Bob Lazar Says the FBI Raided Him to Seize Area 51's Alien Fuel. The Truth Is Weirder
New documents obtained by Motherboard show why the FBI raided the Area 51 insider's scientific supply company.

On May 24, 1989, in a live interview with investigative reporter George Knapp on KLAS-Las Vegas, Robert “Bob” Lazar took the first steps toward becoming one of the most influential (and controversial) figures in all of UFO lore.
Concealing his identity and using the pseudonym “Dennis,” Lazar said that deep within an unconfirmed section of Area 51 called “S4,” he’d once worked on recovered extraterrestrial spacecraft for the US government

The “Melissa Worm” through the eyes of the FBI
A look back at the FBI investigative files on new millenium-era malware
Written by Emily Crose
Edited by Beryl Lipton
The year was 1999. Talk of the Y2K crisis was driving technological discussion throughout the United States, and fears that computers would suddenly stop working when clocks hit midnight of the year 2000 stoked fears of the technology we had all come to rely on so heavily. As companies began to consider what they needed to do to ensure continuity into the new millennium, a less abstract threat began to spread itself across the early Internet. It’s name was “Melissa”.
Materials released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in response to a Freedom of Information Act request reveal a level of maturity in its investigation that they don’t consistently demonstrate in investigations of other crimes of similar nature. They also contain some entertaining stories provided by individuals who were investigated in pursuit of this worm, as well as the humanity—not always apparent in other contexts—of the FBI’s investigation.
On an FD-71 form, the FBI’s standard complaint form, dated March 29, 1999 at 6:00 p.m., the FBI described a telephone call from a man (identity withheld) with concerns that his AOL account had been hacked. The man claimed that he had been contacted by two reporters, one from Wired and another from the Seattle Times, who advised him the “Melissa” virus appeared to have originated from his AOL acco

Panel recalls FBI, AJC roles in case of Richard Jewell, Olympics bombing hero turned suspect
Posted by John Ruch | Nov 13, 2019
One of the darkest moments in Atlanta’s history, the 1996 Summer Olympics bombing, grew darker still when the FBI and major media wrongly fingered heroic security guard Richard Jewell as the bomber. A Nov. 12 panel discussion at the Atlanta History Center about “The Suspect,” a new book telling Jewell’s story, was a historic moment in itself, gathering significant figures from the case onstage and in the audience.
Drawing a crowd of hundreds, the event was partly a preemptive strike on how Atlanta may be portrayed in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming movie about Jewell, partly a lecture on history and Jewell’s life, and partly an emotional reflection on an investigation gone astray while the real bomber escaped to continue his crimes. Jewell died at age 44 in 2007.

Two Florida Police Agencies Caught on Video Entering Homes without warrant
One cop was wearing a ski mask when he slapped the phone out of the hands of a man recording.
Twice in one week, videos surfaced showing South Florida cops from two different agencies entering homes without search warrants or owner consent in search of suspects who did not live in the homes.
The first video shows a group of Broward County sheriff's deputies entering the home of Johnny Emmanuel while he was at work in search of his 25-year-old son who does not live at the home.
Emmanuel said he received a text message from his home security system on August 19 showing deputies entering his home from a side door that nobody ever uses.
Emmanuel's son is accused of assaulting a cop which is the excuse they will likely use to explain their disregard for the Constitution, as if that makes any difference.
Had it not been for his security video system, Emmanuel would have never known they had entered his home because they never bothered contacting him, much less served him a warrant.
According to the Miami New Times, which obtained the video:
Emmanuel says the cops left no note they'd been there, let alone copies of a search warrant. He says nobody called him to say cops had been there either. If it weren't for the security system, he says, he never would've known BSO deputies had entered his home and snooped around.
"I have two young children," he says. "Thank God they weren't home — they'd be traumatized for life. Someone could have been shot."
As it turns out, video and documents obtained by New Times show BSO had obtained what's known as a capias warrant to look for Emmanuel's 25-year-old son, Eric Reese, who at the time was wanted on charges of aggravated assault on an officer and fleeing arrest. But Reese did not live at Emmanuel's home. And, more important, a capias warrant — essentially an arrest warrant — in most cases does not allow officers to enter a home without the resident's consent. Officers typically need to have "reasonable suspicion" a suspect is inside a residence before they can bust in legally. Emmanuel doesn't believe the cops did.
BSO spokespeople did not immediately respond to a message from New Times yesterday. (After this story was published, the department said that its spokespeople were not in-office Monday in order to observe Veterans Day.) But Emmanuel says he's freaked out — even if the cops had a reasonable right to break into his house (which he doesn't believe they did), he's floored no one ever informed him they'd entered his house.
The second video was posted to Facebook Thursday showing an Opa-Locka police officer wearing a ski mask entering a man's home with his gun pointed. The man recording tells the cop he is not welcome in the home. The cop responds by slapping the phone out of his hands.

According to the Miami Herald:
Cellphone video footage of an Opa-locka police officer inside an apartment during the search for a suspected gunman has landed the cop in potential hot water and caused the police chief to make an unusual announcement.
In a rare press release, Opa-locka Police Chief James Dobson released the address of the Facebook link to the video and said the incident is being investigated internally by his department.
Dobson said the officer, who hasn’t been named, was searching last week for a man with a handgun who was suspected of “threatening” and demanding money from people in an apartment complex at 13875 NW 22nd Ave. Someone had called Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers and given a description of the suspect, Dobson said.
“The Opa-locka police department can not comment on the exact facts of an active investigation, but it takes any and all allegations of misconduct very seriously,” Dobson said. “Any allegation of police misconduct will be investigated immediately.”
Opa-Locka has long been one of

Pennsylvania County’s Election Day Nightmare Underscores Voting Machine Concerns
November 30, 2019 11:48 am ENM NEWS 30 Comments

Vote totals in a Northampton County judge’s race showed one candidate, Abe Kassis, a Democrat, had just 164 votes out of 55,000 ballots across more than 100 precincts. Some machines reported zero votes for him. In a county with the ability to vote for a straight-party ticket, one candidate’s zero votes was a near statistical impossibility. Something had gone quite wrong.
Lee Snover, the chairwoman of the county Republicans, said her anxiety began to pick up at 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 5. She had trouble getting someone from the election office on the phone. When she eventually got through, she said: “I’m coming down there and you better let me in.”
With clearly faulty results in at least the judge’s election, officials began counting the paper backup ballots generated by the same machines. The paper ballots showed Mr. Kassis winning narrowly, 26,142 to 25,137, over his opponent, the Republican Victor Scomillio.

“People were questioning, and even I questioned, that if some of the numbers are wrong, how do we know that there aren’t mistakes with anything else?” said Matthew Munsey, the chairman of the Northampton County Democrats, who, along with Ms. Snover, was among the observers as county officials worked through the night to count the paper ballots by hand.
The snafu in Northampton County did not just expose flaws in both the election machine testing and procurement process. It also highlighted the fears, frustrations and mistrust over election security that many voters are feeling ahead of the 2020 presidential contest, given how faith in American elections has never been more fragile. The problematic machines were also used in Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs — areas of Pennsylvania that could prove decisive next year in one of the most critical presidential swing states in the country.

In an era where some candidates and incumbents try to challenge or discredit a close loss by questioning the system, either with unfounded allegations of voter fraud or claims of a “rigged” election, the proper functioning and security of election machines have never been more crucial.
“There are concerns for 2020,” Ms. Snover said, questioning whether the paper ballots generated by the same machine that had a digital error could be trusted. “Nothing went right on Election Day. Everything went wrong. That’s a problem.”

Election Day here had been marred by complaints of long lines, glitch-prone touch screens and frustrated poll workers. Voters across the county said the experience further eroded their already shaken confidence in the election process.
“It made me sad because with everything that’s going on, you kind of worry about: Was something tampered with, or was it just a mistake,” said Michelle Broadhecker, 48, of Easton, who said her anxiety about elections began after 2016. “There’s just too much going on that you worry about those things. And you don’t want the wrong people in the wrong places.”
Though there has been no conclusive study as to what caused the machines to malfunction, as the machines are locked away for 20 days after an election according to state law, the prevailing theory is that the touch screens were plagued by a bug in the software. A senior intelligence official who focuses on election security said there were no visible signs of outside meddling by any foreign actors.
County officials who led the purchase of the machines have argued that the system actually functioned as it should: The paper ballot backup process worked. The touch screens failed, but the backups had the correct vote, so while it was inconvenient, it proved the necessity of a paper backup.

“We also need to focus on the outcome, which is that voter-verified paper ballots provided fair, accurate and legal election results, as indicated by the county’s official results reporting and successful postelection risk-limiting audit,” said Katina Granger, a spokeswoman for Election Systems & Software, the manufacturer of the machines. “The election was legal and fair.”

But for others, it underscored the fractured system for selecting voting systems. Major decisions for testing, purchasing and operating complex machines are often left to county and city officials. Federal testing standards for election machines haven’t been updated since 2005, when a large percentage of the machines were not digital.

“Not only is that a decade before the current cybersecurity threats to our elections, it is two years before the first iPhone,” said Kevin Skoglund, a senior technical adviser for the National Election Defense Coalition, a nonpartisan group that focuses on election security issues. “There is a newer 2015 standard, but the Election Assistance Commission lets voting system vendors choose which one to use.”
The machines that broke in Northampton County are called the ExpressVoteXL and are made by Election Systems & Software, a major manufacturer of election machines used across the country. The ExpressVoteXL is among their newest and most high-end machines, a luxury “one-stop” voting system that combines a 32-inch touch screen and a paper ballot printer.
To initiate a vote, a voter places a blank ballot-shaped piece of paper in the machine, makes their selections on the screen, and then presses the word “vote.” The machine prints a ballot that is protected under a plate of glass for the voter to review. The voter then clicks “cast” on the screen, the digital votes are recorded on a USB and the backup ballot is transmitted to a sealed canister in the back of the machine.
The machines began arriving in the county in August, having gone through a federal and state certification process. The only remaining testing to be done was what officials called a “logic and accuracy test,” which is a quick dry run of roughly 20 dummy ballots. But the ExpressVoteXL has an auto-test function in which the machines can simulate a full digital test, a feature that election security experts say is ill-advised.
“It doesn’t test if the touch screen or the scanner work. It doesn’t even cast votes for everyone on the ballot,” Mr. Skoglund said. “It is especially concerning that it can send made-up votes to the vote counting software without needing a real ballot. Fake ballots are a feature no voting machine should have.”
The automatic tests in Northampton proved problematic, and did not even cast a test vote for every candidate, according to test receipts shown to The New York Times. But the machines were still rolled out on Election Day.

And instantly, there were problems.
“I walked into my booth, and I knew that I was going to vote straight Democratic and I’m voting that way until we get some balance back into the government, but when I hit straight Democratic, straight Republican is what registered,” said Angela Anderson, 55, of Forks Township, who said that many of her neighbors shared similar stories. “I kind of panicked for a second. But thankfully it easily reset, and I reset my system, and that time it registered Democratic.”

Deb Hunter, a member of the county election commission, said they were actually lucky that the county judge election went so poorly because that made the problem obvious.
“What would have happened if there was a glitch there that got at a 10 percent or 20 percent undercount?” she said. “That worries me. That worries me going forward.”
Ms. Granger noted that there are nearly 6,300 ExpressVoteXL voting machines in use across the country, and none had experienced similar counting problems to those in Northampton County.
It was the way the machines were selected by Philadelphia elected officials that drew the most scrutiny over the last year. Since 2013, E.S.&S. had been courting the two city commissioners who were responsible for choosing the next voting machine, according to a report from the city comptroller.
The lobbying firm for E.S.&S. had donated $1,000 in 2013 to the campaign of Al Schmidt, one of the city commissioners, and again to a group supporting his re-election effort in 2018. They also spent more than $27,000 in direct lobbying of Mr. Schmidt.
Mr. Schmidt made a visit to only one company’s headquarters: E.S.&S.
In total, E.S.&S. spent more than $425,000 in lobbying expenses related to the City of Philadelphia.

Emails obtained by the city comptroller also found that E.S.&S. had influenced the writing of the city commissioners’ $22 million

Jason Chaffetz: FBI deep state clear – will FISA report finally lead to action?

Following a series of four damning inspector general reports over the last two years, there is little doubt the senior leadership of the Obama-era FBI was weaponized in the service of the Democratic Party. But as America awaits what many expect to be the most damning investigation of all, it's fair to ask what has been done to rein in our rogue FBI.
The report on FISA abuse set for release on Dec. 9 is expected to show how the FBI used the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to spy on American citizens affiliated with the Trump campaign in 2016. As damning as such a conclusion would be, it will only be the latest in a series of explosive revelations from the Department of Justice Inspector General (IG) Michael Horowitz, some of which got muted coverage from the mainstream press. Advance leaks suggest the upcoming report will, at a minimum, show an FBI lawyer illegally altered documents to justify a FISA application.

A Brilliant Essay by Edgar F. Tatro: “A Cozy Little Town Called Dallas”
august 20, 2019 by lbjthemasterofdeceit

ED’S ESSAY WAS PUBLISHED AS THE FOREWORD TO RICHARD BARTHOLOMEW’S EXCELLENT BOOK “THE DEEP STATE IN THE HEART OF TEXAS” WHICH I RECOMMEND TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN FURTHER EXPLORING THE “TEXAS AXIS” OF THE JFK ASSASSINATION.

Within the essay, Ed explains how he was invited to write this piece by Richard Bartholomew to set the stage for Richard’s intensive examination of the numerous assassination-related events that transpired within Texas before, during and after November 22, 1963. Ed’s narrative exposes a number of them as well, in the context of how they were done independently of any direct involvement of the CIA: These events, all conducted under the aegis of what Ed calls the “Texas Axis” — including members of the Dallas Citizen Council, the millionaire oil men throughout Texas, the Dallas Police Department, Lyndon Johnson and his aides and cronies — were crucial to the success of the mission being conducted with the assistance of the CIA, yet were not among the tasks under their control.
Mr. Tatro listed twenty specific examples of critically-important parts to the “executive action” mission, tasks that the “CIA DID NOT” have anything to do with, the first two of which were:

This essay — which can (as of this date) be read in full at the Amazon page for Bartholomew’s book (click here then “Look Inside” to scroll down for Ed’s Foreword) — like the book itself, is a very thoughtful, and thought-provoking, look at the overall scope of the plot to assassinate the President and then to cover it up, ensuring the success of the 1963 coup d’état. To this date, I know of no one who has effectively rebutted his argument, and doubt that anyone could possibly do that if they tried.

FRANCES CROWE
In Memoriam: March 15, 1919 - August 27, 2019

Frances was a stellar light in western Massachusetts, inspiring thousands of people to become social justice and peace activists.

I feel very honored and personally inspired to have known Frances for over 40 years.

I first met Frances when I was 18 as a college student at Hampshire College in 1976.  Within a month of arriving in the Pioneer Valley, I was in Frances’ car driving to a peace demonstration in Washington, DC.

In May 1977, I filmed my first interview with Frances at the mass civil disobedience protest on the construction site of a nuclear reactor in Seabrook, New Hampshire, for my first documentary, SEABROOK 1977. (See video excerpt below)

Frances Crowe was featured prominently in my latest documentary, POWER STRUGGLE, which chronicles the successful grassroots citizens’ effort to close the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vermont. (See video excerpts below)

In March 2019, when Frances celebrated her 100th birthday, she was joined by hundreds of people marching through the streets of Northampton, MA. I made a short film about this joyous day, FRANCES TURNS 100. (See video below)

On August 29, Amy Goodman, host of DEMOCRACY NOW, a global daily television and radio news program, featured an in-depth tribute to Frances, which featured extensive scenes of Frances protesting at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant from POWER STRUGGLE, along with a 2005 interview with Frances conducted by Amy. It was a very moving tribute. (See video below)

Later this fall, I will be posting on this page a video of a discussion panel that I moderated with Frances, along with Marcia Gagliardi and Hattie Nestel of the Shut It Down Affinity Group, talking about their experiences as activists in the Vermont Yankee struggle. This took place at the Northampton Center For The Arts in June 2019.

For more information on Frances’ long life of activism about a diversity of issues, see the newspaper tributes below.

If I hear of an official website memorial to Frances, I will post a link here.

As Frances says about her life of activism in POWER STRUGGLE, “You can't do it alone. You need community to do this, so that you can support one another and move ahead together.”

While Frances will be sorely missed, her legacy of activism lives on in the countless people she inspired to join movements for grassroots social change.

In particular, I feel heartened that Frances’ activism — and those of other activists from Vermont and western Massachusetts who participated in the struggle to close down the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor — will continue to inspire people who see POWER STRUGGLE, as this film chronicles a rare victory of grassroots activists who actually won.

Metaphysical Connection 96: JFK and The Deep State in the Heart of Texas

Posted by Eric Renderking Fisk | November 17th, 2018
Author Richard Bartholomew visits us with some new revelations about the Kennedy Assassination Conspiracy and The infamous Zappruder Film.
About The Book
The Deep State in the Heart of Texas: The Texas Connections to the Kennedy Assassination - Written by Richard Bartholomew and featuring a foreword by Edgar Tatro of THE MEN WHO KILLED KENNEDY, this book examines many of underlying connections in Texas to the assassination on 11/22/1963. Not a simple Lyndon Johnson-did-it book, this is rather a potent analysis of the forces that continue to enable the kind of power politics existent even to the present day.

Richard Bartholomew, a political cartoonist by trade, is a co-founder and director of the Center for Deep Political Research. CDPR boasts many of the best researchers and historians in the field on its Board of Advisors, including Peter Dale Scott, Colleen Rowley, Cynthia McKinney, and William Davy. Bartholomew's talent, education, training, and professional experience have been primarily in the visual arts, resulting in his career as an award-winning graphic designer, illustrator and editorial cartoonist.

His research of the JFK assassination includes his discovery of a 1959 Rambler station wagon possibly used in the conspiracy; a study co-authored with Walter F. Graf involving a rifle clip that contaminates the ballistic evidence; a chronological reconstruction and placement of missing movements edited out of the Zapruder film; an in-depth interview of Erwin Schwartz, with author Noel Twyman, regarding Mr. Schwartz's and Mr. Zapruder's early chain of possession of Zapruder's film; and work for author Barr McClellan resulting in Bartholomew's monograph establishing the methods by which the FBI and the Warren Commission concealed and obfuscated latent fingerprints from the alleged sniper's nest.

America’s greatest untold story: the United States’ rise to world dominance under the guile of Allen Welsh Dulles, the longest-serving director of the CIA. Drawing on revelatory new materials—including newly discovered U.S. government documents, U.S. and European intelligence sources, the personal correspondence and journals of Allen Dulles’s wife and mistress, and exclusive interviews with the children of prominent CIA officials—Talbot reveals the underside of one of America’s most powerful and influential figures."

OJ Watchdog Criticizes FBI’s Handling of U.S.-Based Violent Extremists

The Justice Department’s inspector general criticized the FBI’s handling of U.S.-based extremists who successfully carried out attacks against Americans after the bureau investigated them.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report identified homegrown violent extremists (HVE) who continued to act violently after the FBI prematurely closed their cases.
“Since September 11, 2001, HVEs have carried out over 20 attacks in the United States, some of which occurred after the FBI closed a counterterrorism investigation or assessment on the individual,” the report said.

This is the sixth of a periodic series on the early primaries and caucuses. The other pieces can be found here.

The fix on Super Tuesday in the presidential election was a clubhouse deal in which the elders of the Democratic Party, led by Barack Obama, shook down the primary system to teach Bernie Sanders a civics lesson, which is that the party ideals must remain convertible into gold or silver.
I know that, at least on paper, the current Democratic Party is the heir of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackso

Infectivity, JHU stats and mortality estimates

Johns Hopkins is keeping track of COVID-19 cases internationally, in real time, here.

There have been 51,171 recovered cases and 3,254 deceased, for a 6% mortality rate.  This number should drop, I hope considerably, as we begin to identify more asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic cases.

One hopeful piece of information is that spread has been mostly within families...suggesting infection requires a large inoculum size (a large number of viral particles) and may therefore be considerably less contagious for those with only casual contact with cases.  We hope.

Update 3/5/20:  Spread might be high within families because they have genetic markers in common that either promote infection or lead to more severe infection.

District Attorney Chesa Boudin on His Incarcerated Father and the Threat of the Coronavirus in Prisons

By Jennifer Gonnerman
March 26, 2020

LYRICS: Bob Dylan Releases 17-Minute Song About JFK Assassination

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_cont ... e=emb_logo

Twas a dark day in Dallas, November '63
A day that will live on in infamy
President Kennedy was a-ridin’ high
Good day to be livin' and a good day to die
Being led to the slaughter like a sacrificial lamb
He said, "Wait a minute, boys, you know who I am?"
"Of course we do. We know who you are."
Then they blew off his head while he was still in the car
Shot down like a dog in broad daylight
Was a matter of timing and the timing was right
You got unpaid debts; we've come to collect
We're gonna kill you with hatred; without any respect
We'll mock you and shock you and we'll put it in your face
We've already got someone here to take your place

The day they blew out the brains of the king
Thousands were watching; no one saw a thing
It happened so quickly, so quick, by surprise
Right there in front of everyone's eyes
Greatest magic trick ever under the sun
Perfectly executed, skillfully done
Wolfman, oh wolfman, oh wolfman howl
Rub-a-dub-dub, it's a murder most foul

Hush, little children. You'll understand
The Beatles are comin'; they're gonna hold your hand
Slide down the banister, go get your coat
Ferry 'cross the Mersey and go for the throat
There's three bums comin' all dressed in rags
Pick up the pieces and lower the flags
I'm going to Woodstock; it's the Aquarian Age
Then I'll go to Altamont and sit near the stage
Put your head out the window; let the good times roll
There's a party going on behind the Grassy Knoll

Stack up the bricks, pour the cement
Don't say Dallas don't love you, Mr. President
Put your foot in the tank and step on the gas
Try to make it to the triple underpass
Blackface singer, whiteface clown
Better not show your faces after the sun goes down
Up in the red light district, they've got cop on the beat
Living in a nightmare on Elm Street

When you're down in Deep Ellum, put your money in your shoe
Don't ask what your country can do for you
Cash on the ballot, money to burn
Dealey Plaza, make left-hand turn
I'm going down to the crossroads; gonna flag a ride
The place where faith, hope, and charity died
Shoot him while he runs, boy. Shoot him while you can
See if you can shoot the invisible man
Goodbye, Charlie. Goodbye, Uncle Sam
Frankly, Miss Scarlett, I don't give a damn

What is the truth, and where did it go?
Ask Oswald and Ruby; they oughta know
"Shut your mouth," said the wise old owl
Business is business, and it's a murder most foul

Tommy, can you hear me? I'm the Acid Queen
I'm riding in a long, black limousine
Riding in the backseat next to my wife
Heading straight on in to the afterlife
I'm leaning to the left; got my head in her lap
Hold on, I've been led into some kind of a trap
Where we ask no quarter, and no quarter do we give
We're right down the street from the street where you live
They mutilated his body, and they took out his brain
What more could they do? They piled on the pain
But his soul's not there where it was supposed to be at
For the last fifty years they've been searchin' for that

Freedom, oh freedom. Freedom cover me
I hate to tell you, mister, but only dead men are free
Send me some lovin'; tell me no lies
Throw the gun in the gutter and walk on by
Wake up, little Susie; let's go for a drive
Cross the Trinity River; let's keep hope alive
Turn the radio on; don't touch the dials
Parkland hospital, only six more miles

You got

Washington brings NARCO-TERRORISM charges against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
26 Mar, 2020 15:13 / Updated 12 minutes ago

I know how chaotic the world is right now. But

especially during times of crisis like the one we’re facing now in the novel coronavirus pandemic, we have to be particularly vigilant to ensure that our rights are prioritized and protected from potential government power grabs and that the most vulnerable in our communities aren’t being exploited in the name of national security and public health. To that end, during this crisis Defending Rights & Dissent will maintain its longtime fidelity to defend the Bill of Rights for everyone and protect political expression in America.
The US, along with the rest of the world, is in the midst of a deadly pandemic. As a result, state and local governments are taking extraordinary measures to prevent the community spread of COVID-19. Defending Rights & Dissent has been working with community organizations to make sure necessary public health precautions don’t inadvertently lead to increased over-policing. We’ve prepared resources that can be found here to help.
This can present challenging questions for civil libertarians and those who are concerned about over-policing. Stay-at-home orders, in the midst of a pandemic are a necessary public health measure. But how do we make sure such orders don’t infringe on civil liberties or lead to increased policing?
What is DRAD doing?
When Defending Rights & Dissent and local community groups in Washington, DC were faced with these issues, we came up with some broad principles for how to enact a stay-at-home order based on principles of decarceration. They include:
• If public health warrants “stay-at-home” orders, as it has in other cities and states across the country, such an order should not increase police-general public encounters.
• While it is perfectly reasonable that such an order be enforced against businesses and similar entities that endanger the public by defying it, it should not create penalties for individuals.
• Stay-at-home orders and social distancing must apply to the police, as well.
• A moratorium on arrests for low-risk offenses must be included in the order.
• Decarceration is now a public health imperative. In addition to suspending non-emergency matters, the city should consider dismissing all nonviolent cases and lower-level violent cases with no history of violence.
We recently circulated a community sign-on letter making these demands known to DC government officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser (you can read the letter here). While these principles were meant to influence a potential stay-at-home order in DC (DC will be contacting residents ‪this evening‬, urging them to stay at home), they are broadly applicable. If you or community groups you are part of are concerned about how a stay at order could impact police-community encounters, these principles could help guide your advocacy. Defending Rights & Dissent has prepared sample language that can be found here.
What Can I Do?
Just because we’re facing a crisis doesn’t mean attempts to chip away at our civil liberties have subsided. Last week, it was reported that Trump’s Attorney General William Barr is seeking expansive new police powers in the wake of the coronavirus crisis - including the ability to detain individuals indefinitely without due process.
We need your voice today! We cannot allow the Trump administration to use a public health crisis to undermine our rights. During a time when we should be coming together to address a common enemy, William Barr is choosing to use it as an opportunity to continue his assault on our constitutional rights. Congress needs to hear from YOU.
Take Action!
I know that these are trying times. But together, we can rise to this unique moment. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay vigilant.

In Solidarity,
Su

Fox News host slammed for complaining that women ‘can’t get their nails done’ amid coronavirus

By JAMI GANZ

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |
MAR 26, 2020 | 2:15 PM

http://anthraxvaccine.blogspot.com/2020 ... virus.html

Thursday, March 26, 2020
There are many ways the novel coronavirus may have come about/ Nass

“If someone were seeking to engineer a new coronavirus as a pathogen, they would have constructed it from the backbone of a virus known to cause illness,” the report said. “But the scientists found that the SARS-CoV-2 backbone differed substantially from those of already known coronaviruses and mostly resembled related viruses found in bats and pangolins.”—USAT

Well, yes, that is surely one relatively easy way to create a pathogen:  string together known bits of DNA or RNA to create new organisms with virulence factors from known building blocks.  But it is also relatively easy to detect the human hand in this type of chimera.  And because plausible deniability is more important to such programs than creating a new pathogen, I doubt that is the path that would have been followed by a modern biowarfare lab.

So as not to encourage the development of biowarfare pathogens, I will only briefly mention some of the old techniques for creating them, which shoot holes into the Nature Medicine hypothesis of natural origin.

1.  China has unique bats.  So do other countries.  Unique bats likely harbor unique viruses.  Bits of these viruses can be strung together, while no outside parties are aware that these particular RNA threads exist in nature.
2.  You take an already virulent RNA virus, subject it to high rates of mutation via chemical or radiological exposure, and test the viruses that survive for the acquisition of new virulence characteristics.
3.  You simply passage the virus through tens, hundreds or thousands of lab animals and test the results for acquisition of new virulence characteristics.
4.  You mix different viruses together with different virulence characteristics, allow them to grow together, and seek recombinants that have obtained a new mix of virulence factors.

All these possibilities result in viruses that are hard to pin on lab production.  I dare the Nature Medicine scientists to so easily dismiss these scenarios.

Still, I doubt that any national program would deliberately release this coronavirus onto the people of the earth, because it is so hard to control.  Our bio-weaponeers require that their creations be controllable, at all costs.  An accidental release of a novel virus, which has happened frequently at national bio-labs worldwide, is the strongest hypothesis.  Especially when we are told this coronavirus has a slow rate of mutation.  In that case, why was something more homologous to it never seen before in nature?

We should not forget that all the august scientists and bodies who have claimed this event is entirely natural when interviewed by USAToday have vested interests:  their research could be shut down as a result of worldwide revulsion for what has occurred.

The legislation would create a new Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission, a nine-member group that would serve as the state’s primary civil enforcement agency, with the power to certify officers for the first time in state history, oversee investigations into officer misconduct, and revoke an officers’ license for certain misconduct.
The so-called POST commission could strip an officer’s certification if he or she is convicted of a felony, “knowingly” files a police report with false information, or uses deadly excessive force, among dozens of examples of misconduct laid out in the legislation.

In trove of officer misconduct records, Maine sheriffs hide the worst offenses
by Josh Keefe

The three corrections officers were punished for not notifying the medical department or logging that an unnamed inmate wanted medical attention. Two of them were disciplined for not checking on the inmate, and for making no attempt to clean the feces off the cell door window despite its presence “making it impossible to see inside,” according to the records. One of the officers was also disciplined for writing that he checked the cells every 15 minutes when he had not.
But those records failed to mention Kitchin — or his death.
Anyone reading the records without prior knowledge of what happened to Kitchin would have no way to know that the discipline handed down to the three officers had anything to do with a man dying in his cell while begging for medical attention.

The FBI's Man Inside the Klan
The FBI was ruthless in its pursuit of civil rights activists. At the same time, the Ku Klux Klan was engaged in a reign of terror. How did the FBI's attitude towards those fighting nonviolently for racial justice compare to its attitude towards those who wished to violently stop them?
In this episode, we explore the career of the FBI's controversial Klan informant Gary Rowe. To explore this, we talk to Mary Stanton a historian of social justice movements in the South and biographer of Liuzzo.

Jeffrey S. Sallet Named FBI Associate Deputy Director
Director Christopher Wray has named Jeffrey S. Sallet as the associate deputy director of the FBI. Mr. Sallet oversees all FBI personnel, budget, administration, and infrastructure, as well as the inspections and insider threat programs. He most recently served as the executive assistant director of the Human Resources Branch.
Mr. Sallet started his FBI career as a special agent in 1997 in the New York Field Office, investigating crimes across several areas. During the 9/11 investigation, he was responsible for identifying how the attacks were funded and for tracking al Qaeda’s financial assets.
In 2005, Mr. Sallet transferred to the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to manage La Cosa Nostra investigations in the northeastern United States. In 2007, he moved to the Providence Resident Agency in Rhode Island. The next year, he was promoted to supervisory senior resident agent, in charge of all counterterrorism, public corruption, civil rights, government fraud, and organized crime investigations in Rhode Island.
Mr. Sallet was promoted again in 2012, to an assistant special agent in charge in the Boston Field Office, overseeing white-collar crime, public corruption, health care fraud, and civil rights matters. He also led the coordinated law enforcement response and investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013.
Mr. Sallet was named chief of the Public Corruption/Civil Rights Section in the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters in 2014. He was promoted to special agent in charge of the New Orleans Field Office in 2015 and moved to lead the Chicago office in 2017. He was promoted to associate executive assistant director of the Finance and Facilities Division in 2019.

WHO admitted last year that masks and social distancing were designed to stop transmission from people with SYMPTOMS! There is no evidence they do anything to control the pandemic when used by asymptomatic people

http://www.emro.who.int/health-topics/c ... cases.html
"11 June 2020 - Global research on COVID-19 continues to be conducted, including how the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted. Current evidence suggests that most transmission occurs from symptomatic people through close contact with others. Accordingly, most recommendations by WHO on personal protective measures (such as use of masks and physical distancing) are based on controlling transmission from symptomatic patients, including patients with mild symptoms who are not easy to identify early on.

Available evidence from contact tracing reported by countries suggests that asymptomatically infected individuals are much less likely to transmit the virus than those who develop symptoms. A subset of studies and data shared by some countries on detailed cluster investigations and contact tracing activities have reported that asymptomatically-infected individuals are much less likely to transmit the virus than those who develop symptoms.

Comprehensive studies on transmission from asymptomatic patients are difficult to conduct, as they require testing of large population cohorts and more data are needed to better understand and quantified the transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2. WHO is working with countries around the world, and global researchers, to gain better evidence-based understanding of the disease as a whole, including the role of asymptomatic patients in the transmission of the virus."

Citizen's Petition to the FDA asking it to revoke all Covid vaccine authorizations

The document is quite long, but has several dozen important nuggets of information about the Covid vaccines, and improper actions FDA has taken, especially with regard to meeting the standards for an EUA.
I am finding it hard to write about a document that means a lot to me.  It may provide a stepping stone to clarity about many issues around Covid, as well as the vaccines, the falsehoods that have been promulgated by federal agencies, and it may save us from the tyranny of forced injections containing what Moderna's Chief Medical Officer Tal Zaks called, "the software of life."
The FDA is obliged to respond to all the points we have made.
Below is a Defender article about the Petition.  And here is the Petition itself.  You must first download it before you can read it.  On the same page, there is a blue button for comments.  We hope to garner as many comments as possible.  The number (and quality) of comments can make a huge difference in terms of the actions FDA takes.  Please, at least give the document a glance.
Amid growing safety concerns, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Dr. Meryl Nass, on behalf of Children’s Health Defense (CHD), filed a Citizen Petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asking the agency to immediately revoke the Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) for COVID vaccines and to refrain from licensing them.j

Green Zones or Concentration Camps? CDC has a plan to stick the "high risk" in special camps, which will most likely enhance transmission of Covid

For people who still think that public health dictates are intended for our benefit, will you still think so when the public health police decide to remove granny from her home to a high risk camp, where latrines will be provided?  And hopefully food and medical care, all based on the refugee model? This was updated a year ago, so it has probably changed in the interim.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nc ... arian.html
The purpose of this document is to highlight potential implementation challenges of the shielding approach from CDC’s perspective and guide thinking around implementation in the absence of empirical data. Considerations are based on current evidence known about the transmission and severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and may need to be revised as more information becomes available. Please check the CDC website periodically for updates.

It’s Copyright Week 2022: Ten Years Later, How Has SOPA/PIPA Shaped Online Copyright Enforcement?
Ten years ago, a diverse coalition of internet users, non profit groups, and internet companies defeated the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), bills that would have forced internet companies to blacklist and block websites accused of hosting copyright-infringing content. These bills would have made censorship very easy, all in the name of copyright enforcement. This collective action showed the world that the word of a few major companies that control film, music, and television can’t control internet policy for their own good. We celebrate Copyright Week every year on the anniversary of the internet blackout that finally got the message across: Team Internet will always stand up for itself.
VICTORY: Google Releases “disable 2g” Feature for New Android Smartphones
Last year Google quietly pushed a new feature to its Android operating system allowing users to optionally disable 2G at the modem level in their phones. This is a fantastic feature that will provide some protection from cell site simulators, an invasive police surveillance technology employed throughout the country. We applaud Google for implementing this much needed feature. Now Apple needs to implement this feature as well, for the safety of their customers

Covid-19 vaccines and treatments: we must have raw data, now/ BMJ

Three BMJ editors wrote a very strong editorial about the need to access the data on COVID vaccines, which have been kept from us. Here is an excerpt:

Pfizer’s pivotal covid vaccine trial was funded by the company and designed, run, analysed, and authored by Pfizer employees. The company and the contract research organisations that carried out the trial hold all the data.17 And Pfizer has indicated that it will not begin entertaining requests for trial data until May 2025, 24 months after the primary study completion date, which is listed on ClinicalTrials.gov as 15 May 2023 (NCT04368728).
The lack of access to data is consistent across vaccine manufacturers.16 Moderna says data “may be available … with publication of the final study results in 2022.”18 Datasets will be available “upon request and subject to review once the trial is complete,” which has an estimated primary completion date of 27 October 2022 (NCT04470427).
As of 31 December 2021, AstraZeneca may be ready to entertain requests for data from several of its large phase III trials.19 But actually obtaining data could be slow going. As its website explains, “timelines vary per request and can take up to a year upon full submission of the request.”20
Underlying data for covid-19 therapeutics are similarly hard to find. Published reports of Regeneron’s phase III trial of its monoclonal antibody therapy REGEN-COV flatly state that participant level data will not be made available to others.21 Should the drug be approved (and not just emergency authorised), sharing “will be considered.” For remdesivir, the US National Institutes of Health, which funded the trial, created a new portal to share data (https://accessclinicaldata.niaid.nih.gov/), but the dataset on offer is limited. An accompanying document explains: “The longitudinal data set only contains a small subset of the protocol and statistical analysis plan objectives.”
We are left with publications but no access to the underlying data on reasonable request. This is worrying for trial participants, researchers, clinicians, journal editors, policy makers, and the public...

I wrote the following 'rapid response' yesterday.  Surprisingly, it was not posted, although in years past any reasonable comment went up on the website.

The BMJ Editors are absolutely correct about the need for granular, raw data from clinical trials to inform the public regarding the true efficacy and safety of new medical products.
But considered in the context of the COVID response, the refusal of manufacturers and regulators to release accumulated data is outrageous.
1.  Almost all of these products were released to the public under emergency authorization, which requires a minimalist standard of evidence: "may be effective" [1]
2.  Because of this, in the US, the law requires that recipients be informed of the known and unknown significant benefits and risks of these products. [2]  But they are instead being given pablum such as "safe and effective," [3] despite the fact that this is a term of art reserved for licensed products, which most are not.
3.   If recipients are injured by the products, or if they do not work as claimed, the injured parties are prohibited from suing the manufacturer for damages [4]--information that is highly relevant to assessing the manufacturer's commitment to safety, yet it is not known to most of the public.
4.  These products are being given to millions of people during a short period of time, unlike the slow uptake over years of most licensed products.  Thus huge swathes of the population will have received them before adequate information about them enters the public domain.
Why is this acceptable to the regulatory agencies?
Why is it okay to keep the public in the dark, despite laws to the contrary?

The CDC Discovers Actual Public Health/ Brownstone Institute

I am really taken with Jeffrey Tucker, founder of the Brownstone Institute.  He hits the nail on the head, over and over.  In the article below, he somehow got hold of a PR memo written to help the Democratic Party deal with its terrible polling numbers by claiming victory over COVID.  The story ends as CDC changed its mask guidance the very next day.  Coincidence?  Probably not.  Beware the changing narrative.  Is misinformation the old narrative or the new one?
https://brownstone.org/articles/the-cdc ... t-in-time/
One day I’m reading an internal memo commissioned by the Democratic Party to provide advice to dealing with Covid policy. The next day I’m reading headlines about how the CDC has drastically altered its advice on how to deal with Covid.
Is there a relationship? At this point, only the hopelessly naive would think otherwise.
Let’s look at the memo produced by Impact Research. Some excerpts:

Monkeypox virus: some truth about the virus and the horribly false solution

The real truth. Some links omitted as they are included in earlier articles by me.
Monkeypox is a real virus that spreads due to skin contact, almost exclusively. If you don’t want to call it a virus, that is okay with me. It is a contagious something that spreads person to person or rarely between animals and humans. If you are not in really closely contact with someone while they are harboring a replicating virus, you won’t get it. Okay, sheets and towels and [smallpox] blankets might spread it, based on experience with smallpox.
The CDC wants to reinvent itself so we can all trust it again. This would require it to produce guidance that is helpful, not harmful, and to be truthful—which it has been unable to do so far, and I don’t think it knows how.
But I can remind the CDC how to make itself useful. Remember the AIDS epidemic, Tony and Rochelle? Aren’t you both supposed to be among America’s top experts on AIDS? That’s your specialty, right?
When NYC faced an HIV epidemic, it closed the bathhouses. It didn’t raise the status of its equity office, Rochelle. Simple, but it made a difference.
Monkeypox is a mild disease but the “pocks” are a great annoyance, because we hate seeing and dealing with them. In some areas, like the mouth and private parts, their downstream effects can be rather painful. The pocks may result in scarring.
Let’s face it: we don’t like dealing with pocks

“A policeman’s first obligation is to be responsible to the needs of the community he serves…The problem is that the atmosphere does not yet exist in which an honest police officer can act without fear of ridicule or reprisal from fellow officers. We create an atmosphere in which the honest officer fears the dishonest officer, and not the other way around.”

Queer Hoover: Sex, Lies, and Political History
CLAIRE BOND POTTER
Wesleyan University
WHAT DOES THE HISTORY OF SEX look like without evidence of sexual identities or proof that sex acts occurred? And how might an analysis of gossip, rumors, and perhaps even lies about sex help us to write politi cal history? Answers to these questions might begin with a story about J.
Edgar Hoover told by society divorcee Susan Rosenstiel, a story that was bought and paid for by tabloid journalist Anthony Summers three decades after it allegedly occurred.
In 1958 the bisexual millionaire distiller and philanthropist Lewis Solon
Rosenstiel asked Susan, his fourth wife, if--having been previously married to another bisexual man for nine vears- she had ever seen "a homosexual orgy." Although she had once surprised her sixty-eight-year-old husband in bed with his attorney, Roy Cohn, Susan told Summers that she had never before been invited to view sex between men. With her consent the couple went one day not long after this odd question to Manhattan's Plaza Hotel.
Cohn, a former aide to Senator Joseph McCarthy and a Republican power broker, met them at the door. As she and her husband entered the suite, Susan said, she recognized a third man: J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), whom she had met previously at her New York City Upper East Side townhouse. Hoover, Lewis had explained, gave him access to influential politicians; he returned these favors, in part, by paying the director's gambling debts
I would like to thank Henry Abelove, Jonathan Katz, Andrea Jagose, Matt Kuefler, and the anonymous readers of the Jowrnal of the History of Sexuality for their comments; Martha M. Umphrey for sharing with me her work on Harry Thaw; and Nancy Barnes for encouragement, discussion, and a thoughtful line edit. This piece was first presented as a conference paper at "The Queer 1950s and 60s," Center for the Humanities, Wesleyan University, 26 April
2003. It is dedicated to the memory of Jack Anderson, investigative journalist and master of political gossip, 1922-2005.

The F.B.I.: A Special Report by David Burnham
The Nation. August 11, 1997
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the most powerful and secretive agency in the United States today. Despite the bureau's influence over a broad terrain of American life, independent examinations of the "B," as special agents refer to it, have been rare. (In the sixties The Nation published a special issue on the bureau by Fred Cook, which became The FBI Nobody Knows.) No Congressional committee has mustered the political will and staff to carry out a comprehensive review. With the bureau's political power greater than at any time in its eighty-nine-year history, an examination of the questions of how well it is performing its crime-fighting mission and safeguarding civil liberties is overdue. Beyond the recent series of F.B.I. problems—the tragedy at Waco, the shootout at Ruby Ridge, the Atlanta Olympic Park bombing, the flawed investigations by its scientific lab—are there broader kinds of defects that demand attention? We asked David Burnham, a reporter who has specialized in law-enforcement issues for thirty years, to review the current state of the F.B.I. With research support from The Nation Institute's Investigative Fund, Burnham availed himself of an entirely new kind of information—internal administrative data maintained by the Justice Department, which tracks every instance an investigative agency like the F.B.I. refers a matter for prosecution and the ultimate disposition of these referrals. Data tapes containing this detailed information, from the mid-seventies to fiscal year 1996, were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), a research organization formed in 1989 by Burnham and Susan Long, a professor at Syracuse University. They then verified and analyzed the data. The F.B.I. did not respond to our request for comment on the findings of this article. The Editors

Ed Murphy: Gay Blackmailer and Activist – Chapter 4 – Secret Lives: J. Edgar Hoover and Roy Cohn
Posted by Censor Librorum on Jun 17, 2021
The person who had the most damaging information about FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover was Susan Kaufman Rosenstiel, the 4th wife of liquor magnate Lewis S. Rosenstiel, chairman of Schenley Industries, Inc. Rosenstiel, a bisexual, was a former bootlegger who was a close associate of mobsters Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. He was good friends with power broker attorney, Roy Cohn, and J. Edgar Hoover. He endowed the J. Edgar Hoover Foundation with $1 million in 1965. Lewis Rosenstiel’s lifelong involvement with mobsters came to light only in 1970, when the New York State Legislative Committee on Crime determined that he was part of a consortium to smuggle liquor during Prohibition.
Lewis and Susan Rosenstiel had an ugly, contentious divorce before Lewis Rosenstiel moved on to Wife #5. Rosenstiel spent almost half a million dollars trying to concoct evidence to use against his wife in divorce proceedings. He may have turned to his friend, J. Edgar Hoover, for help. At least, this is what Susan Kaufman thought, believing that the FBI director helped stack the cards against her in divorce court. In retaliation, she told anyone who would listen that Hoover was a cross-dresser and homosexual.
During their divorce, Rosenstiel’s 4th wife, Susan Kaufman, alleged that Rosenstiel hosted orgies at the Plaza hotel where he supplied “boy prostitutes” for certain guests. Kaufman would later make the same claims under oath for the New York State Joint Legislative Committee on Crime in the early 1970s. Most of Kaufman’s testimony to the Committee was behind closed doors and remains sealed. Her claims are shocking, but both the Crime Committee Chairman, John Hughes, and his Chief Counsel, Edward McLaughlin, found them credible. McLaughlin remembered her as an excellent witness:  “I thought she was absolutely truthful. The woman’s power of recall was phenomenal. Everything she said was checked and double-checked, and everything that was checkable turned out to be true.”
Larry Summer’s book, Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover,” describes one night in 1958 where Susa  n Rosenstiel witnessed a sex scene with her husband, Roy Cohn, J. Edgar Hoover and two teenage boys in a suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York. Hoover was in drag, “wearing a fluffy black dress…lace stockings and high heels, and a black curly wig. He had makeup on, and false eyelashes. Roy introduced him as “Mary” …It was obvious he wasn’t a woman; you could see where he shaved.” They had some drinks, and the teenage prostitutes arrived. They went into the bedroom and “Mary” undressed, taking off his dress and pants and leaving on a garter belt. He lay on the bed, “and the boys work on him with their hands. One of them wore rubber gloves…Then Rosenstiel got into the act with the boys. I thought, “You disgusting old man.” Hoover and Cohn were watching, enjoying it.”
If what she described happened, it would be easy to imagine that Meyer Lansky and others in organized crime had blackmail photos

Gossip Men
J. Edgar Hoover, Joe McCarthy, Roy Cohn, and the Politics of Insinuation
Christopher M. Elias
J. Edgar Hoover, Joseph McCarthy, and Roy Cohn were titanic figures in midcentury America, wielding national power in government and the legal system through intimidation and insinuation. Hoover’s FBI thrived on secrecy, threats, and illegal surveillance, while McCarthy and Cohn will forever be associated with the infamous anticommunist smear campaign of the early 1950s, which culminated in McCarthy’s public disgrace during televised Senate hearings. In Gossip Men, Christopher M. Elias takes a probing look at these tarnished figures to reveal a host of startling new connections among gender, sexuality, and national security in twentieth-century American politics. Elias illustrates how these three men solidified their power through the skillful use of deliberately misleading techniques like implication, hyperbole, and photographic manipulation. Just as provocatively, he shows that the American people of the 1950s were particularly primed to accept these coded threats because they were already familiar with such tactics from widely popular gossip magazines.
By using gossip as a lens to examine profound issues of state security and institutional power, Elias thoroughly transforms our understanding of the development of modern American political…

A Two Part Christmas Special with Golden Globe winning Film Director Martin Brest, who directed Scent of a Woman, Midnight Run and other films, on the Genius of Charlie Chaplin.

No single individual did more to shape modern cinema than the actor, director and producer Charlie Chaplin. One of the greatest of all comic mimes he also pioneered cinematic techniques and story-telling. His films, with his iconic role as the beleaguered little tramp with baggy trousers, moustache, cane and bowler hat, were not only comic masterpieces, but unflinching looks at poverty, unemployment, capitalist exploitation, the callousness of authority, the search for meaning and dignity in a hostile world and the yearning for love and acceptance. He argued that drama should be derived from the close observation of life. He refused to follow the conventions, including the penchant for exaggerated melodrama, perfecting his work with hundreds of takes, subtle acting and nuanced facial expressions. He created full length feature films with highly crafted plots and characters. He strove, he said, “to put across the philosophical doubt I feel about things and people.” His films, he said, were a metaphysical excercise, an attempt to unmask as “absurd, antiquated, and unfair to humanity” the idea that there exists “a cosmos where humans were held responsible for their actions or the results of their actions.”  The French filmmaker Jean Luc Goddard wrote of Chaplin that “while remaining marginal to the rest of cinema” he “ended up filling this margin with more things (what other word can one use: ideas, gags, intelligence, honor, beauty, movement?) than all directors together have put in a whole book.” Chaplin, the most famous silent film star of his era, swiftly earned the enmity of J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI who saw in his poignant portrayals of the marginalized and forgotten political subversion. The FBI, which began investigating Chaplin in 1922 and would amass an FBI file of 1,900 pages on him for his alleged “communist sympathies,” finally drove him into exile. In 1952, while Chaplin was in London for the premier of his film Limelight, the U.S. Attorney General revoked Chaplin’s re-entry permit. This ended his Hollywood career. He would spend the rest of his life in Switzerland. Joining me to discuss the importance and legacy of Charlie Chaplin is the film director, screenwriter and producer Martin Brest.  Martin has directed numerous films some of which include Midnight Run with Robert De Niro, for which he won a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Motion Picture, Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino, for which he won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, with Pacino winning for Best Actor along with the blockbuster Beverly Hills Cop, nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
