December 23rd -- today is Joseph Smith's birthday. We commemorated that at our FHE this evening.
I'm reading a biography of Joseph by George Q Cannon -- and recommend it highly.
"June 1831... Joseph Smith departed from Kirtland, Ohio, to go into Missouri...
From [St. Louis], the Prophet of God WALKED across the entire state of Missouri to Independence, Jackson County, a distance of nearly three hundred miles...
The pains and burdens were unworthy of notice in the delightful anticipation of seeing the land for which the Lord, as had been shown to him by vision and prophecy, had reserved so glorious a future.
He was accompanied by..." p. 117
Why would he WALK across Missouri rather than going by boat up the Missouri river to Independence (as did Sidney Rigdon)?

Re: Joseph Smith's birthday and biography, Zion.
"...the selection and dedication of the center place of Zion and the spot upon which the temple was to be erected... from the day that land was thus dedicated, unshaken confidence in the perfect fulfilment of every promise made concerning it has filled the heart of every faithful member of the Church. .. their daily prayer has been that the Lord would HASTEN the REDEMPTION OF ZION and build up the center stake thereof." p. 122-123
Do we retain the prayer of redeeming the center stake of Zion in Jackson Co., Missouri, and building the prophesied temple there?
