Trump says he could send as many as 75,000 federal agents to US cities

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he's willing to send as many as 75,000 federal agents into American cities to quell violent crime, a recent campaign theme for the President.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Fox News, Trump began by saying he was ready to dispatch "50,000, 60,000 people" into American cities.

But eventually he upped the figure to 75,000 -- but said it would require local authorities asking for help.

"We have to be invited in. At some point we'll have to do something much stronger than being invited in," Trump said.

"We'll go into all of the cities, any of the cities. We're ready," he added.

Deploying 75,000 officers would mark a significant portion of all federal officers in the country. According to a 2019 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were approximately 100,000 federal law enforcement officers in the entire United States in 2016, the last year for which data was available.

Trump's comments come as he has tried to make federal policing a campaign issue, portraying cities as violent and out of control in an appeal to suburban residents. The President said Wednesday that he will "surge" federal law enforcement officers to Chicago and other American cities, despite resistance from local leaders, as he adopts a hardline "law and order" mantle ahead of November's election.

Trump's campaign has increasingly turned to dark themes of violence and chaos as it seeks to falsely paint his Democratic rival Joe Biden as anti-police. Since protests spread throughout the country following the murder of George Floyd, Trump has worked to cultivate a tough-on-crime message that includes the federal law enforcement efforts now underway.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump took to Twitter to address the "The Suburban Housewives of America," warning that "Biden will destroy your neighborhood and your American Dream. I will preserve it, and make it even better!"

During Thursday's Fox News interview, Trump suggested he'd spoken recently with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat who has resisted Trump's warnings he would send federal officers to her city.

He called it a "great talk," but said she and other Democratic leaders were resisting his offers to help.

"They don't want to ask," he said. "It's a disgrace."

Chicago isn't the only city that could face an increased federal law enforcement presence. Department of Homeland Security officials told CNN on Thursday that a Customs and Border Protection team is headed to Seattle where it will remain on standby to help protect federal facilities.

Masked, camouflaged federal authorities without identification showing their rank and name have already arrested protesters in Portland, Oregon, as part of the President's demand that federal buildings be protected from protesters, drawing backlash from local officials. DHS officials said agents were identified by agency insignia and a "police" label on their uniforms.

Good question. All I know is that he talks a lot about doing good, but then behind the scenes things don't go the way he said they would. He's told a lot of lies or fibs about China and this supposed trade deal. Never was one, never will be. Every promise was a way to raise the stock market and make money for all his friends. It was all a circus act from China's side as well.

It has been quiet for a little while with our military, but we still have troops all over the world, and fighting occasionally in the Middle East and Afghanistan. Trump threatened to use force against Venezuela, and allegedly we organized a coup attempt, which gave the Russians and Chinese reason to send troops and hardware. This was the same play Bush and Obama played. We routinely go into countries with the pretence of protecting the people, leave more chaos than was already there, and Russia or China comes in to wield influence and solve the problems we create. Trump also continued to a degree to do this in Syria, and now Russia has complete control. This trend has been going on for decades. And then of course there is Israel, who Trump is in bed with, and who is bombing Iran's outposts in Syria every week lately. They are all bad guys. No good guys in this world stage any more.
Just want to add too what is going on with North Korea and Trump. It is the same thing with him and China, and they are orchestrating this show for us. Currently NK is back on with the aggressive rhetoric, just like China, and just like us. They are also continuing to build up their nuclear weapons and threatening to use them. These few years of "negotiations" and peace talks were a way for the North to get concessions from South Korea. They both removed the mines at the border. They removed the guard posts and guards. The North is planning an invasion, so this pretense was for that purpose. Now we see just recently that some of North's guards are back, and even fired on the south. They blew up two buildings on the border that previously were used for joint ventures. The rhetoric against the South has increased and China continues to be their bread and butter, and will use NK to start the war which allow China to invade Taiwan. There are no easy answers on how to deal with these realities, but I see Trump as merely a puppet in this global conspiracy.
