Shows with positive images of fathers?

Post by Fiannan »

Is it just me or are fathers presented either as abusive or idiots on TV? And if this is the case then how is this propaganda message affecting both adult women and boys and girls?

Correct me if I am wrong but I would have to say the most positive father image on TV today is the character Rick Grimes on "The Walking Dead." Ironic that I will bet there are parents who would never allow their kids to watch this series because it is too violent. Then again, would watching Disney give them better values?

You would have to go back several decades....most recent one I can think of would be The Cosby Show or Happy Days (Howard was more of a non story most of the time, but every once in a while he was the voice of reason). Andy Griffith is the one that sticks out in my mind (and he was a socialist in real life too).

I canceled cable and wised up when my son was born. I do not know about shows anymore but I suspect that neither gender is portrayed in any good light. Its not just the men. I think there is an article in the newspaper that came with the new ensign about how men are portrayed in media - if i remember right. I haven't read it yet but I am curious now what it says.

Can't look at Disney for any moral values. Hell, I heard they even have a show with "2 mommy's" now, Walt would roll loved in his grave if he could.

I kind of like "The Middle." Unlike most shows, the father is not portrayed as an idiot who needs the mother to keep saving him from himself. Other than that, there really hasn't been a very good father figure on TV since Cosby (that I recall).

Hey, how about " I Love Lucy." I like how they portrayed Ricky. You rarely ever see a woman act like Lucy anymore.

I've been pondering this. So many shows in which the bad dad comes back to atone for his neglect and the kid is angry at him. Teaches women and kids to be angry. I recall my mom telling me repeatedly about my dad's shortcomings (won't take her on a date, etc). A lot of ways to be trained to hate men. Therapists make good money trying to purge the anger toward dads.

While people used to be happy if a dad just dragged home something to eat, now he is to be willing to wash dishes, change diapers, be romantic, while strong.

Women are portrayed as overly strong, and men as buffoons and weak. On many shows, somehow 125 pound women are able to knock 250 pound men across the room. On one show recently, a female cop punched her idiot male partner in the face, and just walked away, and he of course, did nothing. Which trains girls that it is okay to hit men, and trains boys to accept physical abuse by women. Little known fact that women are equally capable of physical abuse.

On a side note, my wife watches many cop/detective shows, and I'm usually in the room typing on this so I notice things. I've been puzzled for quite some time as to why women would like such shows, as I figured women were more nurturing and sensitive. However, these shows have much violence, and often show dead bodies in many different forms. Maggot infested, or dismembered - on one show they opened a refrigerator and there was a head on the top shelf.

So we recoil in horror should a nipple appear on the screen. Surely that would harm "the children". Yet somehow we worry little about violence.

Anyway, I finally realized why women like watching such violence. Such shows, along with the men as buffoons, usually have some tough guys - "Book 'em, Danno!" Tough men are the fantasy of women. And it considered fine to fantasize about men, as long as they have their clothes on.

You would think we would be against fantasies about the other sex across the board, but there is only a war against the fantasies enjoyed mostly by men. Which fantasies of other women's bodies threaten the source of power for women. So women are allowed to fantasize about other men's money and toughness or whatever, which might explain why most divorces are initiated by women, and destroy countless families.

By the way, I have a cousin who had his first wife leave him a few years ago when his business took a dive, and she needed more money. So last year he got married in the temple again. Just got word she left him a couple weeks ago.

I know it can happen both ways - we just don't hear much about the lusts or fantasies or failings of women.

actually there is a bad rap for women who sit at home eating bon bons and watching soaps.
Or reading fantasy novels.
It goes both ways for sure.
I do wish that there would be no fantasizing about the opposite sex (while married) and it could be possible if each partner did their job and loved whole heartedly their spouse.

We could rip apart the media for all sorts of bad messages - its entertainment not life school. Its meant to be a break from life ie. entertainment. I do not support it, just saying.

What???!! A show with positive portrayals of men???!!! :-o That's like finding hens teeth, now adays.

It's an assault on masculinity and the beginnings of the downfall of the family/society. Take out the men, the rest will surely fall thereafter.

You know, the big irony is Walt himself was only married once, plus more about him which is drastically different from what the business is now. I think he's happy where he is. Who knows, perhaps he's a missionary serving on the other side by this point.

Ok, this isn’t a show, but an actual Wedding event… brought tears to my eyes.

Laugh if you like, but I loved Duck Dynasty when it came out. I thought it was a welcome breath of fresh air. Yes, it was cheesy slapstick comedy and bad acting. But behind it all was a deep rooted faith in Christ and traditional family values. I never once worried about the content with my young (at the time) children watching.

No wonder the PTB worked so hard to bash that family and get the show cancelled. Phil and his family may be a little rough around the edges by today's standards, but I believe they are sincere and godly people.

I couldn't agree more! Fantastic show with incredible people with unapologetic Christian values.... And I'm sure he annoys most people but I laugh and laugh and laugh at Uncle Si😂😂

I remember watching an Andy Griffith episode where one of the characters won't get a shot. Andy uses all sorts of 'persuasion' to get him to. It's crazy how even back in 1962 they were pushing stuff like this. The rot is deep.

Apparently that episode has even been referenced by covid vax fanatics in the last couple years as a way to get people to take the covid vax.

Thanks for sharing. All the anime I’ve come across for my kids has been garbage…I wasn’t sure if you were being serious so I had to check it out. ;)

The sad thing is that this has been pushed for so long now that it's become mainstream public belief. Remember, the official stance of the church is now that Eve was the heroine in the Garden. She knew Gods secret will and obeyed the "higher law" even though the scripture says that she was beguiled and she admitted the same. Which is it? Can't have it both ways.

You’d have to go back to the ‘50s and 60s. Shows like “Father Knows Best” (imagine that title now a days) or “The Donna Reed Show” or “Leave It To Beaver”. Even “Family Affair” although the father dies and his brother takes the kids. But the uncle does a fair job.

This is compensation for Eve getting it in the neck all this time. Personally I don't think either Adam or Eve were fully conscious of what they did. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I like Charles in Little House on the Prairie, Mike Brady from the Brady Bunch, Marty in Fraiser, Mike Baxter in Last Man Standing, Coulson from Agents of Shield, some K-dramas or C-dramas (like Love like the Galaxy) have really good family units and father figures

On the 'compensation' comment, I see it as a twisted view otherwise called vengeance. "Eve has been blamed all this time, now it's Adam's turn!...(even though the justification makes no sense at all). It's no different than what's on tv everyday. Male , no bueno.

On the other ; ... I certainly can't correct you because i agree . Eve didn't know what the heck was going on....she was like a child going along with a brilliant manipulator. Adam just did what he was told up until Eve did the boo boo and he figured there was no way out except forward....with her.
