How to strengthen our hearts?

Post by Thinker »

Scriptures speak of how the hearts of men shall fail them, or the love of men will wax cold.
I believe that "as a man thinketh in is heart, so is he."

Heart disease is the #1 killer, killing more Americans than the other top 5 killers combined!
This morning, as I was listening to Whitney Houston's "Greatest love of all" - and her sad end, as well as others like Robin Williams... and many others who have committed suicide - either quickly or slowly.

I want to exchange ideas...
How we can strengthen our hearts - both physiologically and spiritually?

Make getting into the best shape of your life (for your age, that is) a top priority in 2015. You will like yourself better, have a better attitude toward life, drive away certain kinds of depression, and have more physical and emotional energy to be of service to others when the need arises. If you are a temple rec. holder, find a way, if possible, to attend the temple once a week for at least 2 months in a row and you will notice your life will change dramatically.

Well, aside from our processed food society, men's heart will fail them because they faint and do not pray.

Thanks for the ideas.

Working towards helpful goals is great- particularly those that benefit us physically and spiritually.

I think praying is also an excellent reminder - and not just putting in a memorized order, but listening to God, with appreciation and hope/active faith.

I asked several in my family - & I'll give a list another time of their ideas. For now, I'll just pass on what our dog nonverbally answered - as a way to strengthen our hearts - humility. :)

Muerte Rosa wrote:I've always interpretated those scriptures as meaning that our love for one another will wax cold...meaning we will become more and more selfish and wordly....

But i think you're onto something with this too. :)
Thank you. Yes, I think they're both related...
When we turn to selfish or worldly gods/desires, it is often due to a weakened heart and "lookin' for love in all the wrong places."
Addiction - whether it is drugs, shopping, food, video games or this forum - are all attempts to fill the place of God, and they may appease us temporarily, but ultimately all fail.
And when we're looking in the wrong places for God (who is love), or when depression or health issues limit us, we're less likely to love others as ourselves.

Ideas gathered from our family (some listed by you insightful people)...

-Prayer
-Social connection/caring for people/service
-Exercise
-Deep Breath/Relax/Stress management
-Face fears/rethink cognitive distortion (ie let go of perfectionism)
-Education - read uplifting things
-Develop and maintain healthy coping methods - overcome life traps/bounce back after trials
-Gratitude journal
-Humility - trust in the potential for good in any trial
-Healthy diet/Ocassionally fast
-Sleep
-Hope/Faith/Love

This morning after reading BOM I was wondering more specifically what “wait on the Lord” means. After I saw your graphic I decided to look into it. I found this from the church website and I thought it was helpful and I liked it.

“ The Hebrew word translated as wait also means “hope for” and “anticipate”

This is timely. On days like today I honestly don’t know if I am one whose heart will fail them or not. I feel stretched to my capacity. God help us!

When all else fails:

Psalm 104
You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart.

Be an alchemist in your daily interactions. Take all the pain, fear, and uncertainty, transform it into love, and radiate it one person at a time.

I had a powerful revelation at one point in my life where the Lord simply whispered, “Be. Loving. Now.” to my heart, and my spirit understood that it was not a one time directive, but a standing commandment given directly to me. I fear I fail a great deal of the time, but the happiest moments of my life are when I follow that command.

Yeah, the more I've meditated, the more attention I've been able to pay attention to my thoughts, and the ability to take notice and analyse my various involuntary reactions to various people in various social interactions. The more effort I put in over time, the more I'm able to manually override all the negativity I used to conjure up in my mind/psyche (like, "Wow I was such an idiot back there, I bet they think I'm a proper retard", or "oh my days, I came off so rude to her just now, I bet that she well-hates me now") -- in my thoughts and the imaginations of my inner`monologue, as I dealt with people -- and replace it with good, positive things.

And like a proper self-fulfilling prophecy, I find that my newly-positive vibe / energy tends to be infectious, and just based on my (flawed) interpretation of the unspoken cues I'll get from this more-positive outlook: I'll find people are reacting more favourable to me, perhaps more prone to smile when meeting my gaze, and maybe more likely to give me the benefit of the doubt in whatever situation.

Even proper hardened people, who probably have a proper thick layer and membrane against the tender flicks of the Spirit, sometimes even the most flint-like hearts have distinct grooves that the Spirit uniquely knows how to exploit and capitalise on. Sometimes these are even more susceptible, its like the Spirit in your hand pummels them in the chest all badass-like, sif saying "see your sins? they're right here, and this is the junction you've come to regarding whether you address them or not", and they'll feel it in their bones and know that "something, whatever it is, follows that person", "something that forces me to face myself", and hopefully that proper fragrant incense`smell odour of enticings coming off you, will hit their bullseye in the hearts of those w/ whom you cross paths. Being christlike = projecting an infectious effect on those around you, the tone of your Spirit-amped chroma` resonance`freq, reverberating off of you in waves:
Image

The help of the Spirit -- in conjunction with concerted effort over time -- can give you incredible personal faculty/agency in controlling your thoughts / emotions in a way you never thought possible, thus opening doors to things you hadn't considered or conceived-of before. Affording you keys (through inspiration/empowerment of the Spirit) to practically re-program yourself to more-closely image the countenance of Christ.

And it radiates, like a proper contagion. Our preconceived notions of others have a way of projecting themselves thru the subtle`frequencies via our countenances.

As you become transformed, pay attention to the effect you have on those nearest to you w/ whom you interact most, and see the difference. Because that's the true measure of a man: the manner in and degree to which they influence / bless others w/ whom they interact, the capacity to awaken Christ in those around them.

In another thread, brainstorming, I realized something about the 3 main tyrannical objectives (poison/vax, control world under guise of “global warming & equality”). Those 3 are warpings of the greatest commandments - to love God and others as well as self. Evil and good are often mixed so that it’s difficult to discern which. But discern we must, to be strong and make it through the narrow way.

My guess is Christ gave us keys to making it through the way, strengthening our hearts - by emphasizing the greatest commandments. So what does it mean to:
*LOVE GOD?
*LOVE OTHERS?
*LOVE SELF?

I consider love as striving for what’s best.
God, I consider subjectively believed in. Eg., Once upon a time, I believed God was very punitive and hated me whenever I goofed up. That idea of God wasn’t the best. Now I don’t know all about God, but I believe God is unconditional love & that belief works for me & others - not against. So, this makes me wonder if - in this context, loving God comes after loving self… or rather loving the “kingdom of God within” (Luke 17:21) ought to come before dogma (blindly accepted traditional beliefs).

As far as actual gods/priorities, most people have shown that they care most about themselves (1st - fear of death - vax, 2nd - hoping for praises of & trusting in others - not wanting to be called “homophobe” nor “climate change denier”). Others come 2nd & God of truth - last.

Well, obesity's a longer term project. The rest can be dropped quickly.

I was just studying fear this morning. I think we need to cast out fear to strengthen ourselves because it really holds us back.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
1 John 4:18

“Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.”
Isaiah 51:7
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

“For, behold, you should not have feared man more than God. Although men set at naught the counsels of God, and despise his words—
Yet you should have been faithful; and he would have extended his arm and supported you against all the fiery darts of the adversary; and he would have been with you in every time of trouble.” D&C 3:7

“Ye endeavored to believe that ye should receive the blessing which was offered unto you; but behold, verily I say unto you there were fears in your hearts, and verily this is the reason that ye did not receive.“
D&C 67:3

“And again, verily I say unto you that it is your privilege, and a promise I give unto you that have been ordained unto this ministry, that inasmuch as you strip yourselves from jealousies and fears, and humble yourselves before me, for ye are not sufficiently humble, the veil shall be rent and you shall see me and know that I am—not with the carnal neither natural mind, but with the spiritual.“ D&C 67:10

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the LORD,

And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

Truth is truth. Argue all you want. Won’t change truth.

Do you know a main criteria to testing medication effectiveness?
PLACEBO EFFECT.
It must be even just barely over the placebo effect to pass.
What is placebo? Basically faith.

“As a man thinketh in his HEART, so is he.”

Seems you are agreeing with me but saying that you're not? Your example uses heart as a metaphor about our soul, not our physical beating meat pumping blood. I agree with this use in the scripture, not the physical pumping heart path. IMO
