Specter of election chaos raises questions on military role
WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s a question Americans are unaccustomed to considering in a presidential election campaign: Could voting, vote-counting or the post-vote reaction become so chaotic that the U.S. military would intervene?
The answer is yes, but only in an extreme case. There is normally no need for the military to play any role in an election. The Constitution keeps the military in a narrow lane — defending the United States from external enemies. Civil order is left largely to civilian police. But there is an obscure law, the Insurrection Act, that theoretically could thrust the active-duty military into a police-like role. And governors have the ability to use the National Guard in state emergencies if needed.

Google is giving data to police based on search keywords, court docs show - CNET
There are few things as revealing as a person's search history, and police typically need a warrant on a known suspect to demand that sensitive information. But a recently unsealed court document found that investigators can request such data in reverse order by asking Google to disclose everyone who searched a keyword rather than for information on a known suspect.
In August, police arrested Michael Williams, an associate of singer and accused sex offender R. Kelly, for allegedly setting fire to a witness' car in Florida. Investigators linked Williams to the arson, as well as witness tampering, after sending a search warrant to Google that requested information on "users who had searched the address of the residence close in time to the arson."

Ultra-Orthodox COVID Protesters Descend on Journalist’s Home After Leader’s Arrest
Supporters of the political gadfly and Trump fan Heshy Tischler surrounded the Brooklyn home of a journalist Sunday night after Tischler was arrested for allegedly encouraging protesters to pursue the reporter while he covered an anti-lockdown event last week. Late on Sunday, a crowd of Tischler supporters gathered outside Jacob Kornbluh’s house in Brooklyn, chanting “shame on you,” and taunting him through a megaphone, as police looked on. The respected Jewish Insider reporter has become the subject of ire following his reporting of social-distancing violations in neighborhoods where many ultra-Orthodox Jews live. Kornbluh was covering an anti-lockdown protest last week when he said Tischler, one of the most visible critics of lockdown and mask measures in Brooklyn, spotted him and urged supporters to pursue him. Kornbluh said he was subsequently hit and kicked by the crowd. Anti-lockdown protests led by some ultra-Orthodox residents have flared up in several Brooklyn neighborhoods after the New York state government placed new restrictions on several zip codes in the borough with spiking coronavirus test positivity rates.

Bank of England asks banks on readiness for negative rates
If the benchmark rate were cut to less than zero, from the current 0.1%, commercial banks would have to pay the Bank of England to hold deposits for them. Policy makers have previously indicated that they were willing to consider negative interest rates amid the economic pressures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A negative interest rate would encourage banks to lend money out rather than leave it at the Bank of England. A negative interest rate could theoretically result in savers being charged to hold deposits in their bank accounts, but commercial considerations, such as the need to attract deposits, might prevent banks from passing on all their costs to customers.

Anti-police 'satanist' runs for sheriff as Republican in NH
With more than 4,200 votes, Republicans in one New Hampshire county nominated an unconventional candidate for sheriff: a self-described satanist whose campaign slogan disparages the police.
Since then, Aria DiMezzo, a transgender woman in her early 30s, has become a minor celebrity — and the target of online attacks, vandalism including a homophobic slur spray-painted on her car, and a write-in campaign to weaken her chances.
DiMezzo — the lone Republican candidate for Cheshire County sheriff in September’s primary — believes most voters blindly checked the box next to her name. She only registered as a Republican at the last second, after concluding her bid to get on the ballot as a Libertarian — her preferred party — would have required gathering signatures amid the coronavirus pandemic.

I have always wanted a "none of the above" option on the ballot. If that option wins the election, the all of those candidates are disqualified and a new election must be held with all new candidates. In the meantime, the government can just do nothing.

This is my biggest complaint about Trump, the debt.
Debt Reckoning – Reason.com
In March, Congress passed the CARES Act, named to show what lawmakers on both sides of the aisle wanted to be seen to be doing in the wake of the economic devastation caused by the outbreak of COVID-19. They cared to the tune of about $2.2 trillion, all of it billed to the deficit, making it the single biggest legislative care package in history by a wide margin. It was the first time Congress had ever passed a bill with a trillion-dollar price tag. As a point of comparison, the Affordable Care Act, the 2010 health law that would be known as Obamacare, which was viewed as unusually costly, had to be whittled down during the legislative process so as not to technically exceed the trillion-dollar mark. Its 10-year price tag, at the time of passage, came in around $940 billion.
But any real worries about those sky-high figures appear to have melted away in the face of the pandemic, which has exposed the underlying unseriousness of Washington's approach to budgeting. For nearly 40 years, federal lawmakers have been trying, or at least pretending to try, to reduce the deficit. But when asked to make tough budgetary choices, they consistently buckle under the pressure of partisan politics. This, in turn, has given rise to simplistic economic theories designed to justify whatever outcomes are most convenient.
The CARES Act followed a series of smaller relief bills and would be succeeded by a $310 billion top-up to the original bill's small business loan program, bringing Congress' total coronavirus relief spending to nearly $3 trillion. And that was just for starters. By summer's end, House Democrats and Senate Republicans were haggling over a new round of stimulus, with Democrats pushing a $3 trillion aid package and Republicans, representing the limited-government side of the argument, backing a mere $1 trillion in additional deficit spending.

Woke mob outraged over Gal Gadot's role as Cleopatra. Then Egyptologist sets the record straight.
The woke internet mob exploded with rage Sunday when actress Gal Gadot was announced as the lead actor in the upcoming major Hollywood movie "Cleopatra," centering on the life of the ancient Egyptian queen.
Then an actual Egyptologist set the record straight.
Critics complained that Gadot, an Israeli actress best known for her role as Wonder Woman, is unfit for the role because of her light skin complexion. Woke critics suggested that an Arab actress should have been cast for the role instead.
"Which Hollywood dumbass thought it would be a good idea to cast an Israeli actress as Cleopatra (a very bland looking one) instead of a stunning Arab actress like Nadine Njeim? And shame on you, Gal Gadot. Your country steals Arab land & you're stealing their movie roles... smh," one critic said.
Another said, "I'm sure Gal Gadot is going to do a wonderful job as Cleopatra. However, for me personally, I would love a Cleopatra who's darker than a brown paper bag, because that seems a bit more historically accurate."
What did the Egyptologist say?
As it turns out, Gadot is not an inaccurate physical representation of Cleopatra.
Sarah Parcak, an Egyptologist and anthropology professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, explained in a lengthy Twitter thread that
Cleopatra was not dark-skinned like many people may believe.
In fact, Cleopatra was at least half Greek.
"Cleopatra was Cleopatra VII (yes there were many others!). She was of Macedonian Greek descent (father= Ptolemy XII Auletes) but... was was her mother's ethnicity? Egyptian? Greek? Other? Many possibilities. We don't know for sure," Parcak explained. "Her mom was *probably* Cleopatra V, the only attested wife of Ptolemy XII. We know of one child she had, it's not 100% certain she is the mother of Cleopatra. Cleo V's ethnicity is unknown, very little known about her generally, hence Cleopatra's ethnicity= 50% Greek, 50% ?"
So what *could* she have looked like?
The people of Alexandria today (yes Alexandria was Egypt's capital during the Ptolemaic Era) have much lighter skin compared to people in southern Egypt, many with reddish hair and green/blue eyes.
Of course there is Turkish influence and I'm not saying that the people of Alex today look like people did 2000+ years ago.
However- Alex was a hugely cosmopolitan city in Cleopatra's time. You would have seen every type of person imaginable from all over the known world.
Cleopatra probably had lighter skin, not unlike the people of Alex today, but *we don't know for sure*. Her mom could have been from southern Egypt, or Macedonia, or anywhere in the Ptolemaic world (and if she was a secondary wife or concubine all bets are off).
Then Parcak entered what she thought were testy waters, asking the social media world not to "cancel" her over her forthcoming conclusion about whether Gadot is worthy of playing Cleopatra.
"Don't cancel me for what I'm about to say," Parcak said.
"Archaeology and history tell us she wasn't 100% Egyptian, even if she acted like a proper Egyptian queen and spoke/read Egyptian. She was half Macedonian and half who knows, but probably more than 50% Macedonian playing the odds."
"So, hiring a hugely bankable Mediterranean actress to play Cleopatra is... not as off as you might think," Parcak explained.
"Gal Gadot is 100x a better choice than Angelina Jolie. I think she'll be incredible in the role," Parcak added.

Exclusive: America's true unemployment rate - Axios
A person who is looking for a full-time job that pays a living wage — but who can't find one — is unemployed. If you accept that definition, the true unemployment rate in the U.S. is a stunning 26.1%, according to an important new dataset shared exclusively with "Axios on HBO."
* * *
If you measure the unemployed as anybody over 16 years old who isn't earning a living wage, the rate rises even further, to 54.6%. For Black Americans, it's 59.2%.
