Dangerous Words in the White House

It doesn’t bother me that Trump said the word “shithole”. I don’t know if my newspaper will print that word or sanitize it. Many media corporations are shifting their normal rules about what they say or print, because the President’s vulgar words are newsworthy.

“Dirty words”, like the ones George Carlin spelled out in 1972, have one by one been moving inexorably into the popular culture. I’m still always surprised to hear the word “sucks” on TV.

I was even more surprised to see one of the contestants on a prime-time quiz show on German TV, a man named H. P. Baxter, wearing a white T-shirt with big black letters spelling out “Who the @#$%! is H.P. Baxxter?” playing on the name of a German musician. Nobody on air seemed to care.

I’ve never liked self-appointed language police. I believe we should all be able to choose our own words to fully express our meanings.

The meaning is what matters. Outraged focus on word choice can obscure the greater significance of meaning. That is happening with Trump’s “salty language”.

What bothers me is Trump’s meaning, when he said he wanted more immigrants from Norway and fewer from Africa. Any white is better than any black immigrant. It is difficult to find a clearer expression of white supremacy than Trump’s words to a gathering of Senators in the Oval Office.

I know some immigrants from Nigeria, Ghana and other black African nations, students I taught at Illinois College and their families. The students were sophisticated, multilingual, well educated and high achievers. They were a delight to have in the classroom. Some have stayed in the US in jobs or graduate school. None of them had lived in “huts”, as Trump characterized Nigerians in a June meeting.

Certainly Trump is not the first racist in the White House. White supremacy was an American principle at the founding and throughout the 19th century. Even Lincoln, the only President that Trump will grant to have been more presidential than himself, did not believe in the full equality of the races. He said in his debates with Stephen Douglas, “I am not, nor have ever been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races.”

During the 20th century, presidential thinking and action have pushed away from racist policy and language, sometimes leading, sometimes following American society’s increasing rejection of white supremacy. The election of Barack Obama could have been a sign that our national government would never again express white supremacist ideology in practice or speech.

But Donald Trump never accepted Obama’s election as legitimate. He led the most public fight to declare Obama an African and unworthy to be President. Racism in the guise of birtherism was Trump’s main political focus as he prepared his presidential campaign. He has never given up this idea.

Maybe Trump’s word choice is too crude for public and official presidential business. There might be two sides to that question. There shouldn’t be any question about advocating white supremacy in the White House.

Every elected representative of the American people, sworn to uphold the Constitution, should reject both Trump’s words and meanings. Of course, Trump denied using the words everybody heard him use. The most conservative Republicans at the Oval Office meeting pretended not to have heard them. Senators Tom Cotton (AR) and David Perdue (GA) said, “We do not recall the president saying these comments specifically.” No other Republicans who were there admitted publicly that Trump said those words, although Sen. Lindsay Graham told a fellow Senator about them.

Pretending that there is nothing to talk about appeases white supremacy at the highest level of government. Supporting such racist talk is a step in the direction of promoting racist policy.

Let’s not move backwards on racial equality, equal justice for all, support for diversity, and welcoming new Americans from all over the world. And let’s get that racist out of the White House.

Mexico rights body blames marines, police for 2014 killings

Thursday, January 18, 2018, 10:19 PM

MEXICO CITY

— A border mayor's paramilitary security team and Mexican marines were behind the disappearance and murder of four people, including three American siblings, the government's National Human Rights Commission said Thursday.

Investigators determined that city officials in Matamoros, marines, and state and federal police lied in their statements in an effort to cover up the 2014 killings, a report released by the commission said.

NEW YORK — A judge who previously rejected arguments that Saudi Arabia was behind the Sept. 11 attacks expressed doubts again Thursday after claims were revived by congressional action.

U.S. District Judge George B. Daniels in Manhattan questioned lawyers for families and survivors of the 2001 attacks as well as attorneys for Saudi Arabia during a daylong hearing. He did not immediately rule, and a written decision was likely weeks or months away.

The latest round of arguments arose after Congress passed the 2016 Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act over then-President Barack Obama's veto, allowing the claims to go forward against Saudi Arabia after they were rejected once in the courts. Some families of 9/11 victims cheered the law, hoping to see their day in court and obtain

A Modest Immigration Proposal: Ban Jews

Jan. 18, 2018
Until his dying day, my dad’s Uncle Bern was a communist sympathizer. I remember him as an affable old man with a gracious wife who made a modest living selling antique lace. He probably wouldn’t have hurt a fly. Yet he found much to admire in the most murderous ideology of the 20th century, responsible for tens of millions of deaths from the killing fields of Cambodia to the gulags of Murmansk.

If you’re Jewish in America, chances are there’s at least one Uncle Bern somewhere in your family tree. As the scholar Ruth Wisse noted last year in Tablet magazine, Jewish intellectual life in the 1930s and 40s was largely defined by one’s stance toward one thing: The Party. Historians reckon that Jews accounted for nearly half the Communist Party’s total membership in those years, while many other Jews were close fellow travelers.

Most of these people, like my great-uncle, were deeply misguided idealists who otherwise led quiet and decent lives. A tiny handful of others — including atomic spies Julius Rosenberg, David Greenglass, Harry Gold and Morton Sobell — betrayed America’s most important military secrets to Stalinist Russia and did incalculable damage to the country and the world.

Here’s a thought experiment: Would the United States have been better off if it had banned Jewish immigration sometime in the late 19th century, so that the immigrant parents of Rosenberg and Sobell had never set foot here? The question is worth asking, because so many of the same arguments made against African, Latin-American and Muslim immigrants today might have easily been applied to Jews just over a century ago.

2017 — Second Hottest Year on Record as Climate Troubles Escalate
The world continues to warm. In the geological context, it is warming very rapidly. Likely more rapidly than at any time in at least the past 200 million years. And as long as this very swift warming trend continues, as long as it is not bent back, it spells serious trouble for the world’s weather, for stable coastlines, for corals, for ocean health, for stable growing seasons and for so, so many more things that we all depend on.

2017 was the second hottest year in the global climate record. It was notable due to the fact that it followed the strong El Nino year of 2016 with ENSO neutral trending toward La Nina conditions. The short term conditions that emerged during 2017 would tend to variably cool the Earth. But the resulting cool-down from 2016 to 2017 was marginal at best — representing about half the counter-trend drop-off following the strong 1998 El Nino. Instead, much warmer than normal polar zones kept the world in record hot ranges even as the Equator tried, but failed, to significantly cool.

(Rate of global warming since the 2010s appears to have accelerated in the above graph following a strong El Nino during 2015-2016 and a very mild counter-trend cooling during 2017. Temperatures in 2018 are likely to be similar to those seen during 2017 if the present prediction for ENSO-Neutral conditions is born out. Image source: NASA.)

Overall, warming above historical baselines remains quite acute in the NASA graph. And global temperatures for 2017 were 1.12 C warmer than 1880s averages. This is comparable to the 1 to 2 C warmer than Holocene range last seen during the Eemian — when oceans were about 20 to 30 feet higher than they were during the 20th Century.

Present rate of warming appears to be at the higher end of the observed 0.15 to 0.20 C warming per decade increase since the mid 1970s. This rate of warming is approximately 30 to 50 times faster than the warming that ended the last ice age. During that time, it took ten thousand years for the Earth to warm by about 4 degrees Celsius. Now we are at risk of seeing a similar warming within 1 to 2 Centuries or less if a switch back to business as usual fossil fuel burning occurs.

(This is what a world featuring temperatures hotter than 1 C above late 19th Century averages looks like. All-in-all not a very cool place. If present levels of atmospheric greenhouse gasses simply remain and do not rise, we are likely to see 2 to 3 times this level of warming long-term and over the course of multiple centuries. Present policy pathways for additional greenhouse gas emissions will likely achieve 2-3 C warming or more by the end of this Century unless more rapid energy transitions, carbon emission curtailment, and atmospheric carbon capture are undertaken. Image source: NASA.)

NASA and other top scientific agencies point toward human CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions as the primary cause of present warming and a related growing disruption to the Earth’s climate system. Action to switch energy systems away from fossil fuels and to, as a follow-on, draw down a portion of that climate warming CO2 now in the atmosphere is presently necessary to prevent ratcheting levels of harm and disruption on local, regional and global scales.

Though mild compared to the potential impacts of future human-forced warming, present warming and presently elevated CO2 levels in the range of 407 ppm and 492 ppm CO2e are enough to generate climate disruptions of serious consequence over the short, medium and long term that negatively impact the health of human civilizations and the natural world. Meanwhile, continued fossil fuel burning and related dumping of carbon into the atmosphere is increasing the risk of catastrophic events and related mass loss of human shelter, forests, fertile growing zones, and earth system life support services. The need for response and a rapid energy transition to renewables is therefore both considerable and growing.

Grand Rapids rejects MLive FOIA appeal over police recordings

Previously released recordings on the extension, which officers believed was unrecorded, revealed discussions between three Grand Rapids police officers attempting to help a former Kent County assistant prosecutor avoid a drunken driving charge.

'Let's pass him:' Cops discuss ex-prosecutor's intoxication on recorded calls

The state Court of Appeals ordered Grand Rapids to release the recordings taken from a "non-recorded line" in response to MLive lawsuit.

The city initially denied FOIA requests for those calls as well, but a Sept. 12 decision by the state Court of Appeals forced their release. The state Court of Appeals ruled the city must release the recordings on Sept. 12. The five calls -- which revealed Lt. Matt Janiskee coached the other officers to allow former Kent County Assistant Prosecutor Josh Kuiper to get off with a lesser charge -- were promptly released a day after the ruling, in their entirety and without redaction.

2018 to see Third Consecutive Mass Coral Bleaching Event for the Great Barrier Reef?
One point two degrees Celsius hotter than average (1.2 C). That’s the temperature threshold where 50 percent of the world’s corals are likely to die off according to a scientific study written in Nature during 2013.

The El Nino year 2016 was about 1.2 C hotter than 1880s averages. Meanwhile 2017 was about 1.1 C warmer than normal despite a shift toward La Nina.

We are thus entering a very harmful period for the world’s corals. One in which corals are bleaching and dying off at unprecedented rates. The global bleaching event of 2014 through 2017 was the longest lasting and most damaging in the historical record. Many reefs around the world suffered severe losses. Reefs that had never bleached before experienced bleaching and mortality. And this event included severe damage to the majestic Great Barrier Reef of Australia.
Unfortunately, despite an official end to the 2014 to 2017 global bleaching event, ocean temperatures across widespread regions remain at thresholds that are likely to result in stress to corals. And it is arguable that if bleaching were so widespread as it is now in past decades, then the present 2018 period would still be considered a global bleaching event.

Regardless of how we parse official declarations, reef systems are obviously still under stress. Just this past week, reports were coming in that sections of the Great Barrier Reef were bleaching for the third year in a row. The bleaching was rather widespread for this time of year. It was occurring earlier than normal — generating concern that 2018 bleaching could be worse than expected come February and March. It was hoped that the large reef system would be given a bit of respite from the heat. But now that particular hope is in doubt.

Corals around the world are still under threat from extreme ocean heat despite the fact that the 2014-2017 global coral bleaching event was officially ended during summer of 2017. Image source: NOAA.
Corals are one of the many canaries in the climate change coal mine. These organisms are a vital aspect of global ocean health and the reefs they build are the present home for upwards of 2 million species. Humans depend on corals for the food chains they support and for the natural beauty they provide. And a global ocean with less corals provides both less food and support for human beings and for ocean life as a whole.

Because corals are so sensitive to temperature change, it is expected that about 90 percent of the world’s corals will be lost if the Earth warms by 1.5 C. Meanwhile, virtually all of the corals (more than 95 percent) could be gone if the world warms by 2 C. With global temperatures at around the 1.1 C threshold and rising, we are in the danger range for corals at this time. And the world stands at the brink of losing the majority of this vital species with the potential to see 90 percent or more of the world’s corals lost over the next 3 decades under various scenarios in which fossil fuel burning continues.

Warmer than normal sea surface temperatures are again threatening Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Jan 15, 2018 sea surface temperature anomaly image provided by Earth Nullschool.
Danger to corals is, today, a very immediate issue. And we are in the period of risk and damage now. This reality is highlighted by the fact that what should be a relative respite period for corals is still seeing abnormally high levels of bleaching.

During 2018, La Nina in the Eastern Pacific has generated relatively cooler surface waters in a number of locations. And we would normally expect La Nina to beat back global coral bleaching severity. However, an anomalous hot blob of ocean water between Australia and New Zealand is causing an unusual spike in ocean temperatures for the zone east of Australia (see image above). The result is that the GBR is again at risk.

Early bleaching for the Great Barrier Reef in 2018 is definitely a bad sign. However, scientists aren’t yet stating that this year will see bleaching intensity hitting levels similar to 2016 and 2017. Let’s hope that remains the case. But so long as fossil fuel burning and related warming continues, the road ahead for corals is one of existential crisis.

MASS MEDIA AND LAW ENFORCEMENT:
A TIME FOR REFLECTION

The relationship between law enforcement agencies and the print and electronic media fluctuates between mutual hostility and admiration. Historically, the admiration cycle between the two professions is short lived! The purpose of this article is to provide some observations on the impact the mass media is having on our culture and our profession. Perhaps these observations and suggestions will be further discussed, which may lead to some modification in our relationship with the mass media that could serve the department's and public's best interest.

Overview

In the last fifty years, the impact that the mass media has had on our culture has been overwhelming! Upon reflection, the influence of advertising, motion pictures, television, radio, newspapers, books, and magazines have, in my opinion, replaced families, schools, and religion as the primary influence in our lives. Whether or not the overall influence of the mass media has been good or bad is a question which will, eventually, be better answered by philosophers, theologians, and historians. However from my point of view, while acknowledging the mass media has made many tremendous contributions to our culture, there is more than enough evidence to conclude overall that their influence has not been all that healthy!

I would not argue that the mass media has conspired to achieve the prominent role they have in our daily lives. A conspiracy requires logical, thoughtful thinking and a desire to work together to achieve a common goal. These intellectual qualities are not found in great abundance in any particular segment of the mass media. On the contrary, the two driving forces of mass media are the rather pedestrian traits of competition and profit. Thus, the primary motivation for a large percentage of these type of organizations is to find ways to tell a story in a compelling and accurate way, or to take the easier way out by debunking traditional values and institutions, reveling in the exposed clay feet of public figures, or seeking a controversial aspect in every story, or social issue, as a means to achieve an audience. This leads to either greater recognition or profits.

These characteristics--profit and influence--are the two fundamental objectives of the mass media industry. These goals are not inherently evil. They only lead to evil consequence when the rules of law and common decency are ignored. If profit is your only objective, and all other rules and consequences are ignored, then there is no barrier to the generation of evil consequence, whether intended or not! For example, the producers of pornography intend for their product to have evil consequences. Unfettered by either law, or decency, these producers rely on the fact that trash sells. On the other hand, a movie director who creates a scene in which the star is smoking a cigarette is probably not intending to promote smoking by children per se, rather the director may be trying to achieve a certain degree of realism. However, the unintended consequence of the scene may be that young children think smoking is cool, which by the way, does not qualify as an evil consequence, just a stupid one.

In this environment where no one is held responsible for the consequences of images that may influence other people to do evil acts, it is not surprising that some segments of the mass media have decided to appeal to the darker side of human nature in order to make a profit. This doesn't require a great deal of talent, genius, or hard work to accomplish! The argument that mass media, or the arts, is merely a mirror reflection of society falls considerably short as an attempt to justify the scarcity of noble intentions by some of the people in this industry.

While convenient to blame the media for all our current social ills we must, in all honesty, place a larger portion of the blame on ourselves--the consumer! We are the ones who buy the tickets, the newspapers, the magazines, and support the advertisers. We are the ones who watch television, listen to the radio, see the movies or watch advertisements, and thereafter, allow ourselves or our children's behavior to be influenced by what was seen or heard! We are the ones whose behaviors, however influenced, often lead to violence, misery, and degradation.

What is most important in relation to this article is that law enforcement exists in a culture that is heavily influenced by a very complex, often disturbing, yet influential mass media industry. It is very important that law enforcement officers understand the impact of the media on our job for the following reasons: First, we see first hand the violence, degradation, and lack of ethical behavior by people as a consequence of the mass media influence. Second, at times our own egregious actions arise from what officers see on television or in the movies. Third, law enforcement agencies occasionally offer technical, and other support, to movie and television crews to produce a product that glorifies those character traits to which we should be adamantly opposed. Fourth, we must understand that the work of law enforcement--enforcing the law and all of the ramifications of doing so--has become a primary source of news on television and the subject of countless television series and movies. Most of the time what we see from the entertainment industry is an over-glorification of law enforcement work. Most of the television news and print media stories about law enforcement are factual, positive reports about actions that we have taken in the community. And from time to time some of these stories are critical of the department. Law enforcement needs to acknowledge that some criticism is occasionally justified. Last, in our efforts to either educate the public or justify our existence, we use the various forms of the media to send our own message to the public. For the above reasons, it is clear that law enforcement and the mass media have a relationship that calls for more interaction than just exchanging barbs, insults, and an occasional slap on the back.

The Nature of the Media

When one uses the word mass media, it should be noted that the definition includes all forms of both the print and electronic media. In each of these categories, there are many different forms--newspapers, magazines, television, movies, radio, and the Internet. Within each of these separate businesses there are either a couple, or a thousand, companies involved in the production of a media product. This diversity renders any effort to label a single sector of mass media as good or bad, liberal or conservative, virtually impossible. While it may be expedient to tar all forms of the media with the same brush, in reality it is not fair to do so. One mistake we have always made in law enforcement is labeling the print media as "liberal," or thinking that most reporters are anti-cop, or that newspapers are anti-law enforcement. While there may be some basis for these using these labels with a some reporters and a few newspapers, the labels become inaccurate when used across the board. If we continue to stereotype all members of the mass media as unfriendly, then any effort we make to influence their behaviors, or products, will be rejected.

It has been said by many commentators that the real power of the media is the ability to set the agenda of what we--the consumer--read, see, or think about. For example, a newspaper has to chose a few stories to report each day from the thousands available for wider publication. The same is true with television news. What is finally chosen to be reported reflects the best judgment of the directors or editors as to what they think is important to the consumer or, in some cases, what stories will sell more papers or attract more viewers. This is setting the agenda--not what to think, but rather, what to think about! I think it is fair to assume that most of these people are honorable and decent men and women. A few are not. These would be those persons who make selections of stories not based on importance to the viewer or reader, but rather run stories that are profitable and appeal to the bias, or fears, of the reader/viewer. Thus, we have been deluged with stories of movie stars' and athletes' antics, the latest environmental disaster, violent crime, Monica, and the latest medical/scientific advance, which eventually proves to be wrong!

We really don't see much time or space devoted to distant events such as the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch, civil unrest in Indonesia, starvation or disease in the former Soviet Union, or the dark side of corporate life. I suspect the reasons for this lack of coverage lie in the fact that sending television crews or reporters abroad is expensive, the story is too complex and beyond the ability of the media to cover or, perhaps, the temerity of the media to bite the corporate hand that feeds them.

The one common desire of mass media is to achieve a high degree of credibility through accuracy, and hopefully, obtain some influence within the community. One of the major strengths of the American people, however, is that they have never been willing to grant the press a great deal of credibility, although one must admit the influence of the entertainment media, which includes television entertainment, movies, and radio, is significant throughout North America. I suspect the reason for the difference in influence is print journalism seeks to influence directly, while the entertainment and advertisement media try to influence indirectly. The average American doesn't want to be told what to think, but if the message is more subtle, we are all a bit more susceptible to an indirect influence.

Technology

All forms of the mass media rely on technology to produce their products. This technology may be as simple as a printing press or as complex as mobile transmission units using satellites to send live signals back to the station. Regardless of the complexity, all technologies as they apply to mass media products are subject to time constraints. For example, the printing presses have to run by a certain time in the evening to produce a newspaper that can be home-delivered by early morning. Television news footage has to be back in the studio by a certain time to be appropriately pruned for the early evening broadcast. Live broadcasts are even more time sensitive.

Homeland Security used a modified version of the Anonymous logo in a presentation on surveillance
DHS decided that the best way to illustrate their surveillance methods was with a version of the Anonymous logo that was originally created to criticize mass surveillance in Pakistan
Written by Emma Best
Edited by JPat Brown
A presentation from Homeland Security on Intelligence Oversight Training appears to include a version of Anonymous’ “man without a head” logo that was modified to depict a surveillance state. Perhaps even more interestingly, the image has a preexisting copyright and appears to have been originally used in an article describing Pakistan’s mass surveillance system - a system that appears to liaise with the National Security Agency.

The Anonymous logo itself is licensed under Creative Commons, making it free to share and use. In 2012, however, Anonymous and some of its supporters were upset and vowed retaliation when a French company attempted to copyright the logo for use on some of its shirts. The French company, however, didn’t significantly change the logo. The version found in the DHS presentation was noticeably and significantly modified. As Twitter user @Paulmd199 pointed out, however, it undoubtedly used the Anonymous logo as a starting point, as it incorporates the details on the figures’ upper arms. While the image is subject to copyright, the version in the 2017 DHS presentation lacks the copyright markings of the 2015 version produced by The India Times.

The copyright holder, BCCL, is alternately known as Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd and as The Times Group. While BCCL licenses stock images and stock art for public use, this image doesn’t appear to be sold on their website. Instead, it seems to have been produced specifically for the article titled “ISI sought massive intel data collection tools.”

While the modified Anonymous logo used in the DHS presentation isn’t the only preexisting image that DHS appears to have lifted for use in its presentation, it’s arguably the most tone deaf. Anonymous is, largely speaking, anti-surveillance and pro-privacy. The image itself appears to have been specially created for an article critical of Pakistan’s mass-surveillance efforts, an article based on a report that notes the cooperation between American, British, and Pakistani intelligence and surveillance.

To DHS’ credit, the slide in question discusses consensual surveillance and the use of Open Source Intelligence methods. The presentation itself, however, isn’t limited to that. The next slide, for instance, notes that “physical surveillance and the use of mail covers and monitoring devices” are permitted under certain circumstances.

Other slides, at least, have enough self-awareness to acknowledge the Church and Pike Committees’ investigations into “questionable intelligence activities.”

Unfortunately, the presentation treats these abuses belong in the past.

According to the DHS presentation, these issues have been addressed by things like FISA, which doesn’t continue to be controversial and hotly debated at all.

The presentation notes that there is an Intelligence Oversight Board which looks into questionable activities.

As for who sits on that board, and who watches the watchers and who safeguards the privacy of Americans? That information is restricted to protect their privacy.

You can see the full presentation below, or on the request page.

FBI man gets 7 years for child sex
*
A 17-year veteran of the FBI will serve seven years in prison for having sexual relations with a young girl in Spotsylvania County, a judge ruled yesterday.
Anthony John Lesko, 44, entered an Alford plea yesterday in Spotsylvania Circuit Court to nine counts of felony indecent liberties upon a child.

Lesko, who later moved to Jacksonville, Fla., worked as an intelligence analyst at the FBI for 17 years, according to his attorney, James A. Carter II. He is a major in the U.S. Army Reserves and has received numerous military awards.
An Alford plea means Lesko doesn't admit guilt but believes there is enough evidence for a conviction. Under the terms of the plea, he was sentenced to seven years in prison with another 15 years suspended.
Lesko engaged in a sex act with a girl, 9 and 10 at the time, at least nine times in 2003-2004, according to evidence put forth

The Passamaquoddy’s attorney was the victim of a state-sponsored conspiracy while doing work that led to the Indian land claims settlement act.

As the Press Herald reported in a 29-part series published in 2014, Gellers was framed in 1968 for the “constructive possession” of a single marijuana cigarette as part of a shocking state-sponsored conspiracy involving the sitting attorney general, his staff and the leadership of the Maine State Police. The elaborate raid on his home occurred while Gellers was driving back from Boston, where he had just filed a suit asserting the treaty rights of the Passamaquoddy tribe, including the possession of a majority of the state. His work eventually led to Maine’s 1980 tribal land claims settlement act.

The records — provided by the state’s Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training in response to a Public Records Act request — didn’t indicate which individuals on the list actually worked in law enforcement nor the departments where they were employed.
Instead of providing any more information, POST referred the reporters to state Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s office, which wrote the reporters a letter calling the release of the records “inadvertent

Aurora offers final contenders for new police discipline review board
By The Sentinel -
December 8, 2014

AURORA | City officials are close to instituting a new review board that will look at select police discipline cases and give city leaders advice on how to handle them.
Out of a list of more than 50 people who applied for spots, the city council public safety committee has whittled those names down to 21 individuals. Once the names are approved by the full city council, the board could be active as early as the first week of January, said Aurora City Manager Skip Noe.
What city officials are calling Aurora’s Independent Review Board, or IRB,  comes on the heels of protests in Aurora and nationwide in response to New York and Missouri grand juries returning no indictments against police officers. On Friday, around 400 students  from Gateway, Overland, Rangeview, Hinkley and Aurora Central high schools walked out in protest of those decisions.

Read time: 3 mins

Gulf states have sent at least 42 current or former employees of the fossil fuel industry to the UN climate summit in Madrid as part of their official delegations, DeSmog analysis shows.
More than half of the delegation from Kuwait and almost a third of Saudi Arabia’s representatives attending the Madrid meeting, known as COP25, are associated with the oil and gas industry. The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar collectively sent at least 16 delegates associated with the fossil fuel industry.
Many of these affiliations were not declared on the official preliminary delegate list, provided by the UN.

Homeland Security Agents Reportedly Paid for Sex Acts by Trafficking Victims

By Steve Neavling

ticklethewire.com
Two Homeland Security agents investigating a transnational network of illegal massage parlors engaged in sex acts with the alleged victims in two Arizona cities, according to reports uncovered by Today’s News-Herald.
The reports indicate two agents participated in sex acts at massage parlors at least 10 times with Asian immigrants who were forced into sex slavery.
The two-year trafficking investigation began in 2016, when police were tipped off about several massage parlors in Lake Havasu City and Bullhead City in Arizona. When local police departments found evidence that some of the employees may have been victims of human trafficking, they called in the Department of Homeland Security.
According to investigative reports, the agents negotiated prices for hand jobs and other sex acts.
In September 2018, police arrested eight people on charges of sex trafficking, money laundering, and operating a house of prostitution.
But charges against two of the suspects were dismissed last wee

FBI objects to lawyer's deposition request regarding Oklahoma City Bombing
The attorney is seeking evidence linked to his brother's death in a federal prison facility in Oklahoma City

Nichols says in his affidavit that a high-ranking FBI official "apparently" was directing Timothy McVeigh in the plot to blow up the government building and might have changed the original target of the attack. He alleges he wrote then-Attorney General John Ashcroft in 2004, offering to help identify all parties who played a role in the bombing, but never got a reply.

Both Nichols and Hammer - who says he had lengthy conversations with McVeigh during the 11 months the two were housed on the same tier at the Terre Haute facility - say McVeigh claimed to be an undercover operative for the military.

Hammer wrote in his affidavit that McVeigh said he made trips in the two years before the bombing to a white supremacist settlement called Elohim City in Adair County, Okla.

Meet the CEOs Cashing In on Trump’s Aggression Against Iran
by SARAH ANDERSON

CEOs of major U.S. military contractors stand to reap huge windfalls from the escalation of conflict with Iran. This was evident in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. assassination of a top Iranian military official last week. As soon as the news reached financial markets, these companies’ share prices spiked, inflating the value of their executives’ stock-based pay.
I took a look at how the CEOs at the top five Pentagon contractors were affected by this surge, using the most recent SEC information on their stock holdings.
Northrop Grumman executives saw the biggest increase in the value of their stocks after the U.S. airstrike that killed Qasem Suleimani on January 2. Shares in the B-2 bomber maker rose 5.43 percent by the end of trading the following day.
Wesley Bush, who turned Northrop Grumman’s reins over to Kathy Warden last year, held 251,947 shares of company stock in various trusts as of his final SEC Form 4 filing in May 2019. (Companies must submit these reports when top

The Necessary Embrace of Conspiracy
by
Robert Shetterly

Several years ago I gave a talk on Martha's Vineyard about many of the people whose portraits I've painted in the Americans Who Tell the Truth series. I spent some time talking about the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. When I talk about King, I like to focus on his last year --- the period when, defying the advice of many of his advisors in the civil rights movement, he spoke against the Vietnam War, equating racism with imperialism. King felt bound to make the point that the forces of capitalism, materialism, and militarism that were driving segregation were also driving the war, and until we confronted the source of the problem, the abuses would continue. It was April 4, 1967, in Riverside Church in New York, that he made that declaration. A year to the day before his assassination.
It has always confounded me every year when we celebrate Dr. King's life that no mention is made of that Riverside Church speech in the major media. We are always treated to sound bites of the 1963 I Have a Dream speech. That speech's oratory is as powerful as it is non-confrontational. Which is why it is re-played for modern audiences. Dr. King was about confrontation. Non-violence and confrontation, each ennobling and making the other effective. In 1967 he said, "... my country is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today." And he explained how our economic system thrived on exploitation and violence, or, as Emma Goldman put it, "The greatest bulwark of capitalism is militarism." This was probably the most important speech King ever gave and not playing it when we ostensibly honor him, is tantamount to castrating him morally and intellectually. Just as there is a long history of White America castrating black men, there is an equal legacy of Elite America cutting the most important truths of our social prophets out of the history books. We pay homage to King's icon, the cardboard cutout, but not to his strongest beliefs and his most cogent analysis of our problems --- to what vision called forth his courage. And, if we think that he spoke the truth, to censor that truth is to promote a curious kind of segregation. He is segregated, not for the color of his skin, but for the accuracy of his perception, how close to the bone his words cut. We can't bear to hear the sound of truth's knife scraping on hypocrisy's bone. Only people who actually want to change the system dance to that music or want it to be heard.
Equally important, and part of the same neglect, is the intentional ignoring of the facts of his death. In my talk on Martha's Vineyard I spoke about William Pepper's book, An Act of State: The Execution of Martin Luther King, Jr. Pepper had been James Earl Ray's lawyer. Ray was the man convicted of killing King. But both Pepper and the King family were convinced that Ray was innocent. The King family hired Pepper to represent them in a suit; they asked only $100.00 in damages to clear Ray's name. Before the trial came to court in 1999, Ray had died in prison. The jury determined that King had been assassinated by a conspiracy involving the Memphis police, the Mafia, the FBI, and the Special Forces of the U.S. Army. Ray, the patsy, had left town before the shot was fired. Pepper had confessions from people involved from each of the organizations named. The verdict was barely mentioned in the U.S. media then and is not mentioned every year on the anniversary of his death. Why?
After my talk on Martha's Vineyard a man came up to me and said, "I enjoyed your speech and was with you until you started that conspiracy stuff about MLK, Jr." I said, "That's not conspiracy. What I told you are facts." End of conversation.
I think we're confronted with two conspiracies here: one to commit the crime, the other to ignore it even when the facts are known. ( Two sides of the same coin.) The man who accused me of slipping into the neurotic, aliens-are-among-us land of conspiracy nuts was unable to hear the evidence, perhaps because he was so utterly convinced by our government and media that conspiracies don't exist, people who espouse them are dangerous fruitcakes, and if you begin to think like that, your whole house of cards wobbles then topples. Who wants that? Better a standing tower of marked cards, than having to admit the game is rigged and the ground is shaking.
America is steeped in conspiracy, and even more steeped in propaganda that discredits those who try to expose the conspiracies. Whether we're talking about MLK, Jr., JFK, RFK, Iran-Contra, 9/11, or, most importantly, the status quo, anyone who works to uncover the truth is branded a "conspiracy nut" and discredited before any evidence has a fair hearing. The government/corporate/media version is THE VERSION. Anything else is illusory.
In fact, the cultural success of labeling investigative reporters and forensic historians, and, simply, anyone who tries to name reality, "conspiracy nuts" is perhaps the most successful conspiracy of our time. Well, not the most successful. That prize goes to the conspiracy to give corporations all the rights of individual persons under our Constitution. That conspiracy has codified and consolidated corporate power so that it controls our lives in almost every meaningful way. It controls the election funds of our candidates, and them once they are in office. It controls our major media including public broadcasting. It controls the content of our television programming. It controls how are tax dollars are spent making sure that the richest get the most welfare. It controls the laws, the courts, the prison system and the mind numbing propaganda that we are the greatest democracy on earth. It controls the values with which we raise our children. It controls our ability to dispense justice. It controls how we treat nature, how we deface our land with strip malls, and blow the tops off our mountains --- a form of corporate free speech. It dictates our modes of transportation. It controls our inability to respond to true crises like climate change. It attempts to create a spiritual deficiency in every person that can be filled and healed only with stuff --- and no stuff is ever enough.
As Richard Grossman puts it, "Isn't it an old story? People create what looks to be a nifty machine, a robot, called the corporation. Over time, the robots get together and overpower the people. ... For a century, the robots propagandize and indoctrinate each generation of people so they grow up believing that robots are people too, gifts from God and Mother Nature; that they are inevitable and the source of all that is good. How odd that we have been so gullible, so docile, obedient."
It is obvious to say that we have been engineered into a culture that values competitive consumption and consumers instead of community cooperation and citizenship. Capitalism with its obsessive and necessary appetite for consumption, expanding markets, resource depletion, and increasing profits has consumed democracy. Have you ever watched a small snake swallow a large frog? The snake's hinged jaw stretches wider and wider, squeezing the frog millimeter by millimeter into its gullet until finally the snake looks like the Holland Tunnel might if it had devoured the Titanic. Then the acids and enzymes do their corrosive work. The frog becomes the snake. And the snake claims it is the frog. Capitalism has gulped down democracy and claimed it is democracy. When, immediately after 9/11, President Bush advised Americans to demonstrate their love of freedom and their resistance to terrorism by courageously, selflessly, hurrying to the mall to buy something, he was speaking as the snake that identifies itself as a frog. He was asking us to play a little game with our brains' synapses, replace the snake icon with the frog's. Sadly, he may also have been speaking about democracy in the only way that he can understand or recognize it. And, for him, Christianity has been another tidy meal for the snake.
Perhaps this switcheroo is nowhere more obvious than in the military /industrial complex. We are told that the vulnerable frog needs protecting. The threats are grave. So we fork over our money and children's lives for war and weapons. We are told that we are building security and peace. More lives. More weapons. What we aren't told is that the largest US export to the world is weapons. What we aren't told is that enormous fortunes are being made from the arms trade. What we aren't told is that the more precarious and unstable the world is, the better the business for the arms dealers --- that the real promotion is not for security and peace but insecurity and war, that the lives of our children are the necessary collateral damage for this monster. What we aren't told is that the only real security is in cooperation, conservation, and fairness, not imperialism. The frog, who is a snake, wrapped in a flag, pleads for patriotism and counts the cash. The snake's forked tongue is a barbeque fork on which we've all been roasted.
I'd call that conspiracy.
The neocons have claimed, with some accuracy, that they can create reality faster than we can react: the deed is done, now deal with it. The troops have invaded, Halliburton, Blackwater, and Lockheed signed their contracts, the prisoners are tortured, your email is bugged, the resources for social programs are gone, the laws are changed, the Wal-Mart is built, the sludge dump has already polluted the aquifer, truth is hollowed out ---- catch me if you can! How is that not conspiracy?
The cooks & the crooks create a new status quo, legalize it, propagandize it, mythologize it, fundamentalize it, slather it with fear and patriotism, and force feed it to the complacent, sedated cow we call America. How is that not conspiracy?
Of course, ever since the Constitution was signed and didn't free the slaves or give the vote to women, poor folks, Native Americans and freed blacks so that people with power and money could continue to profit, America has been a conspiracy against itself. It's been cowboy grilling his own heart over a smoke & mirrors campfire, a CEO with inherited wealth and three hundred years of patrician, affirmative action crooning "Only in America."

The reason we can't talk about conspiracy is because it is the modus operandi. It isn't the elephant in the room, it is the room itself. We all live there. We can impeach a few elephants, and we should, but the architecture is in place. And they control it.
When I was in school, I was reminded - repeatedly --- to avoid using an indefinite pronoun without identifying whom it refers to, as in, "They are coming to get us," ... or, "They control everything." Who are They? It's bad practice to think and write like that. Without reference it just sounds like paranoia. But the hell of it is that it's damned hard to say who the They are that are in conspiracy to destroy democracy and, by exploitation, nature. Did They do it on purpose or merely discover by serendipity, like cavemen seeing copper ooze out of a rock by a fire, the wondrous possibility and power of what they had found. For instance, the invention of the TV was not a conspiracy. But once the realization of how TV could be used to submerge the public in a lobotomizing swamp of advertising, sound bites, inactivity, community destruction, titillation, false history, empty myth, consumption, and complicity in making fortunes for the sponsors, the program was clear. Conspiracy was the silent partner in the euphemism good business practice. And, once they saw the implications of giving corporations First Amendment rights, they were home free.
Time to re-think conspiracy.
We need to embrace conspiracy in two ways. One, admit that it's real, its quotidian, it's the fabric of our lives, the mercury in the air, the dioxin in the water, it's filling the airwaves and the marketplace and the courts and the halls of Congress before we even get out of bed every morning. Two, counter it with a conspiracy of our own. On our side we have the fundamental fact that although the corporate They can alter many of our realities, they can't alter Reality. They can't change the behavior of Nature. They can sell off the rain forest, but they can't leverage the effect of cutting it. They can keep the mileage of cars poor so we'll buy more gas, but they can't alter the amount of oil in the ground or the damage to the atmosphere. They can privatize every human interaction and every natural resource, but they can't privatize the laws of nature. They have conspired to change reality. We must conspire to live in harmony with Reality.
In the same way, they can conspire to kill Martin Luther King, Jr., but they can't totally eradicate the truth of who did it and why.
Con + spirare, from the Latin. To breathe together. Those are the roots of conspiracy. Breathing together doesn't sound like an activity of the ideologically deracinated whispering seditiously in a dank cellar or a board room, foul breaths denting a weak flame flickering over a candle nub, gunpowder or greed blackened fingers setting a timer, the whites of creased eyes glinting like knives with treason, murder, power, and deceit. Con + spirare sounds like healthy men and women standing in the sun figuring out how in the hell they are going to take care of each other and their aging mother Earth and love life while doing it. Breathing together, sharing the same air, plotting to make sure that what's mine is yours, conspiring to save their self-respect, their ideals, the future for their children.
I want to be part of a conspiracy. Pervasive, populist, revolutionary, and totally transparent. Grassroots. Idealistic. Simplistic. Life-affirming. Community building
A conspiracy to make the common good and the love of nature the common denominator of every economic transaction.
And the simple truth is either we start breathing together, conspiring big time, right out in the open, nakedly, unashamedly, or we will have conspired in secret, by default, in our own demise.
We have let them breathe for us, and they have stolen our breath, our air, our spirit.
Secret con + spirare is death. Open con + spirare is life.
Conspiracy is dead. Long live conspiracy!

The Department of Justice Coverup of its Spying on Me Continues
By Sharyl Attkisson

There has been a lot of water under the bridge since 2013 when CBS News first publicly announced the forensic evidence proving I was victimized by a long-term, remote effort to illegally spy on me and my CBS work through my computers. (You can watch the original news story below):

A half dozen independent forensics exams later, with uninvited government IP addresses definitively identified as pathways into my computers, with forensic testimony from a former NSA specialist, with a sworn statement of confirmation from a former FBI Unit chief, and with a former federal agent confessing to being part of the government’s illegal spy operation against me and many other U.S. citizens,  it is reasonable to ask: Is the Department of Justice (DOJ)  alarmed by the shocking injustices and crimes? Is DOJ interested in holding accountable the federal agents who are responsible? Is DOJ concerned with making sure the activity has stopped and does not happen to others?
Apparently not.
Going on seven years now, the DOJ remains precisely where it started: in huddle down and cover up mode. Rather than acknowledge the forensic evidence and dig deeper to identify all of the agents who touched the illegal operation and all of the victimized Americans, and rather than being incensed by the confession of a former federal agent who admitting spying on me, DOJ has used unlimited taxpayer dollars to block pursuit of the facts.
In a just or fair system, the DOJ would  not have searched for legal excuses to dismiss the lawsuit I filed to bring the abuses to light… in fact, there would be no need for me to pursue a civil court case because the DOJ would have already prosecuted the guilty parties.
Yet here we are.

The fact is, DOJ is the entity that is supposed to administer law and order in our country. DOJ should be prosecuting the guilty federal agents. Yet DOJ officials were the ones who employed and tasked the guilty federal agents.
As Senator Ron Johnson pointed out in a recent letter to the DOJ and FBI, both agencies have stonewalled for six years refusing to answer basic questions about the intrusions into my computers. Instead, when they have responded at all, it has been to avoid the questions and replace them with answers to questions never asked.
It is no surprise to me that the Inspector General recently flagged FBI and DOJ officials for egregious misconduct involving government surveillance of former Trump campaign associate Carter Page, that an FBI lawyer allegedly doctored documents to wiretap Page, that DOJ has had to admit at least two wiretaps against Page should never have been granted, and that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court belatedly ruled the wiretaps were invalid. All of that is a little late. Page cannot recover his privacy or his reputation.
We could have seen this coming had we paid attention to the red flags and demanded real accountability. We already knew DOJ secretly subpoenaed phone records of Associated Press reporters and surveilled then-Fox News reporter James Rosen. We

Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division Launches Repair Voucher Program
January 29, 2020 (Minneapolis) – The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is proud to be the newest law enforcement agency participating in the Lights On! program. Starting today, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office will no longer be issuing fix-it tickets for broken headlights, taillights, brake lights, or turn signals. Instead, deputies will be handing out vouchers to have these issues fixed at a participating auto service provider.
The Lights On! program is a partnership between law enforcement agencies and MicroGrants, a Minneapolis non-profit focused on helping low-income people break the cycle of poverty. Fixing minor issues such as a broken brake light can go a long way towards breaking the cycle of poverty – individuals who ignore a fix-it ticket are at risk of having their license suspended. A study by the state of New Jersey found that 42 percent of people whose licenses were suspended lost their jobs, and 45 percent of those who lost their jobs could not find new employment.

“Programs like Lights On! are a win for everyone,” said Hennepin County Sheriff David P. Hutchinson. “These vouchers lead to safer cars on the road and better interactions between law enforcement officers and the public. Most importantly, by avoiding tickets, we’re preventing a ripple effect that can seriously affect the financial stability of low-income individuals.”
More information about the Lights On! program, including a list of participating auto service providers, can be found here. To donate to the MicroGrants organization, click here.

Mask mandates are coming to more states. They were controversial in 1918, too.
The controversy over government mask mandates and how to enforce them was a huge issue more than a century ago, when the 1918 influenza pandemic killed 675,000 people in the United States and caused an estimated 50 million deaths worldwide, the Power Up newsletter reports. Those who did not comply with mask rules faced fines, public shaming or even prison.
A Seattle street car conductor refuses to allow passengers to board without a mask. In Seattle, public health officials required passengers and employees wear masks as a precautionary measure. National Archives
Fines then, as now, could be steep: Penalties for mask violations in San Francisco ranged from $5 to $100 — which in today’s dollars is about $85 to more than $1,700. In West Palm Beach, Fla., violations of an ordinance that closed all public meetings and gatherings of any kind until the flu had passed carried a penalty of a “$100 fine or 30 days in jail. In 1918, $100 carried the purchasing power of $1,762 today,” according to the Palm Beach Post.
Typist wearing mask, New York City, October 16, 1918. National Archives
Not dissimilar to today’s culture war, the “mask slackers” in 1918 viewed mandates as a threat to personal freedom: “A week ago, I laughed at the idea of the mask,” local Red Cross Chairman John A. Britton told a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle at the time. “I wanted to be independent. I did not realize that the cost of such independence was the lives of others.” And viewing masks as a sign of weakness — as President Trump previously suggested — also appears to be a timeless attitude in particular among men, who in 1918 also needed more convincing than women to wear masks.

Testimony of a Computer Expert
The following is the written testimony submitted by computer expert Robert Strunk to Judge Richard Niehaus after the Judge had ruled in 1985 that the Cincinnatus PAC's suit against the Hamilton County Board of Elections was correct.
The Judge had stated in his ruling that: "There is no adequate and proper safeguard to prevent the computers from being programmed to distort the election results." This is one of the most superb statements ever issued by any computer expert since computers began to be used to count votes in the United States circa 1974.
The system Strunk is warning against is the CES IBM punch card system which is still being used in much of the nation in 1996. Despite Strunk's devastating expose of the weaknesses of the system, the Judge failed to provide a remedy to the wrong he had diagnosed, and the system is still used in Cincinnati as of this writing in May of 1996. - Jim Condit Jr.

The Hidden Story of Pablo Escobar's Queen of Cocaine, as told in The Big White Lie, by NY Times Bestselling Author, Michael Levine.

Sonia Atala, without any doubt, was not only the most powerful woman drug trafficker in the world, but also, by far, the most beautiful. She sold cocaine globally for the Bolivian government at a time when Bolivia was the source of 90 percent of all cocaine being processed in Colombia. She was Pablo Escobar's chief source of supply. He named her "La Reina con la corona de nieve" The Queen with the crown of snow. The queen of cocaine.

Sonia, who never served a second behind bars for shoveling mountains of cocaine into the brains and veins of Americans for more than a decade was both a DEA Informant and a CIA Asset. I posed as her lover during Operation Hun, the deep cover sting operation that brought down the whole Bolivian cocaine government. The only place on earth that you can read the true story and understand why it has been hidden from the world for decades, is in The Big White Lie. Spanish Translation: La Guerra Falsa

The Vaccine Lies that Bind: FDA, EBS, J and J and the regulators of the EU, South Africa, Canada and Mexico

I have repeatedly warned about vaccine that might have illegally sneaked out the back door of the Emergent BioSolutions Bayview Baltimore plant.
How did Emergent-made J and J vaccine, from a factory that was out of GMP compliance on every single one of its FDA inspections, and never received authorization to ship out vaccine for Americans, find its way to Europe, South Africa, Canada and Mexico?
How does that happen? When did it happen?
And since it did happen, why would I believe no Americans got the vaccine?  What was FDA's role in this fiasco?
Here's what the FDA's acting Commissioner said on April 21, breaking FDA's long silence about whether the plant was authorized or not:

"... the FDA has not authorized this facility to manufacture or distribute any of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 Vaccine or components and, to date, no COVID-19 vaccine manufactured at this plant has been distributed for use in the U.S..."

Remember, this is not simply about mixing up an ingredient between the Astra-Zeneca and Johnson and Johnson vaccines.  There were many, many problems that led to the loss of millions more doses. The plant was maintained in a slovenly fashion. You can read the latest FDA inspection report here. An April 21 NY Times article summarized the findings:

A series of confidential audits last year, obtained by The Times, warned about risks of viral and bacterial contamination and a lack of proper sanitation at the Baltimore plant.

According to the May 6 NY Times:

The F.D.A. has now called into question the equivalent of about 70 million doses from the plant, most of it intended for domestic use, and may decide that none of that vaccine can be released in the United States, those officials said.
However:

Some doses from a single batch of the vaccine produced at Emergent are being administered in Europe, without problem, officials said. In addition, about six million to nine million more doses are now on hold there and in the other countries

Here is how the FDA's acting Commissioner tried to wriggle out of this mess. It sounds good at first:

For the vaccines already manufactured, the products will undergo additional testing and will be thoroughly evaluated to ensure their quality before any potential distribution. We will not allow the release of any product until we feel confident that it meets our expectations for quality.
But there is a big problem here. Not just the fact that somebody already did allow the release of product.
Testing finished vaccine lots cannot identify all the potential serious problems with vaccines.  If it could, it would not matter what shape the factory was in, because you could simply test each lot and throw away any that were bad. The reason FDA plant inspections are so important is because product testing is insufficient to identify potential problems with vaccines.
I clearly recall a GAO report to Congress by Dr. Sushil Sharma about anthrax vaccine (that incidentally had also been made by EBS), which explained this point.  What it means is that Janet Woodcock, the acting Commissioner, is attempting to mislead everyone by claiming that with additional testing, the lots produced while the plant was far out of compliance are not adulterated and can still be used.
The regulators in the other nations that received the bad lots of J and J vaccine repeated her identical, fallacious excuse.
While Dr. Woodcock is trying to cover her derriere (probably FDA knew about and approved the shipments of vaccine to other nations) there is no way either the FDA nor Emergent can squirm out of the hole they have dug for themselves.
From the NY Times:

Neither the F.D.A. nor its parent agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, would say what role, if any, the federal government played in the shipment of Johnson & Johnson doses abroad, or when and where they were shipped. White House officials did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

It is strange that after having failed so many prior inspections over 2 decades, Emergent BioSolutions was chosen to lead the US' response to Covid. It is slated to produce 4 vaccines and 5 other Covid medications.

In a statement to The New York Times, an F.D.A. spokeswoman said the agency was “in close communication with our foreign regulatory counterparts regarding this ongoing matter to ensure they’re aware of the situation...”
Does this mean FDA notified them of the May 6 NY Times revelations, informed them the jig was up, and they needed to come up with a uniform story?

Emergent referred questions to Johnson & Johnson and the F.D.A. “They control where the product goes after we manufacture it,” Matt Hartwig, a spokesman for the company, said in an email...

The European Union’s drug regulator, the European Medicines Agency, said in a statement to The Times that one batch of vaccine manufactured at the Emergent facility “is being used” after “a thorough testing of the batch and a review of the controls in place at the manufacturing site.” There is no indication of any problems with those doses.

That batch was distributed for use in the European Union only after meeting “the rigorous quality standards of our company and the European Medicines Agency,” Johnson & Johnson said in a statement...

Under its contract with Johnson & Johnson, Emergent manufactured the active ingredient for the vaccine in bulk, and the substance was then sent to other facilities for final processing and packaging...

The thing is, since Emergent knew it had not passed its inspections, it also knew its product could not be approved for use.  So why did it ship it out for final bottling and finishing? Why did J and J collude with them to do so?
Everyone involved in this sordid tale has now gotten burned.  It looks like there is plenty of blame to go around.  The only thing missing is a prosecution.
The problem is pernicious secrecy. EBS, J and J, FDA and most likely the regulatory agencies of the EU, Canada, Mexico and South Africa had to have known there were problems with this vaccine.  But they chose instead to look the other way, until their charade was uncovered by the New York Times.
And even after recipients started dying from blood clots and bleeding, the regulators, EBS and Johnson and Johnson kept the truth of the substandard vaccine they had released for use close to their chests.
And now the government regulators are still trying to fake us out by fancifully claiming they can test their way out of this. These same duplicitous apparatchiks were perfectly willing to inject trash into the arms of millions of their fellow citizens.
And already in Canada, and next week in the US, it might be injected into the waiting arms of 12 to 15 year olds.

von der Leyen and the 4.1 billion doses/ NY Times

I am a week late getting this NYT article out.  While the Times hints that von der Leyen bought the Pfizer vaccine for her political survival, the paper provides no evidence. My guess is that this is a cover story.  You have to explain 4.1 billion doses for 448 million people some way.  Politics is easy to blame.

The new contract will include a 900-million-dose order through 2023, with an option for another 900 million, Ms. von der Leyen said in an interview.
“I am convinced that we are in this for the long haul,” she said...
Accounts of how the deals came about, related by Ms. von der Leyen, Mr. Bourla, Mr. Marett and another nine officials and experts involved, reveal a striking alignment of political survival and corporate hustle...
Mr. Bourla said he built a bond with Ms. von der Leyen...
Mr. Bourla said he expected a booster would be needed six to twelve months after people get their second shot, although some public health experts note that it is not clear yet whether that will be necessary. And the assessment includes a worst-case scenario for a new vaccine to target an “escape mutant,” a variant of the coronavirus that is too resistant to existing shots. The draft says the European Union would require 640 million doses of this type of vaccine for two doses per adult...
Ms. von der Leyen said the European Union could still procure doses from other companies. [Yet more vaccine???]
She said the bloc was following the development of protein-based vaccines made by Novavax and Sanofi, as well as mRNA vaccines from Moderna, which are already being used in Europe, and CureVac, which is under review by the E.U. regulator. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which was rolled out in Europe this month, is also attractive because of its single-dose regimen and easy storage, she said.
The Pfizer shot is also expensive. While the financial details of the new agreement have not been disclosed, the previous contract priced the shot at approximately 15.5 euros, or about 19 dollars, making it the second-most expensive vaccine in the region after Moderna.
European Union members will each decide whether they want to use their full allocations of doses, or leave some for others to absorb, or to be resold or donated. They will also be free to make bilateral agreements with other pharmaceutical companies for vaccines in the future... [And even more possible vaccine]

Ireland finally paying benefits for 2009 swine flu vaccine-caused narcolepsy cases

€1.2m for girl diagnosed with narcolepsy after swine flu jab  FRI, 07 MAY, 2021 - 15:33

ANN O’LOUGHLIN
A mediator in the High Court action of a 16-year-old girl who sued claiming she developed a rare sleep disorder after receiving a swine flu jab has recommended a €1.28m award in her case.
The teenager, who cannot be named by order of the court, received the Pandemrix vaccine when she was almost five years of age.
She was diagnosed with the sleeping disorder, narcolepsy, and cataplexy, an associated muscle weakness, four years later.
Her counsel Jonathan Kilfeather SC told the High Court it had been hoped the young girl, who is very hardworking and bright, would have gone on to study medicine.
Her case follows the case of a 16-year-old boy who settled his action last November in a groundbreaking settlement that paved the way for the resolution of 80 cases over the Pandemrix vaccine.
Settlement
It was agreed under the terms of the settlement that 50% of the settlement figure would be paid out, which in the case of the 16-year-old girl the High Court heard comes to €1.28m.
The court previously heard there are extensive benefits in the settlements which include educational supports, accommodation costs in relation to third-level education, a “gold” medical card, as well as childcare costs.
The girl had through her mother sued the minister for health, the HSE, and GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals SA (GSK) — the producer of Pandemrix.
GSK was previously given an indemnity by the State concerning any adverse reactions to the vaccine.
Mediation between the sides took place and a determination was issued last month which was before the High Court yesterday for approval.
Liability on 50:50 basis
According to the determination of the mediator, liability had been agreed on a 50:50 basis.
The girl, according to the mediator’s report, reacted almost immediately after having received the vaccine in December 2009 and by January 2010, her parents became concerned as she was falling asleep at mealtimes and returning from school exhausted.
Since then, the report said the girl has continued to suffer from daily excessive tiredness and excessive sleepiness and would nap for three or four hours every evening after coming home from school.
In 2013, a diagnosis of narcolepsy and cataplexy was confirmed, and a treatment plan was put in place.
The girl’s mother told the court her daughter has very good support at home and at school and her medication has been life-changing.
She said they hope their daughter will make the best of the situation.
Approving the award Mr Justice Kevin wished the girl all the best for the future.
The judge said the girl can look towards other careers in the field of medicine which would not require her to be on call.

WHO to rename money pox. I kid you not/ Stat

 From today's Stat News:

"... Tedros also confirmed that the WHO is working with partners to devise new names for the monkeypox virus, the disease it causes, and the clades of the virus, which currently are named after the parts of Africa where the corresponding viruses are found in nature.
Over the weekend a group of experts, led by a contingent of African scientists, called for the action, saying that the current names are stigmatizing and do not follow naming rules that the WHO has established."
Do you think the term MONEY POX might have had something to do with this?
