Or maybe it's the person involved that's the problem...? :)

Years ago I asked the same thing. When we took a family trip to Idaho I had an inkling to pick up an egg-shaped black granite rock out of a river. I had the impression it had once belonged to a very powerful person a long time ago and had a very intense dream that night after picking it up. My daughter was able to pick up some interesting glimpses with it, but it overwhelmed her.

Seer stones are tools of seers. You can certainly ask and you may just get one if you're sincere. However, possessing a seer stone and using a seer stone are completely different things. They are advanced spiritual tools for advanced spirits. Not surprising that most don't seem to get what they're about, but if you read early church history Joseph was very interested in possessing them and had owned multiple during his lifetime. Later on he gave them away, claiming he had internalized their capability and no longer needed them.

That's kinda interesting to think about.

We're all here wondering what it would be like to get our hands on such magnificent thing (or some folks have impressive stories about finding one already). Yet here we have Joseph just giving them away.

If I was guided to or impressed to keep a certain rock, I have a hard time imagining myself just giving it away.

It's been a long time since I read about that, I would have to imagine Joseph gave them to people he thought deserved or needed them. What's more disappointing is that I haven't found any account of anyone actually using them outside of Joseph. I read of one account where a man was digging in Nauvoo as part of a building project and found a white stone meant for him. It is still in the possession of his descendants, but apparently he never used it. Then there was Oliver Cowdery who saw Joseph use them for translation and thought it was a simple matter to use them, but learned otherwise.

I'll add that I actually pulled two stones from the river in Idaho. The other was circular, about 6 inches in diameter, gray in color and flat. After a fitful night I was a bit overwhelmed and intimidated by them, and tossed them both in the backyard of the cabin where we were staying. When we departed I discovered my wife had retrieved the black stone as she had the impression I should have that one. These things definitely have a subtle energy and power about them, it seems most people really don't know how to deal with them and it's just easier to set them aside. Even the concept of seer stones seems very discomfiting to nearly all members (and even more ridiculous to non-members) and well beyond what people can understand or accept. I suppose that's why most are uncomfortable with the idea of Joseph putting them in a hat for translation work. It's just relegated to folklore and myth and not taken seriously these days. For those few who are sincerely interested, they will show up in your life eventually if you ask, they're all around.

Last trip to Wheeler Farm, there was a guy there selling round rocks, so I asked him about replacing my trackball. Ended up visiting his shop downtown, and odd events did occur related to said stone purchase, indeed my round rock did rock, for a time, but now me mouse doth rock more.

Ball , but not crystal. :geek: dbnp

On top of my head, I cannot remember anyone using Joseph's stones after him either. However, there were several Individuals using seer stones in the early days. An interesting example is Sophia Romeril Russell, who was widely recognized as seeress by 1880. Jonathan Stapley has written about her in The Power of Godliness, pp. 115-118.

It's been said that Joseph had a gift for finding things and that he sometimes used the stone to try and find things, even treasure (unsuccessfully, perhaps debatable).

I think my son has a gift to find things. Items will go missing and he seems to always be the one to find them, sometimes immediately. Surprises me often. Most recently a tiny piece of my glasses fell from a height of 12 feet onto a bunch of dark dirt and mud. I told him to come stand where I was to mark where I was standing, so that I could climb down and know where to look by looking up at him. I got to the bottom and before I could even start scanning the floor, he was saying "it's right there dad". When I finally found it, I pointed to confirm that he was looking at the same thing I was. Yep, he was. He found it within seconds at an impressive distance and poor lighting. I'd lost that same piece before in good lighting on flat floor indoors and couldn't find it for 15 minutes on my own!

He's 4.

Anybody have any treasure maps I can give him?

Some people have extraordinary eyesight and capacity to take things in. One workmate of mine could spot tarantulas at 60 MPH on the Pony Express trail. So naturally, one that went by the name Fluffy Goldilocks became a fun, but slightly terrifying short term pet. It was fun watching him pounce on crickets from Petsmart.

Fluffy , but not gut load. :geek: dbnp

True, but not everything he found had to do with eyesight. This was the latest example.
