If you are a woman, yes. ;)Jezebel wrote:Certainly I did not mean to imply that a righteous man would be guaranteed to have his wife follow him. My main point is that I believe a man has a better chance at softening his wife than a woman does at softening her husband. Possibly so. I know that years ago, there was a 1/6 chance of a non-LDS husband joining his LDS wife, and about 1/2 chance of a non-LDS wife joining her LDS husband.
If that is true, then though we struggle with the difficulty of dealing with fallen spouses, we will have a firmer foundation to stand on if we understand these things.

My daughter says all her friends are talking about "50 Shades." The term young teens use nowadays is not SM but rather BDSM. One can imagine what this movie is doing for hits on porn sites featuring this stuff.JohnnyL wrote:BTW, parents and Sunday school teachers, don't be surprised if your young teenager knows what SM is... ;(
I had a talk yesterday with the children about 50 Shades, Twilight, etc. It went well.
Thanks!
Oh, and I have heard that most all the people flooding the theaters for this movie are women. Quagmire would love to go to this film due to the ratio.

Re: Fifty shades of black and blue and grey?
I have read the first book and have struggled with the writing. Within BDSM consent is given and for some reason this guy just doesn't give a toot. Again, this is simply a fantasy story and not sure why everyone is all stirred up about it. Surely there are worse stories out there. It's a weak book and doesn't reflect the reality of a BDSM relationship.coachmarc wrote:It seems that these books and this movie are feeding the fantasy that women should put up with such abuse in the slim hopes that a man just might love them. I found this video on Youtube and it makes a powerful point. And perhaps this problem is why women are fantasizing about this stuff, or at least from what I gather, is more popular with women.
It's not about a woman shutting up and putting up with it actually. It has more to do with Dominance & submission, kinks, fetishes, sadomasochism, and everything else. Honestly how people choose to live their personal lives in none of my business. Good for them if they ramp it up in their bedroom. However this book was poorly written. It should have been a long term committed relationship/marriage where they ventured into this direction. I think it would have been far more realistic. The likelihood that a billionaire is going to sweep a recent college grad off her feet... well that's not likely!
Believe it or not many women crave the Dominant man and I think this is what is drawing them to this book. They want a man who's in control and can take the lead. Men today have been so striped of their masculinity... it's the sad reality thanks to feminism.

Actually BDSM is not porn. It's a lifestyle. Not everyone lives in a "vanilla" relationship.Fiannan wrote: My daughter says all her friends are talking about "50 Shades." Sadie, would the story be as appealing if the guy wasn't a billionaire, but instead lived in a back woods broken down aluminum trailer, working as a dishwasher and missing his front teeth? Just curious.

Now that seems like an idea for a reality show for American television.coachmarc wrote:Sadie, would the story be as appealing if the guy wasn't a billionaire, but instead lived in a back woods broken down aluminum trailer, working as a dishwasher and missing his front teeth? Just curious.

No. Actually the story isn't well written at all. It's not realistic to reality. Life doesn't work the way this book is written.coachmarc wrote:Sadie, would the story be as appealing if the guy wasn't a billionaire, but instead lived in a back woods broken down aluminum trailer, working as a dishwasher and missing his front teeth? Re: Fifty shades of black and blue and grey?
Maybe I'm old fashioned. I have absolutely no clue what the reality of a BDSM relationship is like. I do agree that how people spend their private lives is their business and not my own. I haven't read the book(s) and don't plan to, but the point of this topic is what is being glamorized in our society. The envelope of sexuality is being pushed, regardless of the kind of relationship. The fact that it glamorizes "Dominance & submission, kinks, fetishes, sadomasochism, and everything else" as you put it, is the issue.sadie_Mormon wrote:...It's a weak book and doesn't reflect the reality of a BDSM relationship.

This is the direction the rising generation is heading. And the fact that marriage has been degraded in society makes such lifestyles even more attractive. Sure, it should have been a long term committed relationship story, but that kind of story doesn't sell anymore. That's why the guy in this story has to be attractive and super wealthy or the fantasy doesn't really work. That is why I gave another version of elements in my previous post. What makes for a popular mystery fantasy would in reality be little more than a criminal minds episode.
Edit: Here's a doctor's blog article about this kind of behavior, for what it's worth: http://www.megmeekermd.com/2015/02/a-ps ... s-of-grey/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Fifty shades of black and blue and grey?
I agree with you on what you wrote Coach.
Most that live the lifestyle never wanted it "out" because they like their secret world to be left undisturbed. They feared it may put naive inexperienced people into dangerous compromising position which would lead to an abusive situation. Put this power in the hands of someone dangerous and they can do serious damage. Personally I believe some things should be left in the background with no attention pointed to it and BDSM is one of them. For those who live the lifestyle it's time and commitment that builds that level of trust between them to do these things. My fear is that people especially women will take this story too literally and think this is a normal BDSM relationship, it's not.

Re: Fifty shades of black and blue and grey?
The only thing that interests me about this movie is the title.
Why 50 shades of "grey"?
What does it mean?
Why "grey"?

Re: Fifty shades of black and blue and grey?
I think it's a play in words. I think the guy's last name is Grey so the story seems to be about him.

Is that all?coachmarc wrote:I think it's a play in words. I think the guy's last name is Grey so the story seems to be about him.
So there's no dirty joke or clever punch line I'm missing?

Re: Fifty shades of black and blue and grey?
I don't know. I haven't read the books or watched the movie. But the fact that the story seems to not be about either black or white, but about an obscene number of gray shades and/or Grey's shades is joke enough for me.

Re: Fifty shades of black and blue and grey?
50 Shades is merely part of Hollywood trying to appeal to women's sexuality. The cable networks have added more sex and nudity to their dramas not to entice male viewers but to get women to watch. Unlike what many people still believe it has been found that as long as mainstream film and TV features women as powerful then women are totally okay with lots of sex in the plot.
As for romance novels, which I will also note is not what women are thinking about when asked if they access porn, check out the front covers at the local market -- lots of muscular bare chested men on the covers. If men were into reading novels I doubt you would see the covers featuring large breasted women with no shirts on. However, I really doubt too many young, educated women read traditional romance novels anymore - much more interesting stuff out there.
