What The ?????.....
I'm looking for either clarification or affirmation. I was told yesterday by a close friend that a particular mission president in the northwest had to confiscate over 50% of the iPads from our missionaries because of pornography?

Re: What The ?????.....
any idea what the actual percentage was? 99% is > 50%, and that would add light to the picture.
I listened to a Christian preacher a few months ago who has been working on a program to help Christian men overcome / acid pornography.I don't remember the actual numbers of the study they did, but their data indicated that virtually every man with reliable internet access has viewed pornography.

Re: What The ?????.....
In order to clarify or affirm, someone would have to know which mission.
Is this close friend a parent of a missionary in that mission? Where did he/she come across the information? It's possible that it's true, but putting it on this forum isn't going to clarify anything. If you want clarification you go to the source. Posting it on this forum is just spreading/starting a rumor.

When the decision about giving everyone DVD players came to my mission president he pulled me and my companion into a meeting and said, "elders, I know I have taught you to be 100% obedient to leaders, but I am going to be slow in obeying this." He thought DVD players would do more harm than good and to my knowledge, never had them while he was president.

And ipads are even more insidious as far as access to p0rn than DVD players. I've thought this was a bad idea from the beginning, as is the whole social media "sweep the world" idea.TannerG wrote:When the decision about giving everyone DVD players came to my mission president he pulled me and my companion into a meeting and said, "elders, I know I have taught you to be 100% obedient to leaders, but I am going to be slow in obeying this." Re: What The ?????.....
My first thought was that at least 25% of the other missionaries either aren't telling the truth about it yet or haven't figured out how to hack their iPads.Ruby wrote:In order to clarify or affirm, someone would have to know which mission.

While at BYU back in 2007, I took a Sex and Gender class as part of my psych degree. Apparently the grad students there performed an anonymous survey wherein male undergrads were asked whether they had viewed pornographic materials within the previous two weeks. The anonymous response was an incredible 70% YES. That's with honor codes, filters, and the whole shebang.
When I heard missionaries were getting iPads, I thought that was a tremendous leap of faith.

Re: What The ?????.....
If this is true, this is quite serious.
Even so, as a returned missionary myself, I would have loved being able to carry the area book and google maps about the area, in a small device, than in a three-inch binder that had expanded to five inches with all the paperwork inside.
One doesn't have to be limited to campus-wide filters. You go on a public area outside of BYU campus and ANYTHING becomes visible. That is how Wi Fi works. Provo isn't all about BYU campus. Just walk across the street to Brigham's Landing where you have the restaurants there and that is a PUBLIC area NOT governed by BYU regs.

This reminds me of the time you said Spencer was a Church employee, had recieved a company car from The Church and that it was The car of his vision. :ymhug:

I don't know if this is possible? My daughter has an Ipad on her Mission and she says there are so many blocks on it. Unless of course these guys found out how to unlock those sites? Am I just being naïve? :-\

I'd say it's like rock climbing vs using a ladder. The addicted will find crevices in the rocks in which to insert themselves and thus climb over the wall/blocks. But I would venture that sisters don't struggle with that as much.Aradel wrote:I don't know if this is possible? My daughter has an Ipad on her Mission and she says there are so many blocks on it. Yes, they can be unlocked. The young men serving as missionaries are more up-to-date on this stuff than the mission presidents, generally speaking. They probably got practice unlocking ipads given to them by their high schools.

Re: What The ?????.....
The missionaries in my ward were telling me that the Zone Leaders make unannounced random I pad checks frequently . When they do the regular missionaries leave the apartment w/o their devices and aren't suppose to come back for a while. The question arises in my mind as Plato asked who guards the guardians ? I also know in a neighboring stake they have 40 % of their young men come home early. My stake president told me that church wide it was 10%. The challenges grow

Re: What The ?????.....
Seriously though, say you've got a Zone Leader who is totally one of the good kids, and has tried his best all his young life to avoid porn like the plague, as he's been counseled, and now a mission president is sending him in to search for porn on his fellow missionaries' iPads. How the heck is he supposed to find it without at least occasionally, accidentally, viewing it? Gee, that's really short-sighted.

I wonder if the regular missionaries are considered apostates if they "question" their Zone Leaders too much.Jeremy wrote:They will be removed from their place if they are in error. No need to worry about such things.boo wrote:The question arises in my mind as Plato asked who guards the guardians ?

The logs show the name of the web site and the names of the files. It's not hard to determine what is being viewed without actually viewing it. Of course, the hard part is knowing whether they've managed to clear the logs and the image cache.Lizzy60 wrote:... Regardless, it's still going to be uncomfortable searching when you know there's a potential risk of becoming "contaminated." The brethren are facing an uphill battle. The Lord has given us this wonderful technology for good, and too many of us are failing miserably with it. :ymsigh:

Well the mantel of authority has followed a clear order of delegation - correct?caddis wrote:I wonder if the regular missionaries are considered apostates if they "question" their Zone Leaders too much.
Father > Son > President > 12 > Mission President > Zone Leader > Regular Missionary
Dang, that is really close to the prophet. I wonder where the line is where someone could question without being an apostate. I think a lot would say:
Father > Son > President > 12 > Mission President > [here is the point it MIGHT be acceptable to question] Zone Leader > Regular Missionary
I think it is more like:
Father > Son > [here] President > 12 > Mission President > Zone Leader > Regular Missionary

That's Apostate! :p However I agree with you completely. I'm not sure what that would make me then.I think it is more like:
Father > Son > [here] President > 12 > Mission President > Zone Leader > Regular Missionary

There were missionaries in my mission with porn too. 07-09. NorthEast
No surprise. They didn't even have ipads or electronics. At least weren't allowed to. They had them anyways.

I was wondering if the same person who told him about the ipads also told him about Spencer's car, but suprisingly, 'Elias returns' claims to actually know 'spencer' so he is the source for that questionable tidbit.durangout wrote:This reminds me of the time you said Spencer was a Church employee, had recieved a company car from The Church and that it was The car of his vision.

Hmmmm..........
Regarding the ipads, don't they have software that you can put on a device which will tell you all the history so you can track them? Church leaders are not stupid or naive. I would assume that if they give them ipads, they make sure they know how they are being used and can check up to make sure they are not being used to access inappropriate content.
I'm skeptical of his 'friend of a friend' heresay, and will only give it credence if I see ipads pulled from missionaries in general.
