I tried finding the original source I had read the story, but haven't been able to find it online. It must have been something I read in print. But I will relate the story I had read to the best of my memory.Robin Hood wrote:I am not familiar with this incident.Lexew1899 wrote:Even in the city of Nauvoo when Joseph Smith revealed the doctrine of sealing, the people rejected it. They demanded he renounce it. He was left with no choice but leave his dinner table and take back the revealed word of God. Even his own counselors failed to stand by him. So much for one heart and one mind.
Please could you elaborate, reference, or both.
I would like to know more.
PM me if you prefer.
Thank you.
The story took place in Nauvoo. Joseph Smith gave a talk about the doctrine of sealing. I am not sure what he said about it in particular. In those days meetings were more of a informal event from what I understand, similar to a revival perhaps from their previous upbringing. People would give talks that could be lengthy. One might stand up and talk for an hour, another stand up and talk for 45 minutes, another after him an hour and a half. I don't think there was any real time limits on them. In consequence of this people would come and go throughout the day to listen to speakers.
Anyway after Joseph Smith gave a talk he walked home to have dinner. Emma had fixed a meal and it was said the Joseph barely had time to sit at the kitchen table before there was a ruckus at the door. A message was relayed to him that people did not like the message he had just given about sealing, and wanted him to take it back.
So he returned to the meeting. He gave another talk on the subject, basically talking back the points of doctrine he had said. He was very displeased with his counselors who didn't back him up on the matter. He even turned to them in the middle of his talk and talked down to them.
I was able to find this quote from the Millennial Star about this incident...
Here is the link for it, Vol. 55. The date the story ran is Sep. 4th under the section, Reminiscences of the Church in Nauvoo, page 2.“On May 23, 1843, I listened to a discourse preached in the Nauvoo temple, which was then only partially finished. Brother Joseph was talking on the pre-existence of our spirits, and our relations to God in the spirit world, and our standing in the family circle of our Father. Now I am telling the truth, and I remember that while thus talking he suddenly turned around to the Apostles sitting on the stand and said in effect: ‘Brethren, if I were to tell you all I know of the kingdom of God, I do know that you would rise up and kill me.’ Brother Brigham arose and said, ‘Don’t tell me anything that I can’t bear, for I don’t want to apostatize.’ Brother Joseph, addressing the Apostles, then said: ‘The weight of this kingdom has been as a millstone around my neck, but I am going to roll it off on your shoulders, and then the kingdom of God will go on.’ There were eleven of the Apostles present at this time. Among them I saw Parley Pratt, Orson Pratt, Willard Richards, Geo. A. Smith, Brigham Young and John Taylor. I don’t remember the others.”
