What is the Earthly organization of the LDS church

Post by Dash jones »

I am trying to figure out how the LDS church is organized in regards to the affairs of men.

From what I gather, you have the Prophet who is the head of the Church. He is also known as the President of the Church (as in president of the Corporation). He is assisted by two counselors who are called by him.

Next you have the Quorum of Twelve apostles (14 when the prophet dies, which is a little odd to me, but hey, it is what it is). They are led by the President of the Twelve? who is the most senior of the apostles following suite of Brigham Young. If the most senior is in the First presidency (mentioned above) you will have an acting President.

Each of the twelve seems to have some area where they are the director of. What are these areas which they are the directors of?

Next you have the First bishopric. These are in charge of the welfare system of the church. What else are the in charge of and do each of them have a specific area they are over.

Next you have the First Quorum of the Seventy. These typically become Area presidents? I think they are also in other arenas that they are in charge of, what are these categories. Who are their employees/underlings? How does this work?

You then have the Second Quorum of the Seventy, who are supposed to assist the first quorum?

And then if you have any gaps you have Area presidents and counselors?

Next, you have the Temple Presidents and Mission Presidents (or is there another step in between?). Who's jurisdiction do they fall under? Is it the area presidency, or is it specifically the Seventies?

Under these you have Stake Presidents, and under those you have Bishops.

Is this the basic structure? Can you fill in the gaps because I feel like I'm missing a whole lot of the bureaucracy and administration of the church. I know it employs a LOT of people, but I don't know how they fit into all of this. For example who is over the tech side of things in the LDS church. Who heads it? Who is over the budgets, who heads it? Who is over the CES and who are the non-GA's in charge of it?

There's a Whole lot there (several pages of stuff if you know it and are willing to write it) that I am in the dark about.

Anyone up to enlightening me on it?

Not quite right.
Neither Mission presidents nor Temple presidents have any authority over stake presidents.

Dash - Let me take a swing at it, although I am admittedly not an expert.

Starting from the bottom :

A bishop oversees a local congregation, called a ward. Usually a ward has 200 - 350 members. It's roughly analogous to a priest overseeing a parish. A bishop usually serves for 5 years +/-.

A stake president oversees a stake, which is a geographical collection of wards, maybe 5 - 10 wards. Both bishops and stake presidents have 2 councillors and and executive Secretary. Everyone from from stake president down is a volunteer. Men preside in all leadership callings except in the relief society (the woman's group) and primary (the children's group). A stake is roughly equivalent to a diocese. Stake presidents usually serve for 7 -10 years, in my observation.

The world is divided into areas, with area presidents (with 2 councillors). Google can likely tell you how many areas there are. These guys are from the quorum of 70s you referenced in your op. They are paid a stipend for their services. They are usually upper middle to upper class professionals in the business, legal, academic our military worlds. An area is roughly analogous to an archdiocese.

Mormons build temples all over, and the world is divided into temple temple districts, too. I don't know if they exactly match the "area" boundaries or not. Each temple had a presidency (unpaid, as far as I know) with 3 men.

The world is also divided up into missions. Each mission has a mission president with 2 councillors. They are reimbursed for expenses they incur to leave home and run the mission office, usually for 3 years. The mission presidents and temple presidents are called and released with regularity - these callings are generally prerequisites for calling to be a General Authority.

This is getting long, and it's dinner time. I'll continue later tonight from my computer (this phone posting is tedious). Also, as a disclaimer, I am a nobody at church - I've never had a "high calling", and likely never will. I have been pretty active for 40 years, and am a lifelong member.

Ps , my wife is Catholic, so i kind of understand your organization, too.

Really appreciate serious discussions of one another, and of common interests. Dash Jones, thank you for coming to this forum and posting as you do, kind towards others, and seeking knowledge, and sharing what you can. Can hardly wait till we can all join together for the same purpose of serving one another in peace and goodwill for all, Christians, Jews, Muslims, and all other invited guests of the Lamb of God, shown we are all one family, all decendants of Noah and Enoch and of Adam and Eve.♡
