Ok, I'm just lazy

Post by Obrien »

The internet is a great tool for sharing knowledge and opinion. I'm hoping to tap into your smarts tonight. Today I was thinking about temples, specifically Kirtland and Nauvoo. The contrast between the two is stark. After some thought, I got to wondering about the Salt lake Temple. I think I remember the temple lot being selected pretty early on in the basin experience. I seem to remember foundation problems, and burying the foundation during 1857ish. Finished in 1890's. My question is this: When did BY decide to build the temple, and why? Any serious replies will be appreciated. I do NOT want stories about the pink room, sushi...

From what I remeber he had a vison of the temple and spot durring his journy to utah.

The foundation was buried due to the threat of the us gov comming and destroying it. They took down what they had buried it and planted it into a field befor the soldiers came to find nothing and went there way.
They then unearthed it and started over.

Dedication 6 April 1893 by Wilford Woodruff
Site 10 acres (4 hectares)
Floor area 253,015 sq ft (23,506 m2)
Height 222 ft (68 m)
The location for the temple was first marked by Mormon prophet Brigham Young, the second president of the church, on July 28, 1847, just four days after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley. The temple site was dedicated on February 14, 1853 by Heber C. Kimball. Groundbreaking ceremonies were presided over by Young, who laid the cornerstone on April 6 of that year.[12] The architect was Truman O. Angell, and the temple is said to feature both Gothic and Romanesque elements.
The capstone—the granite sphere that holds the statue of the Angel Moroni—was laid on April 6, 1892, by means of an electric motor and switch operated by Wilford Woodruff, the church's fourth president, thus completing work on the temple's exterior

Toni - thanks for the links and the other info. Saturday, I was busy work working (manual labor) all day and did not have the ability to search for info. By Saturday night, I was worn out, still had to prep for my GD lesson Sunday am, but I still was curious about the origin of the decision to build the SL temple. I hoped someone would know and share Saturday pm, but my hope was in vain.

I have had a little time to follow up today, and I read your links. I see a reference to a book in 1965 that discussed an oblique reference at Winter Quarters to bringing your precious metals to spread salvation (or something like that). I am still curious to know WHY BY decided to build temples. He had just been expelled from Nauvoo, and left the dedicated but unfinished structure to their enemies. They had previously left the Kirtland temple. The time, effort and money expended on these ultimately failed structures would have weighed heavily on such a pragmatic man as BY. What drove him to build another in SL valley? Was there a written revelation? Did he "feel" a temple was the way to unify the people? Was it just a "yankee guess" that panned out?

I was aware he had said he saw a vision of it as a finished structure at it's current location, but that doesn't constitute a command to build it like Joseph got about Kirtland and Nauvoo. Still wondering and searching.

I have never seen a reason as to why. Perhaps the trauma of not finishing the Nauvoo temple on time put fear into him and he decided that, never again, would the saints shirk in their duty to build a temple.

Toni - I got what I think is the answer tonight, while taping drywall and re-listening to the DS talk on Elijah.

And you are just going to leave us hanging . . .

Without combing through the whole talk for an answer, my guess would be that the church members wanted it. According to what I have heard, people were lining up outside of the Nauvoo temple trying to get their endowments. They would have wanted temples as soon as possible when coming to Utah.

OK, I have listened to 4 different DS talks since Saturday during my drywall experience. They are long and ponderous and require pondering. Sadly, they all run together in my sieve-like mind. Of course, DS covers a wide variety of topics in any given talk, so to say a talk is about "Elijah" or "the temple" or "Constitutional Apostasy" is really false advertising on his part.

Regardless,I was re-listening trying to find the exact reference so I can post it, but I haven't found it yet. Anthony, you know how it is when your hands are full, you can't stop doing what you're doing, and you can't take anything but a mental note? I took a mental note and mis-placed it... when I find it I'll post it.
