We still live in the least violent time in history. The likelihood of this happening to you is close to zero.

They murder rate in medieval Europe was 30x's higher.

That being said, vary sad.

I disagree with saying that we live in the least violent time in history, because I feel like that ignores the huge spikes in violence that we have had during our era. The world wars killed millions of people. Over 20 million died in Russia alone. Sure, you can examine things like murder rates, etc, and on a day to day basis when we aren't getting blown to pieces, things are pretty orderly (unless you live in the projects) but over all, the violence we have faced is pretty massive.

Also as I pointed out, the type of violence you are likely to experience will depend on what side of the tracks you live on as well.

That's not so say the world isn't violent, but less so historically.

I mean, I understand the 13th century still had raiding, small wars, big wars, raping and pillaging, and I find it easily believable that the murder rate, overall, would be higher. But millions upon millions of people died in the wars of the 20th century, as well as were pillaged, raped, tortured, slaughtered wholesale in the most genocidal fashion etc, etc, etc. And that's just Europe. The population explosion of the 20th century would also in part contribute to a rise in crime, particularly in third world countries. Gangs, mafia, sex/slave trade, warlords, drug lords, etc, etc.

These are words of hate. Angry black activists and my fellow Native Americans would be near the top of that list. Jews historically have been one of the most persecuted groups. They have done a very good job of channeling that anger into desire to achieve. Jews, even poor and/or rebuilding ones devour education like few others do. They turn their education into success. It's not a coincidence that the Nobels that actually mean something (medicine and science) have a significantly higher percentage of Jews than the general population does.

They have also done a marvelous job or remembering who they are.
