And growing up, my Mother used to give us Sanka and Postum all the time to drink as a hot beverage (they were/are members) since Sanka is only a coffee substitute (tastes like coffee but isn't) and Postum is a multi-grain hot drink that is good for you. Anyway, a few years ago, I noticed that Haagen Daaz and Ben & Jerry's had coffee flavors of ice cream (one is a straight coffee flavor and the other is coffee ice cream with heath bar chunks). If you read the ingredients, it does say 'coffee' on the label, but it's not a drink, it's not hot and coffee has actually been found to be quite healthy for you with over 150 antioxidants. So here is my dilemma... I am tempted to buy coffee flavored ice cream, but would that be breaking the word of wisdom? Any advice or input would be great. Thanks!
Go buy the ice cream and enjoy it. Then be received by the Savior. He does not care what kind of ice cream you eat. ;)
NO KIDDING JULES IS RIGHT! GEEZ! And put some rum in it while your at it!

On all seriousness, I'm trying to cast off the dumb @#$ pharisee in me, living the letter of the law. If you like coffee, go have some coffee ice cream. I bet Joseph would indulge himself with you!

I already have actually... just wanted to see what others' thoughts were on the subject because I can't imagine that having a pint of Ben & Jerry's coffee toffee ice cream would make me a sinner. My interpretation of the WOW is that 'strong drinks' are any drinks that can harm, impair or degrade the body in some way... IMHO, coffee does not do that... maybe that's why my Mother always bought Sanka and still does... and still has a temple recommend. I do want to make sure that I only indulge myself with it once in a while so as to not let Satan get me to start having coffee-flavored drinks and then hot coffee itself because I know there is a substance in hot coffee that is similar to tar that eats your stomach lining. But that's the only danger as far as I know. Speaking of coffee drinks... what about a caramel latte frozen coffee drink? Would that be considered breaking the WOW?

passionflower wrote:I would not do it if I was you, especially if you know you have a weakness for the coffee flavor. And the way you mention the antioxidants in coffee.

It's not a weakness... I've loved the taste and smell of coffee since I was a boy and have not ever taken a drink of it. I can do without, but it sure does smell wonderful in the morning - I miss those days with my Grandparents. Thanks for the concern. :ymhug:

Think about it. Are you trying to give yourself an excuse to indulge?

Yeah, I guess you could say that, but it's not like I'm seeking an excuse to start drinking coffee every morning... only the coffee flavored ice cream every once in a while.

Alot of other better, more wholesome foods, that have a great smell, have antioxidants, too. Are you just as tempted by those foods as by coffee? Why or why not? Be honest.

I'm not sure which foods you're eluding to, but coffee has an aroma all its own.

Too many people consider coffee a comforting and stimulating friend. I say, with a friend like this, who needs enemies.

Coffee is not an inherent evil... it all boils down to the whole 'moderation in all things' commandment.

If this is something that has such enticing qualities for you, I repeat, I would stay away from it, if I was you. Other foods smell good and have antioxidants. Go get those.

I have and do, like blueberries... probably the most powerful antioxidant on the planet. And they sure are good in a smoothie.

A woman at work made and brought in some chocolate pecan pie bourbon balls.
They were to die for.
Bourbon? Oh my.... :ymblushing:

Here is the recipe:

2 1/2 cups of TOASTED PECANS- chopped very fine
1 C. graham cracker crumbs
1 C. brown sugar (packed)
1/2 tsp salt
2 Tablespoons of maple syrup
1/4 cup bourbon
1 tsp vanilla

mix all together with your hands to make sure it is completely mixed. roll into balls and place in fridge for 2 hours.

Now you may coat them in chocolate, (dark, milk chocolate, semi-sweet, white etc) Melt chocolate in bowl over warm water, not letting the bottomw of the bowl touch the water. Sprinkle just a dab of sea salt on top the minute you take them out to place on a rack to harden.

Oooh, nice. Which beverages do you find increase your frequency. I could use some of that.

Mix that vanilla extract to the quarter cup of bourbon, which from what I've read is at least 40%, and you've got yourself some treat. Did I mention it was REALLY good. I didn't know it had bourbon in it until a day later when someone told me. I forwarded the recipe to my wife and her response, "I've always wanted to try bourbon." Uh-oh, I guess I'm now stuck.

So some mild barley drinks and drinks made from other grains? This will raise my frequency? Do you have any good recipes?

Barley, hops, water and yeast. You can try mixing and matching yourself, but others do it for a living and make decent products sold in the marketplace.

I've always loved the smell and aroma of a good pipe.

Now I know that tobacco users are disgusting sub-humans to be confined eternally to hell.

But still, what y'all think? Maybe not now, but when I'm old and craggily.

If that's the worst you do you'll beat us all to heaven.

I believe the more important parts of the WoW are not even followed by most LDS, and that the 'do's' can have a greater effect on our health and spirituality then the don'ts. And while heredity plays a part, it's interesting, that my LDS father has stayed away from the 'WoW don'ts' all his life and has the worst of health now at 80, we are amazed he has lasted this long. While my non-LDS father in law, who is also 80, smoked til he was 60 and still drinks, including coffee and still runs marathons, because despite that he drinks coffee and alcohol, he watches his health and what he eats in other respects.

I know very few LDS who really keep the whole Word of Wisdom, most seem to pick and choose what parts they want to obey.

And I confess, I use vanilla, generously.

But go by the Spirit of course (as long as it agrees with true scripture)

But there are so many more vital commandments that get completely overlooked and discarded by most all LDS I know, including leaders, while the WoW seems to get top billing, probably only because it's more obvious.

And btw, I also love the smell of coffee, for it also reminds me of my grandparent's home growing up. I love walking into coffee shops or someone's house who has it, for it is such a comforting feeling because of the memory.

Ajax, all you gotta do is poke a few holes in a coke can and do your thing! :)

Is there such a thing as a pack a day pipe smoker?

Cigs have always smelt gross to me. But pipes.

A few weeks ago my son and I had "butterscotch beers" which is essentially the "butter beer" from Harry Potter movies.

It was essentially Cream soda with a strong butterscotch taste and was REALLY good.

So trying to make our own, I bought a couple of bottles (2 liter) of Cream soda and some butterscotch syrup, putting about a teaspoonful in a glass of cream soda. It was really close and sooo good.

Anyway, long story short, I probably drank 2.5 liters of it between yesterday and today. No alcohol or other "proscribed" substances, but from volume alone I probably broke the word of wisdom worse than any of the J Golden Kimball examples, or more than Ajax does with his occasional "mild grain beverages".

Sounds like a fun thing to do with the kids OI.
Was it as simple as Cream soda + butterscotch syrup? Did you add a little butter. I just saw a recipe on line that was cream soda + butterscotch syrup + butter.

Looks like they also sell some on amazon:

Yeah, the Flying Cauldron stuff was being sold at a local store, which is what we originally tried, but was on the pricey side.

I think better than butterscotch syrup would be butterscotch extract (the syrup didn't mix well and to the degree it did mix it made it too sweet.)

Didn't even think of adding butter. But we really did like the Flying Cauldron stuff and figured we could make a "close enough" on our own.

My point was that tobacco use is dang hard to quit once you start. It doesn't really matter the form.

But yes, pipes can smell pretty darn enticing.
