of this is to have pauses for the ward council to discuss what they can do and such. It is really most for the leaders, not for regular membersCol. That makes sense, our stake conference was 2 weeks ago and they focused on the Sabbath day and how to be more reverent in sacrament meeting and such.
Yesterday, while we were gathering in the chapel for sacrament meeting the organist played only one prelude song and then was quiet while our bishopric reminded us a couple times to be reverent and keep the talking down while we got to our seats. It was a little odd without prelude music and honestly our service is still noisy with all the little kids talking and wailing, I almost expected them to get up and hush everyone between talks...
Casserole on 5th sundays? I'm not a casserole fan but I get so hungry during church I'll eat anything so I'm a little jealous! Genius way to get people to class too!

Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
Keeping the Sabbath Day holy is one of the hot topics. There is a power point that is to be shown, from the Stake Presidency who received it from SLC. Don't remember it being 2 hours long. Ours is going to be given as a 5th Sunday.
Other thing is a new policy being tried out in the Phoenix SE valley area. Wards to be reduced to 400ish, depending on active priesthood holders. Stakes limited to 8 wards. 4 wards in each building. 5 wards in a growth situation with a 2.5 hour block. The stakes here have to put a plan in place by Dec 1. The Brethren expect to make 4 to 5 new stakes which will fill all the buildings in that area with 4 wards per building with 4 or 5 buildings being joint stake buildings until some remodel work gets done to house them.
Once this is done, it will cascade up into the Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert area and the far NW area Peoria, Vistancia, Glendale, etc. Phoenix, will be the last area done. At some point this will move to the SLC valley starting in the growth areas. No new buildings will be designed in North American until 2017, unless all the existing buildings have 4 wards, etc. or something really significant causes change (plague, earthquake, government collapse, etc.)

Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
When we were in Wyoming the branch we were in would do the same thing. The members would bring various sides like veggies, casseroles, funeral potatoes, baked beans, desserts, things like that. The Branch Presidency would bring meat, and they didn't skimp: A couple of whole hams, 4 turkeys, ginormous plates of BBQ chicken, and one time there were two prime rib roasts. It was one of the only good things about being in Wyoming.vertigo wrote:Casserole on 5th sundays? I'm not a casserole fan but I get so hungry during church I'll eat anything so I'm a little jealous! Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
My ward boundaries were recently rearranged (I am in TX, so this doesn't happen often) and the first Sunday that we met together, the Bishopric announced that the third hour, 11:00 to noon, would be a get-to-know-each-other session, instead of Pri, YW, RS and PH. We met in the cultural hall and chatted. There was no food involved, which was a huge oversight. It was easy to tell that most people just wanted to get home for lunch, especially the kids. It would have been very easy to send out an email announcing a pot luck lunch, or have the leadership purchase some simple snacks and orange juice. There really is something about "breaking bread" together to start forging friendships.

Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
I sure hope wards and stakes go smaller.
I've been against huge ones, including high and fast baptismal rates with low retention.
I was hoping that when social research came out (OTTOMH, I believe "90 people" is the general limit of one's social circle), the church would reconsider unit sizes.
Having lived in branches and lower-number wards with high numbers of names on the rolls, it's generally so much better. The burden on leaders is incredible, and effectiveness of about everything falls. And low-number units can do potlucks more than once a month! (Though most higher leaders don't like it.)

I'm not a fan of the pot lucks. Some food, is, well, interesting. I can just see it now, Stahura going around, "Have you been Born Again?" I'm sure Obrien would have some fun with him.Lizzy60 wrote:My ward boundaries were recently rearranged (I am in TX, so this doesn't happen often) and the first Sunday that we met together, the Bishopric announced that the third hour, 11:00 to noon, would be a get-to-know-each-other session, instead of Pri, YW, RS and PH. Re: Special Sacrament Meeting Next Week
I never understood linger longers. 3 hrs of church was long enough, why would anyone want to linger longer? And pot lucks?? Count me out. The worst food poisoning I've ever had was from a ward pot luck. That was back in 1994. It was bad. Lesson learned.
