Chicago goes into lockdown as bridges raised and freeway exits closed to restrict access to downtown | Daily Mail Online
Black Lives Matter Chicago held a protest Monday night in which they defended looting as a form of 'reparations'
Drawbridges into Chicago were raised Monday night and freeway exits closed as downtown was locked down
Precautions were being taken to avoid a second night of chaos, following riots and looting in the early hours
SWAT teams were seen patrolling the streets of the Illinois city on Monday afternoon
Protests and looting erupted when a false rumor spread that police had shot and killed a child on Sunday
Police in fact had shot and injured a 20-year-old man, who ran from them, turning to fire his gun at officers
Latrell Allen has been charged with attempted murder after the shooting on Sunday which sparked the riots
Chicago's Magnificent Mile was hit by looters after hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police
People then started organizing on Twitter and Facebook to loot downtown in a caravan of vehicles
The violence coincided with the sixth anniversary of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the looting had nothing to do with peaceful protest over police brutality
She denied that the decision not to prosecute looters during George Floyd riots had spurred on looters now

Chicago Raises Bridges After Unrest and Looting Batters Downtown – DNyuz

There was also an exchange of gunfire with the police in the downtown, according to a police spokesman, Tom Ahren. He said on Twitter early Monday that there were “shots fired at police who returned fire,” and that no officers were injured. He said it was “unknown at this time if offenders were shot.”

NYPD cops don't lift a finger as 11-year-old is beaten in broad daylight
NYPD cops had a front-row seat to a five-on-one brawl — but let the violence play out rather than doing their jobs to break it up, The Post has learned.
An 11-year-old girl was slapped, punched, kicked and even shocked with a stun gun by a group of five other girls after a basketball game around 7 p.m. Sunday on East 125th Street near Madison Avenue in Harlem.
During the roughly 4-minute beatdown, cops sat idly in nearby cruisers — but they didn’t get out until the girl was bloody and bruised, a Post photographer observed.
At least 20 police cars were nearby on the street — with at least one a little more than a car-length away, photos show.

Senator Ben Sasse Tells President Trump 'America Doesn't Have Kings' in Response to Recent Executive Orders | National Review
Senator Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) doubled down on his criticism of President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders in a tweet on Monday afternoon, saying “no president” has the power to make such unilateral policy decisions.
“No president — whether named Obama or Trump or Biden or AOC — has unilateral power to rewrite immigration law or to cut taxes or to raise taxes,” Sasse said. “This is because America doesn’t have kings.”

Evidence is growing, but what will it take to prove masks slow the spread of COVID-19? | The Seattle Times
To definitively answer the question of whether face masks protect against the novel coronavirus, here’s what you’d need to do:
▪ Recruit thousands of volunteers.
▪ Randomly divide them into two groups.
▪ Assign one group to always wear masks outside of the house, and one group to never wear masks.
▪ Wait a few months, see who gets infected — then try to sort out all possible confounding variables, like compliance, mask fit and social distancing.
A study like that would be not only tough to pull off, but unethical in the midst of a pandemic. It also wouldn’t be able to determine community-level effectiveness — that is, how well masks work not just to protect individuals, but to reduce the spread of the disease through a population. For that, you would need multiple experimental groups across multiple cities — which isn’t going to happen.
Europe's Top Health Officials Say Masks Aren't Helpful in Beating COVID-19 - Foundation for Economic Education
This apparently did not sit well with Danish health officials. They responded by noting there is little conclusive evidence that face masks are an effective way to limit the spread of respiratory viruses.
“All these countries recommending face masks haven’t made their decisions based on new studies,” said Henning Bundgaard, chief physician at Denmark’s Rigshospitale, according to Bloomberg News. (Denmark has since updated its guidelines to encourage, but not require, the use of masks on public transit where social distancing may not be possible.)
Denmark is not alone.
Despite a global stampede of mask-wearing, data show that 80-90 percent of people in Finland and Holland say they “never” wear masks when they go out, a sharp contrast to the 80-90 percent of people in Spain and Italy who say they “always” wear masks when they go out.

(29) The Old Reader
Aurora, Colorado, police officers ordered at gunpoint a mother and her children out of the SUV the woman was driving, made them lie down on the pavement and handcuffed them after mistaking her vehicle for a motorcycle reported stolen in another state. Police Chief Vanessa Wilson blamed the error on a license plate scanner that hit on the vehicle's license plate number. Wilson did not explain why officers did not confirm the description of the vehicle before pulling it over and detaining the family. "We have been training our officers that when they contact a suspected stolen car, they should do what is called a high-risk stop. This involves drawing their weapons and ordering all occupants to exit the car and lie prone on the ground," she said. Wilson said she has apologized to the family and spoken to the division chief about better training for officers on detaining children.

Trump Teases Further on Executive Order on Pre-Existing Conditions: It’s a “Double Safety Net” and a “Second Platform.” – Reason.com
On Monday, President Trump held a press conference. At 31:30, a reporter asked him about his planned executive order on pre-existing conditions. Why was it necessary, the reporter asked, given the fact that the ACA already requires insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions. Trump's response is barely coherent. He states, over and over again, that the individual mandate was "terminated." It wasn't. The penalty was reduced to $0. But at 33:05, President Trump finally meanders to his answer.

This is not only a lie, it is evil.
Americans Are Growing Less Willing To Beg for Permission To Make a Living – Reason.com
Officials claim doing business is a revocable “privilege,” but many Americans see it as a right that they’ll exercise with or without licenses and permits.
It appears that government-imposed restrictions on travel, business, and social contact don't become more palatable with age. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to simmer, the one competency that officials have consistently displayed is in tightening the screws, using the licenses and permissions they require as enforcement tools. For people tired of being bossed around, the obvious response is to carry on without the government's imprimatur—and they're doing so in droves. It's an attitude likely to live on long after the crisis has passed.
"Our businesses are doomed," Chris Polone, co-owner of a Fort Worth bar that was one of more than 800 such establishments to open in defiance of Texas closure orders, said at the end of July. "We have nothing to lose. We can either fight this thing, Or we can starve ourselves out."
As apocalyptic as that sounds, it's a reasonable statement when the review site Yelp reports that 55 percent of all businesses shut during the pandemic are believed to have closed their doors forever. For many entrepreneurs, breaking the rules may be the only way to survive.

She added in a subsequent tweet that
"along with the 'of course math is neutral because 2+2=4' trope are the related (and creepy) 'math is pure' and 'protect math,'' and that it all "reeks of white supremacist patriarchy. I'd rather think on nurturing people & protecting the planet (with math in service of them goals)."

Neighbor reportedly rushes 5-year-old boy playing outside, puts a gun to his head, and executes him
The most evil thing
A 5-year-old boy is dead after a man in Wilson, North Carolina, reportedly ran up to the child while he was playing in a neighborhood street and fatally shot the child in the head.
According to a report from WRAL-TV, the shooting took place on Sunday.
Cannon Hinnant was playing outside his father's house on the dusky summer evening when their neighbor — 25-year-old Darius N. Sessoms — charged Cannon, produced a handgun, and shot him in the head.
The child's 7-year-old and 8-year-old siblings witnessed the murder.
First responders came to the scene and transported the little boy to Wilson Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Doris Labrant, a neighbor, said she witnessed Sessoms running up to Cannon, putting the gun to his head, and firing the weapon before fleeing the scene into his own home.
She couldn't believe her eyes.
"My first reaction was he's playing with the kids," she recalled. "For a second I thought, 'That couldn't happen.' People don't run across the street and kill kids."
Labrant said the situation became all too real when she saw the child's father react to the horrific scene.
Authorities took Sessoms into custody on Monday night and charged him with first-degree murder. He is being held in the Wilson County Jail without bond.
Authorities have not yet determined a motive in the shooting, but insisted that the killing wasn't random, as Sessoms was reportedly friendly with Cannon's father.

China Masses Missile Launchers Within Range of Taiwan
International news reports have shown satellite images of amphibious armored vehicles and mobile missile launchers of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) massing at military bases in China’s Eastern Theatre Command — in China’s coastal region. These movements place Chinese missiles within range of Taiwan.
The images were originally published by the Canadian military magazine Kanwa Asian Defence. The magazine’s editor, Andrei Chang, wrote of the buildup:
“The PLA ground forces want to play an active role in the Taiwan issue because so far their weapon systems are powerful enough to attack Taiwan without the help of missile force.”
“The Taiwan Strait is just 180km [111 miles] across. The PCL191 rocket launchers are able to destroy all military bases and government buildings on the island accurately because the weapons were equipped with the BeiDou navigation satellite system,” Chang added.
A reporter in the South China Morning Post for August 5 cited an unnamed analyst who said
the deployment of more amphibious weapons systems in mainland China’s coastal cities across the strait from Taiwan is a sign that the armed forces are intended to play a key role in communist China’s long-standing mission to “reunify Taiwan.”

Teacher Worries Online Classes Will Interfere With Propagandizing Students
A Philadelphia public-school teacher recently fretted on Twitter that virtual classrooms might allow parents to interfere with teachers’ propagandizing on behalf of anti-racism and pro-LGBT causes.
Matthew Kay, an English teacher at the Science Leadership Academy, a Philadelphia magnet school, posted a thread on Twitter Saturday that began:
“So, this fall, virtual class discussions will have many potential spectators — parents, siblings, etc. — in the same room. We’ll never be quite sure who is overhearing the discourse. What does this do for our equity/inclusion work?”
“How much have students depended on the (somewhat) secure barriers of our physical classrooms to encourage vulnerability?” he continued.
“How many of us have installed some version of ‘what happens here stays here’ to help this?”
In other words,
Kay is worried that he is teaching his students things of which their parents or other family members may not approve — and that, now that they will have a chance to observe his classes, they may counter his teaching, remove their children from his classes, or even jeopardize his job.

'Mask mouth' is a seriously stinky side effect of wearing masks
Now that dentists have reopened their doors, they’re having patients show up with a nasty set of symptoms, which the doctors have dubbed “mask mouth.”
The new oral hygiene issue — caused by, you guessed it, wearing a mask all the time to prevent the spread of the coronavirus — is leading to all kinds of dental disasters like decaying teeth, receding gum lines and seriously sour breath.
“We’re seeing inflammation in people’s gums that have been healthy forever, and cavities in people who have never had them before,” says Dr. Rob Ramondi, a dentist and co-founder of One Manhattan Dental. “About 50% of our patients are being impacted by this, [so] we decided to name it ‘mask mouth’ — after ‘meth mouth.’ ”
