FBI Special Agent John Kelso, ’66, brought his professional experience back to Allegheny College for a few days of workshops and lectures about leadership and his time as a lead investigator.
Kelso investigated the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. With 270 fatalities, the bombing is among the worst modern terrorist attacks and is the deadliest in the United Kingdom’s history.
Kelso’s visit was part of the Center for Political Participation’s 20th anniversary celebration. The CPP invited several distinguished alumni to return to the college.

OKLAHOMA CITY — A federal judge has dismissed a libel lawsuit filed by a former FBI official who was alleged to have had advance knowledge of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Oliver "Buck" Revell, a retired FBI associate deputy director, complained that a book, "The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror," accused him of allowing the mass murder of the 259 people on board the flight and 11 more on the ground.
The book, by David M. Hoffman, said Revell had prior knowledge of the bombing and pulled his son and daughter-in-law off the plane in London.

The Canadian federal government’s 2023 budget includes language indicating that it will attempt to implement meaningful right to repair reforms by 2024, alongside a new five-year tax credit worth $4.5 billion for Canadian clean tech manufacturers, and the potential adoption of Canadian federal guidelines mandating a universal charging port on many devices to reduce waste.

Any school shooting is horrific. But the Uvalde school shooting went far beyond the usual nightmarish levels of something that happens so often in the United States, we can actually use the modifier “usual.”
Police officers entered the school three minutes after the shooter did. But they did not actually end the terror until more than an hour later.
The problem wasn’t numbers. An earlier report on the shooting — compiled by Texas state officials — made it clear there were plenty of law enforcement officers on hand.
According to the report, 376 law enforcement officers massed at the school. The overwhelming majority of those who responded were federal and state law enforcement. That included nearly 150 U.S. Border Patrol agents and 91 state police officials.
It took 376 officers 77 minutes to finally enter the classroom and kill the shooter. For most of an hour, officers continued to arrive at Robb Elementary, but no one made a move for the classroom. The first officers on the scene, which included then-police chief Pete Arredondo

A far-right state lawmaker in the Oklahoma state legislature has started his first term on the civil liberties shortbus. Sen. Dusty Deevers, a Republican lawmaker and Southern Baptist pastor, introduced a complete ban on consensual pornography despite its First Amendment protections.
Senate Bill 1976, sponsored by Deevers alone, features fascistic language looking to completely ban the viewing, production, and distribution of adult content that is otherwise legally produced.
Any violations of the bill, if it were to become law, would make it a felony or misdemeanor if an individual violates these criminal provisions. According to the bill’s language, legal pornography which features one or more consenting adults over the age of 18 years would be defined similarly to criminal penalties for the morally bankrupt asswipes who produce and distribute child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) or cases of non-consensual intimate imagery (e.g., revenge porn, etc.).
Sen. Deevers intends to create entirely new definitions that would ultimately outlaw porn. Deevers uses bogus public safety terminology to sell the bill, which is at the moment being circulated among far-right Christian nationalists, white supremacists, and extremist anti-pornography campaigners to push the bill.

Shifting toward ad-based tiers has been popular among streaming companies like Netflix, Max, Disney+, and Paramount. Last November, Maine residents voted overwhelmingly (83 percent) to pass a new state right to repair law designed to make auto repairs easier and more affordable. More specifically, the law requires that automakers standardize on-board diagnostic systems and provide remote access to those systems and mechanical data to consumers and third-party independent repair shops.
But as we’ve seen with other states that have passed right to reform laws (most notably New York), passing the law isn’t the end of the story. Corporate lobbyists have had great success not just watering these laws down before passage, but after voters approve them.

On May 22nd, the Pennsylvania House made history by passing two major gun violence prevention bills: one that would expand background checks to private sales of long guns, and one that would empower law enforcement to proactively remove firearms from people who pose a danger to themselves or others, such as domestic abusers.
That was just over two months ago. Since then, both the House and Senate have recessed for the summer, leaving a state budget for the current fiscal year and those long-sought violence prevention bills sitting in limbo. Money that could be flowing into proven violence prevention programs – such as youth activities and public education – is effectively frozen without a budget signed into law.

Dr. Meryl Nass explains how the WHO's proposed pandemic treaty will enable the WHO "to take over jurisdiction of everything in the world by saying that climate change, animals, plants, water systems [and] ecosystems are all central to health".
In addition to that, it will remove human rights protections, enforce censorship and digital passports, require governments to push a single "official" narrative, and enable the WHO to declare "pandemics" on a whim.

For over seven years, beginning during the 2016 elections, the Democrats have attempted to use the FBI as a key weapon in their ongoing assault against Republican political opponent Donald Trump. In doing so, they’ve targeted the working people attracted to his campaign, who Hillary Clinton called “deplorables,” and have gone after crucial constitutional rights workers need to defend and advance our class interests.
Democrats have campaigned to remake the image of the FBI, to turn it into a progressive, woke agency.
This requires trying to smother all memory of decades of FBI spying, harassment and disruption against unionists, Black rights fighters, small farmers battling foreclosure, the Socialist Workers Party, opponents of Washington’s wars and anyone else who challenges the capitalist for-profit system. Since 1939 the FBI has been the capitalist rulers’ central political police attack force.
The results to date are not helpful for the capitalist rulers. The FBI has won a higher approval rating among liberal Democrats and the left

For a long time we’ve been pointing out just how dangerous it is to turn over school discipline problems to cops. Sure, there are reasons schools might need a police response to an incident, but putting cops on staff has allowed administrators to abdicate their duties and turn incidents that could be resolved by educators and parents into arrests, criminal charges, and — as is always the case when cops are involved — acts of brutality.
Cops in schools have arrested kids as young as five years old. In doing so, the only perceived obstacle is the tiny bodies, which are incapable of wearing handcuffs “properly.” Littering campuses with cops also means arresting parents for things their children have done, even when it’s nothing more than the normal creative expression expected from kids, like deploying

Kennedy, who has taken heat from conservatives who claim he's pro-abortion, was able to clarify his position for the streaming audience, which X shows was viewed by about 6.5 million people [people or screens?] throughout the nearly three-hour event. An event staffer announced to the crowd that the number of viewers was significantly higher at around 19 million.
I woke up this am and all the media were filled with the story of how horribly Biden had performed and how his party had suddenly woken up to the fact he might not be their best candidate. Suddenly? Really? “Suddenly” they realized his dead weight might sink their candidacies too.
Then by afternoon Biden was saying he could still pull it together. The “not so fast” voices began to triumph.
I heard an NPR news brief this morning explain Biden’s performance thusly: he had a cold and low energy. That was it. LOW ENERGY?!!
But by 3:32 pm NPR is talking about RFK, Jr. And posting a photo that is surprisingly complimentary. OMG! They have realized that he just might win. And that might just be the best thing that happened to this country

NYPD officer misconduct database had security flaws that could have let hackers covertly modify officer data
The NYPD said no officer data was ever compromised, but it’s unknown how long the vulnerability existed.
A database used to track NYPD officer profiles contained security flaws that would have allowed a skilled-enough hacker to add, remove or modify data entries and insert potentially malicious files into the website’s back-end systems, City & State has learned.
The public-facing database, launched as part of police reforms in the wake of 2020 protests, contains information about active NYPD officers, which includes their disciplinary records, training history, department honors and arrests. In an officer’s disciplinary history, the public can view substantiated allegations of on-the-job misconduct that resulted in charges or discipline, such as an officer using excessive force while making an arrest. A record of NYPD disciplinary trial decisions dating back to 2008 is also available on the public database, with trial records attached and available to download.
The gaps that allowed access to the database’s back-end systems have been at least partly remedied, with NYPD last month walling off access to its developer site where the exploitations could occur. They were discovered by Jason Parker, an independent security researcher who reported the findings to the city and relayed them to City & State.
Parker has previously disclosed lapses in multiple states’ court records systems, as well as a major flaw in a tool used by numerous state and local governments to manage public records requests.

You might recall that Elon Musk claims to hate taxpayer subsidies. They should all be “deleted.” Except for the subsidies given to his companies (sometimes for doing nothing), of course.
Back in 2020, Musk’s satellite broadband venture, Starlink, gamed a Trump-era FCC subsidy program to try and grab $886 million in taxpayer dollars. It was a deal consumer groups noted was a huge waste of money, because the proposal itself — which involved bringing expensive satellite broadband to useless places like airport parking lots and traffic medians — clearly wasn’t the best use of taxpayer funds.
That sort of gamesmanship and fraud was very common with that Trump-era FCC program (the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund). It was so ugly, the Biden FCC has spent the better part of the last few years levying fines against companies that took money but then failed to deliver the promised access. In part because the Trump FCC failed to properly screen applicants.

This is one of the stupidest things ever in terms of public records lawsuits. And that’s saying a lot, considering how often this site has covered public records lawsuits.
This traces back to April of last year. Ben Camacho, a Los Angeles journalist who contributes to sites like Knock LA, sent out a records request for photos of all active LAPD officers. After some early litigation (filed by Camacho), the city agreed to turn over the records. The photos then were placed in a searchable database by activist group Stop LAPD Spying Coalition.
That made LA cops very angry. The police chief demanded the city “prosecute” Camacho for legally obtaining records from the city. The LAPD’s union got in on the action as well, suing the city for releasing the photos and demanding Camacho and Stop LAPD Spying “return” the photos Camacho had lawfully obtained.
That didn’t go anywhere, but the city apparently still felt compelled to oblige the LA police union. It filed a cross motion naming Camacho and Stop LAPD Spying as defendants while simultaneously asking the judge to excuse it from the lawsuit, arguing that it had done nothing wrong.
That’s an insane argument to be making when you’re also arguing the people

For a long time we’ve been pointing out just how dangerous it is to turn over school discipline problems to cops. Sure, there are reasons schools might need a police response to an incident, but putting cops on staff has allowed administrators to abdicate their duties and turn incidents that could be resolved by educators and parents into arrests, criminal charges, and — as is always the case when cops are involved — acts of brutality.
Cops in schools have arrested kids as young as five years old. In doing so, the only perceived obstacle is the tiny bodies, which are incapable of wearing handcuffs “properly.” Littering campuses with cops also means arresting parents for things their children have done, even when it’s nothing more than the normal creative expression expected from kids, like deploying

Kennedy, who has taken heat from conservatives who claim he's pro-abortion, was able to clarify his position for the streaming audience, which X shows was viewed by about 6.5 million people [people or screens?] throughout the nearly three-hour event. An event staffer announced to the crowd that the number of viewers was significantly higher at around 19 million.
I woke up this am and all the media were filled with the story of how horribly Biden had performed and how his party had suddenly woken up to the fact he might not be their best candidate. Suddenly? Really? “Suddenly” they realized his dead weight might sink their candidacies too.
Then by afternoon Biden was saying he could still pull it together. The “not so fast” voices began to triumph.
I heard an NPR news brief this morning explain Biden’s performance thusly: he had a cold and low energy. That was it. LOW ENERGY?!!
But by 3:32 pm NPR is talking about RFK, Jr. And posting a photo that is surprisingly complimentary. OMG! They have realized that he just might win. And that might just be the best thing that happened to this country

FBI Files on Eleanor Roosevelt
While the FBI never launched a formal investigation of Eleanor Roosevelt, FBI references to her comprise one of the largest single files in J. Edgar Hoover's collection. Her affiliation with liberal groups such as the American Youth Congress, as well as her outspokenness about segregation and lynching and her assertions for free speech combined to render her in the minds of conservatives such as Hoover as a threat to the status quo in American society. The 3,000-page FBI file contains charges against her for suspected Communist activities, threats to her life on the grounds of her disloyalty to the country, close monitoring of her activities and writings, and a record of possible insurrectionary groups that she may have influenced. Eleanor denounced the ways by which Hoover's FBI procured its information as "Gestapo-ish" and wrote outraged letters protesting the investigations of her friends and even of her personal secretary. Yet despite her protestations, her "file" would continue to grow until her death.

While the FBI never launched a formal investigation of Eleanor Roosevelt, FBI references to her comprise one of the largest single files in J. Edgar Hoover's collection. Her affiliation with liberal groups such as the American Youth Congress, as well as her outspokenness about segregation and lynching and her assertions for free speech combined to render her in the minds of conservatives such as Hoover as a threat to the status quo in American society. The 3,000-page FBI file contains charges against her for suspected Communist activities, threats to her life on the grounds of her disloyalty to the country, close monitoring of her activities and writings, and a record of possible insurrectionary groups that she may have influenced. Eleanor denounced the ways by which Hoover's FBI procured its information as "Gestapo-ish" and wrote outraged letters protesting the investigations of her friends and even of her personal secretary. Yet despite her protestations, her "file" would continue to grow until her death.
