Who knows what Language?

Post by firend »

Just for fun, what languages do we all know, or are atleast seriously getting to know?

Not sure how to answer that. I'm fluent in American. I know enough England English that, in some places, I wouldn't be lost.

I have seriously studied Spanish and French, but don't know much Spanish. I would like to count them in the survey.

I have dabbled in Irish Gaelic, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Swedish, Italian, American Sign Language, and Pig Latin (we really cannot forget that one). I may be forgetting one.

I wish I could take classes in all of them (well, except Pig Latin) but the local college doesn't offer classes in all of them, and the cost of books in the classes they do offer, are ridiculous.

Also, I have made up at least two languages since I was 14 years old. (One was more like a cryptogram.)

I speak American English, fairly decent Spanish, and I'm very fluent in sarcasm.

Spanish, English, and I was able to speak simple conversations/missionary lessons in Kuna by the time I finished the mission. But after 1.5 years of not speaking it regularly, I'm forgetting it rather quickly. Last week I picked up my Kuna-Spanish dictionary to remember some words and phrases because my wife and I would like to build a house in Kuna Yala sometime in the future. :) Paradise.

American English and French. I signed up for Russian in college, however when I showed up for class on the first day, the instructor was speaking in Russian and only half the class understood. I was in the half that had a bewildered look on the face. The prof then explained that the beginning class had been canceled and this was a second year class. That was the extent of my Russian learning. Unfortunately I never was able to take the beginning class. I did minor in French though and spoke it on my mission.

American English is my mother tongue with the regional dialect, if you will, being that of PA/NY/NJ. Fuhgettaboutit.

I'm not fluent, but I know a fair amount of French, and some Spanish.

Currently, I feel a tremendous pull to learn Chinese, specifically Cantonese. I'm trying to find a way to learn it, though support for the language appears to be waning.

I have very much enjoyed the time I've spent learning Japanese, Mandarin, Latin, Russian, Irish, German, Korean, Greek, Arabic, and Hindi. (A lot of that exposure comes courtesy of Mango languages http://www.mangolanguages.com.)

I'm not too big on artificial languages, but Klingon is pretty cool. :ymblushing:

English of course as well as some Swedish. I can get by in Danish Icelandic and Norwegian as well as they are all closely related to Swedish. Also Afrikaans in a pinch.
