Liahona Foundation "Adopt a Stake"

A group of posters here on LDSFF have decided they would like to adopt a Stake through the Liahona Children's Foundation. This is still in the planning stages. All that would like to participate are welcome to do so.

The plan is to establish a money raising website similar to the one Bro. Jones set up for house donations. When more details are available they will be posted here.

If you are not familiar with this organization you can read more here.

Thanks to Caddis and Jockeybox for spearheading the fundraising.
Thanks to Ajax for the initial thread.
Thanks to the Lord for blessing us with sufficient to share.

Here is a link to the donation site.

I do reserve the right to change a couple points in case it's determined the Cambodia Stake isn't the most urgent. However, that can't be determine until Sheila gets back to caddis and I wanted to get this posted like I had promised.

I put a deadline of January 31. It's arbitrary. We can end it before or after that date. I just had to put something in.

I know some voiced a concern of placing money in a monthly manner. I would suggest to go ahead and donate your monthly amount and we'll worry about next month later.

P.S. If I botched anything (like grammar, spelling), don't hesitate to let me know. I did this kind of quickly.

I think I got my family onboard with donating to this instead of getting each other presents this year for Christmas. Thanks for getting this organized!

What about donating directly through the Liahona Foundation website? Or does that takeaway from the added 'excitement' of seeing a running tally of how much support is coming directly from LDSFF peoples?

At least that youcaring.com site doesn't take any fees.. so that' probably a good way to raise money together as a group before sending it off to the Liahona Foundation.

This is a bonding activity. It's more fun to do this with friends.

How in the world did you do that!? I just got my husband to be okay with me donating $20 here and there to people who really need it.
Sigh...baby steps.

I see how that was misleading. My married siblings all share gifts. We are going to donate here instead this year. The kids will all still get presents.

Here is what I got back from Shaela Avery. I let her know in a follow up email we were thinking about the last un-adopted Stake in Cambodia because we were under the impression that's the area with the greatest need. I asked her if she had any suggestions on this. I will let you know when I hear back.
Thank you for your interest in the Adopt-A-Stake Program. We truly appreciate your generosity and desire to help.
Brad is correct, you do not have to raise the $6000 up front in order to adopt a stake. Some donors choose to do $500/month, and others donate every couple of months. All that matters is that the yearly contribution equals $6000.
To get started, you would just need to tell me which stake you would like to adopt, the date when you plan on making the first donation, and the names of those who will be donating. Donations can be made by check or online through PayPal. Also, when submitting your donation we ask that you make sure to indicate which stake it is for so that the funds are allocated correctly.

Do names like Obrien, jockeybox, boo, and caddis hold water with the IRS for a tax deduction?

Hey! That's a good idea! I have family on both sides that do sibling gifts. We usually do a $30 limit per family. That's an easy $300.00, assuming everybody gives only what we would have spent... :-? I know at least some of them would prefer donating to charity!

It depends on whether you are part of the blue team or red team. For me I'm not on either team so I'm just out of luck I guess.

Hmm, you're right. I don't care what stake it is. As long as someone is getting help, that's all that matters to me.

Can this thread be pinned until Jan. 31?

I know many people enjoy the "benefit' of getting a tax break by paying tithing to The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Let me suggest you experiment on the word and alter your giving for the end of 2014. Give all the money you PLANNED to give to the LDS Church to the youcaring link noted above.

Try the Lord and see if He approves of this course of action. All it takes is $600,000 to fund all 88 stakes that need to be adopted. That sounds like a lot, but it's peanuts among 3-4 million tithe payers.

This really is so beautiful...definitely will be spreading the word to family and friends as well as donating.

Did I see something about being able to donate using Paypal somewhere or was I just imagining things?

You can donate using Paypal on the LCF website. The money goes to their general fund I believe. I'm still waiting to hear back from Shaela about whether or not people can make a donation through the LCF website and earmark the money for a specific Stake. Hopefully I hear something soon.

Here's the latest:
Your group is welcome to donate directly to LCF, and at the end of the year all donors will receive a summary of their donations for tax purposes.
To ensure that their donation is directed to a specific stake, they will need to indicate it. So, if they are donating online through PayPal, they can type the stake name in the message area to specify which stake it is for, or if it is via check, they can indicate on the check the name of the stake. Having a list of donor names helps me track Adopt-A-Stake donations on our end in case if someone forgets to note a specific stake, but if they wish to remain anonymous we understand.
As for Cambodia, you are actually the third person to inquire about that specific stake in the past few weeks, and there is a good chance one of the other two individuals will adopt it. But there is a need in many areas, so you really cannot go wrong with choosing a stake from another country. As for which area/country has the greatest need in terms of malnutrion rates, I personally do not know. I do know that in terms of numbers, we actually have some stakes/districts in the Philippines where there are two programs running due to the large numbers of children. And there are programs in Africa, Ecuador, and Peru that are also full to capacity. But like I said, with whichever area you choose you will be helping children in need.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Thank you again!

Sincerely,
Shaela Avery
It sounds like the last Cambodia Stake is going to be adopted. Does anyone have any suggestions on a specific Stake they think we should adopt? I don't really have a preference myself.

On a slightly different note. While going the youcaring.com route is cool so we can see a running tally of what has been donated, it doesn't appear they accept Paypal or personal checks. Once we decide on a Stake, if some of you want to donate to our Stake directly through LCF using Paypal or personal check, I would be glad to keep a donation total (on this thread) if you want to update me about how much was donated. All info besides $ amount will be kept anonymous.

Here's a recent article about LCF in Colombia.

Caddis - did we ever "pick" a stake? I didn't see it above, but I might have missed it. Please advise...the end of the year is coming up. Also, I am going to put the bite on the GD class Sunday, and it would be nice to have a specific stake to tell them about.

1 more quick question - if they get an excess of funds for our adopted stake, do they use it this year on another stake or keep it for next year?

1 more question - if they get ENOUGH excess funds, are there plans to build a mall in the stake? Ok, I'll strike that... :)
