In conservative and predominantly-Mormon Utah, a state not known for its diversity and election of women to political office, Jackie Biskupski stands out.

On Tuesday, the 49-year-old single mom became the first openly-gay person to be elected as mayor of Salt Lake City – a sign, she says, that the city has evolved in embracing those who don't fit the state's straight-laced mold.

By a five percent margin (52 percent to 48 percent), Biskupski beat two-term mayor Ralph Becker and will take office in January, providing that her 1,450-vote lead holds after a Nov. 17 recount. Becker says he will not concede until after the official canvas, which Utah law requires take place two weeks after the election.

On Wednesday, a tired but happy Biskpuski told PEOPLE she's confident that the outcome won't change.
Thoughts?

Could be a sign of Heber C Kimballs prophecy.

"After a while the gentiles will gather in Salt Lake City by the thousands, and this will be among the wicked cities of the world.”

That's my thought. Become as wicked and evil as San Francisco.

Yes, quite true. Salt Lake is not your grandpa's city anymore.

Didn't know, don't care. You couldn't pay me enough to live in slc.

I think it is an interesting harbinger about the liberalized attitudes of many lds toward the homo sex community. :(

Will she be a good mayor? That's what I'm most concerned about.

Remember, there is this: Ether 10:11 And he did do justice unto the people, but not unto himself because of his many whoredoms; wherefore he was cut off from the presence of the Lord.

Maybe it was the lesser of two evils. The other being pro abortion. I don't know about the candidates.

Obrien brings an interesting comment about a harbinger of the lds communities leaning towards acceptance of homosexuality.

Some of my wife's "friends" on Facebook openly support it while at the same time putting down the church leaders
. Kinda shocking when you know who these people are.

Well, without getting into a whole can of worms, it would be nice to think that the electorate has voted in the best candidate for the job, irrespective of sex, sexuality, or gender, or indeed, how well tended is their front lawn. But the thing about democracy is, the people get what the people deserve.

Best wishes, 2RM.

Liberal doesn't equal sinful. Its not a two way scale.

Doesn't that depend? I know there are a lot of people who think it is okay to go all multiple personality disorder when separating Church morality with business or political occupations. Not sure that is really possible. Could a doctor who performs elective abortions be a good Mormon? Could a gal who does porn but nothing that involves intercourse still get a calling if she is LDS? I don't think so. How can a politician support evil policies and still be considered a righteous person?

As for a lesbian or gay candidate, if they opposed abortion and supported gun rights I would vote for him or her against an opponent who was heterosexual but supported those stands.

You could me. Pay me $10M a year to be a SpEd teacher there, I'd work one year and retire for good, probably to a small mountain town in Colorado.

As for SLC, when I'm looking at who to vote for, I'll consider their personal lives only as far as it shows what their qualifications for the election are. I won't automatically dismiss someone because of their sexuality, but I will give it appropriate consideration when deciding their positions on issues. Most of all I'd want to know they have the integrity to do the right thing.

If it "depends", then at best it is a factor of it, but not a sole determinant. Liberal <> sinfulness, anymore than Conservative = righteousness. There are other factors.

For example, a liberal may choose to provide for a welfare system to take care of the poor. Sounds Christ-like to me. A factor might be who is providing it, the federal government or a local government; or a factor of how much, or what assistance is being provided or how it is funded.

A conservative may choose to put into prison those with drug addictions, which is likely a very non-Christ-like attitude. However a factor might be what is the nature of the addiction or their recoverability through other means? Or the resources and risk factors of that individual or the quality or problems of their incarceration.

So, when I hear that SLC is liberal, that doesn't make it evil. HOWEVER: I DO think that SLC is evil, but I don't think it comes on the back of political lines, I think it comes on the back of all changes in society. For example, South Jordan is more evil than it was 30 years ago, and so its Brigham City.

So you're making my point - you'd leave as soon as you could!
