Does anyone else miss President Hinckley?
I was only ever able to personally attend one session of General Conference. It was President Hinckley's last. I was very, very grateful for it. A few minutes ago, I stumbled upon President Hinckley's last testimony given to the British Isles, in Preston, England (Sorry, I haven't taken the time to learn to embed):

All I can say is, WOW. I miss President Hinckley so much. I had forgotten until just now, listening to his voice, as one from the dust. He was the prophet for most of my gospel life (or the longest period?), after my conversion, and he was so loving. I don't want to disparage any other prophets or General Authorities, but the world certainly lost something when President Hinckley went on to his next calling. I will miss him for a long, long time. God bless you President and Sister Hinckley!
The church sure feels different to me since his passing (more specifically, the last few years). I think it was a slow and gradual change. I'm sure its a lot of variables (politics, the economy, heck even weather affects peoples moods), but I just know I don't feel the same Spirit among many members. I guess maybe I just miss "my prophet" (the one I learned most from). I heard from people similar things who lived during David O. McKay's tenure. I remember one sister 10 or so years ago who spoke fondly of him. She said (IIRC), "I love all the prophets, but David O. McKay was special, and there's a special place in my heart for him." From what I read he pretty was jovial too.
I have no idea who will ultimately be the next prophet, for health reason, etc. But I sure hope that during the rest of President Monson's tenure and the next Prophet, that the love will come back.
That's all I wanted to say.

Could've used his PR savvy during Prop 8. I'm sure President Monson missed him during all that.

Ditto. I remember him coming to speak at a big fireside for singles, years ago. I really enjoyed his testimony. He's a very loving authority.Simon wrote:I feel that way about Elder Scott

You're welcome. It really made my day. It's been a rough year this year, and it was nice to hear his familiar voice, and partake of his testimony.samizdat wrote:Thanks for the video jdawg. It warmed me up immensely.

Yes, he essentially said as much in the Fireside. It was one of my very early posts when I first joined. But he spoke very humbly and powerfully about the Apostolic witness (and process).

Jdawg, I have had the same thought. I think you are right, the economic and political landscape have had a huge impact on the church since his passing.
One Of my favorite Mormon messages is the one where pres. Hinckley tells the story of the boys who put the coins in the farmers shoe. When he tells that story I can't help but shed a tear or two. It hearkens back to a time when there seemed to be more good in the world.

I really loved President Hinckley and had a really hard time thinking of President Monson as the President after Hinckley's death. I loved Hinckley's talks. They were filled with a lot of truth and almost always touched my heart. I have never really felt that way about President Monson's talks since he took over. I do miss President Hinckley.

This is my very favorite message also. It brings me to tears everytime, too. I told the story on the "Help these two families" thread, about how someone once anonymously helped out family at Christmastime. Truly a humbling experience. That message is great. My dad told some pretty good stories about things that happened last century around the Great Depression time. Every era has its challenges I guess.dman wrote:Jdawg, I have had the same thought. I have always enjoyed President Monson's talks ("Hidden Wedges" being my favorite), but the thing I remember about President Hinckley's talks is that he so sincerely spoke of his love for us. I felt it differently I guess. Maybe it was his age difference, and the time period in which he lived (he was many years senior to Thomas S. Monson), I don't know. As I mentioned before I don't know what all influences are different, but even the way church corporations operate seem to be shifting. It's sad to me.Called to Serve wrote:I really loved President Hinckley and had a really hard time thinking of President Monson as the President after Hinckley's death. I loved Hinckley's talks. But I really mostly just was grateful to hear the voice of an old friend, whom I miss dearly. God bless him.

I miss his sense of humor so much! He lightened up every conference. Once on the way back from a regional conference, his car drove by our car. I told my kids to hurry and wave. We waved like a bunch of crazies. He smiled and waved back. I'll never forget that. So simple. So dear.

Re: Does anyone else miss President Hinckley?
I miss President Hinckley too. He was an amazing man. He was the Prophet when I came back to the church. His influence, devotion, love, humor, passion and testimony drew me in, and I loved him dearly for all of those things and a million reasons more. One time I wrote him a letter and shared a poem with him that I had written. I told him of my Alma the younger type conversion, shared my love of him, the Savior, and this church. My heart more than jumped a beat when one day I came home, and to my surprise found a letter from him in my mail box. The Prophet, President Gordon B. Hinckley wrote me, of all the tons of people on this earth, and in our church, he wrote a letter to me!!! I still have that letter to this day. I know that one day I will get to meet him face to face, and I feel certain that he will remember my letter and my poem.
I am very grateful for this Gospel and so thankful to have such a glorious heritage of faithful and devoted Saints that our mine to look up to. I am so proud of this heritage that I can call mine. I am even more thankful for the Savior who loves me unconditionally and continues to richly bless my life even though I do not deserve his tender mercies. It is an anchor to my soul, and a deliciously cool drink when feeling parched from the hardness of this life. Thank you Lord for your blessings, thank you Lord for this life.
