The federal government’s dereliction of duty at the border is opening the door for private citizens, in partnership with local governments, to address the migration crisis. But the efforts of such well-intentioned groups are being undermined by state policy that leaves a lot to be desired.
One organization in particular, Patriots for America, has stepped up in Texas with the aim of “fight[ing] to defend everyone’s Constitutional rights while helping protect our borders and working together with law enforcement to rescue minors and children from sex trafficking,” per the group’s website.
Media have described Patriots for America, whose armed members include former law enforcement and military who train other members in the use of firearms, as a Christian militia group. But Samuel Hall, the group’s founder, emphasized in a conversation with Fox News that their mission is humanitarian in nature.
Patriots for America, Hall said, strives to get asylum seekers out of the hands of gangs and drug traffickers.
“These are asylum seekers, these are families with small children. We’ve been pulling even babies out of the river. And I’m not talking about waist-deep rivers…they’re swimming with their baby and anything can happen. The current’s strong,” Hall told Fox News.

U.S. District Judge Douglas Rayes said in his ruling that the law appears to be vague. He said, “When the punitive and regulatory weight of the entire Arizona code is involved, Plaintiffs should not have to guess at whether their conduct is on the right or the wrong side of the law.”
“A law is unconstitutionally vague if its application is so unclear that people of ordinary intelligence cannot figure out in advance how to comply with it,” Rayes continued.
The challenge to the law came from opponents seeking to prevent abortion restrictions in the state. The motion was filed last month.

To accomplish that end they surrounded a neural network-connected robot with five cameras and allowed the device to observe its own movements for several hours. The neural network could subsequently predict, with a high degree of accuracy, where the robot's mechanical arm would be in the physical space if the robot moved it.
"To me, this is the first time in the history of robotics that a robot has been able to create a mental model of itself," Columbia University researcher Hod Lipson told the outlet. "It's a small step, but it's a sign of things to come."

The Respect for Marriage Act would “enshrine marriage equality for the purposes of federal law, and provide additional legal protections for marriage equality.”
