My small thoughts on the atonement from this weekend

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to work on a neighbor's car. After a few hours of failing to diagnose the problem he was having, we decided a timing belt change was in order (car had 221,000 miles and he didn't know if it had been changed in the 10+ years he has owned it). I told him I would be happy to do it, and that there wasn't much need for him to be there since having 2 people doesn't speed it along much and I knew he had chores to do at home.

One thing this brother said struck me. Before leaving me to my task he said, "I get the feeling I don't even understand what I am asking you to do for me." I responded, "I know you don't, but I know what I'm getting into and I am still willing to do it." I thought about that short exchange a lot later on. I wonder if there was a similar conversation at some point with the Savior albeit on a much larger scale.

I am so thankful for the mission the Lord carried out during his mortal time on Earth, but I know I still don't come close to comprehending what it was that he did for me. I'm glad he chose to do it regardless of how little I appreciate it.

Thanks for the analogy. It's good to read stories that make the seemingly incomprehensible a little more comprehensible. Like the scriptures say, all things testify there is a Christ, even auto mechanics. (At least the trustworthy ones)

triple thanks, is is so awesome that we can see how our own lives relate to someone so perfect and divine.

forgive me if this is "derailing the thread" or otherwise not fitting local forum etiquette. (socal rules are not my strong point) but your exp. brought an old one of mine to mind.

years ago when my youngest brother was 5 he picked up a pinecone. It hurt him so he dropped it but the tiny spines stayed in his hand and became infected. The pain from the infection drove him to ask for help from his father. Father recruited me his oldest brother to assist. holding his hand open while the many spines were removed by digging them out with a needle.

His pleading/screaming for it to stop made me think about how we are sometimes doing the same. we sin or make an honest mistake and we immediately change our behavior. later not even realising why we hurt we ask the lord for help then as he is digging out the infection we are pleading with tears in our eyes for it to stop.

Wonderful. ITs so true, even now we may understand a little more but we still don't quite get it. Savior becomes much more meaningful thte more understanding we gain.

I have noticed this with sports, I never liked sports, but recently I have loved watching my college footbal team. You enjoy it more when it means something to you. But also you enjoy it much more, like nascar or X-games (my fav) when you understand the skill beyond what they are doing. The more understanding we get of the atonement we also can have a greater gratitude for what He did.
