Good Gentile Music

Post by mhewett »

I was making up a playlist of some of my favorite music of which a huge amount is what some refer to as gentile music. Some of the music can also have a gospel type of meaning (although not necessarily intended) and can be quite uplifting. One I love is Linkin Park's "what I've done" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkwW9tdOV6Q" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and Luther vandross singing "The Impossible dream" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJQTTfdv0jk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .

I love 'what I've done' because it is about changing your life for the better. In a gospel sense it could be likened to repenting and putting the things about what you have become, in the past where they belong, leaving your old life and starting a new life. I love 'the impossible dream' because it is about trying no matter what obstacles you come across to reach whatever your dream is. In a Gospel sense you could say not letting things stop us from reaching exaltation.

What is some of your favorite gentile music that can also have a gospel meaning?

ok I'll bite. when I was a kid, I remember the song Puff the Magic Dragon. I always liked it until I was told it referred to smoking marijuana. as a nice young Pharisee in training, I naturally eschewed the song from that time, henceforth and forever, amen.

earlier this year, by chance I heard an interview on NPR with Peter and Paul ( apparently May has passed on). the topic of Puff was discussed. Peter and Paul categorically stated they did not write the song about drug use. iifc, it was a bedtime song for one of their kids. they were emphatic in debunking the drug angle so often tired to Puff.

altho they have no redeeming characteristics, I also like the who, pink Floyd and the stones (that said, one of the nice things about growing up is the diminished need to frenetically consume popular music).

A few examples of deeper-meaning music:

The woman singing this is religious I might add: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hmzR1CKGtA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Linkin Park...a future where humanity has sacrificed itself? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFJnu2Pi8jQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Would have been an excellent theme song to the new Noah movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S2a-ZyPU-0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A couple more.

I have run to the ocean
Through the Horizon
Chased the sun
I've waited for the light to come,
And at times I would give up
You have
Wrapped your loving arms 'round me,
And with your love I'll overcome.
You have
Loved me when I was weak,
You have
Given unselfishly,
Kept me from Falling...Falling
Everywhere but my Knees!

You set me free!
To live my life
You became my reason to survive the great divide
You set me Free!

I've been on Heaven's doorstep,
With the Door open,
One foot inside
I've cried out...God give me answers!
Please hush child I'll tell you why
You have
Loved me when you were weak,
You have
Given unselfishly,
Kept you from
Falling...Falling
Everywhere but your Knees!

You set me free!
To live my life
You became my reason to survive the great divide
You set me free!

Oh...our love is beautiful
Oh...oo...oh...Isn't it beautiful?
Times have changed
But you remain
My everything
Our Love is Beautiful
Stood by my side
Helped me survive
My great Divide
Isn't this is beautiful.

You set me free!
To live my life
You became my reason to survive the great divide
You set me free

I love the music and lyrics of Mumford and Sons. Holland Road and Awake My Soul are two favorites. Both give me the idea of pressing through errors, deceptions, faults and weaknesses and humbly seeking God.

"When I hit the ground
Neither lost not found
If you believe in me
I'll still believe

And I'll still believe
Though there's cracks you see
When I'm on my knees
I still believe"

The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel
Peace Train by Cat Stevens
One Day by Matisyahu

Obrien, I love folk music, particularly Peter, Paul and Mary. Puff the Magic Dragon has been a favorite for a long time. Their song If I Had a Hammer is a great activist song.

This is one of my favorites:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLr6G8Xy5uc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I look around and see my wonderful life
Almost perfect from the outside
In picture frames I see my beautiful wife
Always smiling
But on the inside, I can hear her saying...

"Lead me with strong hands
Stand up when I can't
Don't leave me hungry for love
Chasing dreams, what about us?

Show me you're willing to fight
That I'm still the love of your life
I know we call this our home
But I still feel alone"

I see their faces, look in their innocent eyes
They're just children from the outside
I'm working hard, I tell myself they'll be fine
They're in independent
But on the inside, I can hear them saying...

"Lead me with strong hands
Stand up when I can't
Don't leave me hungry for love
Chasing dreams, but what about us?

Show me you're willing to fight
That I'm still the love of your life
I know we call this our home
But I still feel alone"

So Father, give me the strength
To be everything I'm called to be
Oh, Father, show me the way
To lead them
Won't You lead me?

To lead them with strong hands
To stand up when they can't
Don't want to leave them hungry for love,
Chasing things that I could give up

I'll show them I'm willing to fight
And give them the best of my life
So we can call this our home
Lead me, 'cause I can't do this alone

Father, lead me, 'cause I can't do this alone

Obrien wrote:altho they have no redeeming characteristics, I also like the who, pink Floyd and the stones
2 Floyd songs were "Wish you were here" and "Shine on you crazy diamond" which are 2 songs written about Syd Barrett (original Pink Floyd singer) and how bad choices can ruin your life and trap you. The intro music to shine on, to me, is almost haunting but these songs are incredible tributes to a man that got caught up in drugs, paid the price and never recovered.

I like some of the Who but was never much into the stones. In my youth if you ever hopped in my car you would have had to put up with AC/DC and loud, really loud, maybe that is why I have this constant ringing in my ears :) anyway I have reformed a bit since then. I actually had a ticket to see AC/DC many years ago but my mission call came X( I left in January but the concert was february, sacrifices i have made for the Gospel, i tell you! But if there is a band with no redeeming characteristics I have to admit AC/DC are near the top of the list.

I haven't heard any Public Enemy, I'll have to check it out, I love the offspring too since they started, sometimes in my job, I'll put some on and sing, I should say yell along to it, just as well no one else is around, really would be noise pollution.

Yes that is a great song, I had never heard it before. I don't know if you like Dream Theater but they have a song called "the best of times" which is tribute to the father one one of the band members. I think of my sons when I hear it sometimes, if they felt that way about me when I die, I would be very happy. It is a beautiful tribute.

I LOVE the last two groups you mentioned. Love and Some Verse and Flightless Bird American Mouth are my favorite songs by I&W.

I'll have to check out the other ones you mentioned.

My favorite group is the Avett Brothers. Their songs are heavily influenced by family and faith. Check out Salvation Song. Going to see them in February!

Seeing Ryan reminded me of one of my favorite songs...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KwEuNapzt0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Dream Big
(Ryan Shupe & The Rubberband)

When you cry, be sure to dry your eyes,
'Cause better days are sure to come.
And when you smile, be sure to smile wide,
And don't let them know that they have won.
And when you walk, walk with pride,
And don't show the hurt inside,
Because the pain sill soon be gone.

(Chorus)
And when you dream, dream big,
As big as the ocean, blue.
'Cause when you dream it might come true.
But when you dream, dream big.

And when you laugh, be sure to laugh out loud,
'Cause it will carry all your cares away.
And when you see, see the beauty all around and in yourself,
And it will help you feel okay.
And when you pray, pray for strength to help to carry on,
But when the troubles come your way.

(Chorus)
And when you dream, dream big,
As big as the ocean, blue.
'Cause when you dream it might come true.
But when you dream, dream big.

When you cry be sure to dry your eyes,
cause better days are sure to come.
And when you smile be sure to smile wide, and
don't let them know that they have one.
And when you laugh be sure to laugh out loud,
'Cause it will carry all your cares away.
And when you see, see the beauty all
around and in yourself, and it will help you feel okay.
And when you pray, pray for strength to
help to carry on when the troubles come your way.
(Chorus)

Some people may think they are cheesy, but I really enjoy Celtic Woman. My favorite is Chloe Agnew (who has since gone solo) because of the purity and sweetness of her voice.

Yes, I do realize this is a cover of Don McLean's song, lol

Only one Bob Marley song? :-o

Here is one that has always resonated with me... "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother"

Another one of my favorites... Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole... "E ala E"

"Rise for justice the day has come
For all our people to stand as one,
We the warriors born to live
On what the land and sea can give
Defend our birthright to be free
Give our children liberty"

Another all-time great by my man Israel... "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

Bob Marley - Redemption Song
