Thanks - I'd be laughing at it too if it weren't so true and sad.HeirofNumenor wrote:=))

The Native American's had a very facscinating culture. They had no concept of property rights, nationalism, or rape. Western civilization took over and turned their world upside down so fast it made their heads spin. When you look at our civilization from a position of objectivity, there's a degree of insanity to it all. Most citizens in our culture spend most of their day doing work they hate to buy things they don't need. Natives inherently have a lot of wisdom in some subjects. They were closer to nature, and nature speaks to men's souls. Who's to say they weren't happier living their hunter-gatherer lifestyle than we are now? When an Indian speaks, we need to listen.

Amen! I love Native Americans and have found many of them to be wonderful people. Their culture sure seems to be full of spirituality as well and that is one attribute I admire about them. To be honest, I don't know how anyone can be prejudice or a racist against a specific group of people or worse, based upon the color of their skin when we're all different with each individual having a different heart, personality, attitude and outlook on life. #-o X( Truth be known, if I had been born to this earth 150 years ago, I would have preferred to be born amongst the Lamanites than the white man given the brutality and hostility the white man had towards those with different colored skin and the skills I would have learned among the Indians would have been invaluable. Plus, I would LOVE to have a name like 'Thunder Horse' or 'Soaring Eagle'.Shimdidly wrote:The Native American's had a very facscinating culture. Re: This says it all
Being married to a Lamanite, I have had the opportunity to be exposed to much of their history as well as how they are today. First of all, before Columbus (or whoever) came, they were a warring people amongst the different tribes. Sometimes this gets lost in the "history" telling. In fact, today, various tribes still do not get along with each other. Sometimes it is pretty easy to see how the gospel that they once had, has been corrupted into something else...but it is a testimony builder regarding the fact that they once had it. My husband is not the usual Native American....he does not believe he is owed anything. He says that what happened, happened to his ancestors and there is nothing to be done about it now. He hates the welfare program because of what it has done to his people. When I visit his reservation with him...I...who usually has no trouble talking...am pretty quiet. Sometimes I just want to stand on a soap box and give them what they so desperately need, and that is the Gospel...the answer to all the ills of the world. He claims that a good number of the tribal governments are corrupt. Alcoholism, drug addiction, suicide, abuse, runs heavy on the rez. It truly is sad. If you have ever been to a Pow-Wow and seen the grand entry...it is very moving to see them in all their various regallia...a once proud people...so beaten down. Complete misunderstanding between whites and natives is the culprit. Neither really understood the other. At any rate, it might be interesting to some of you to do your individual research and study regarding the real history. There were good and bad amongst BOTH whites and natives.

Yeah, I know the Indians had their faults as well and that the white man weren't always the violent ones but generally speaking, I think the Indians were victimized much more than the white man were by them.natasha wrote:it might be interesting to some of you to do your individual research and study regarding the real history. Be sure to look at the producers of that history text you must be reading, I think you may have a Disney script confused with Holt or Glencoe (two prominent text books.) I'm guessing Sacagawea wasn't stolen from the Shoshone because the Hidatsa Nation who stole her wanted the secret Shoshone salmon rub recipie. As long back in history as there have been people with male genitalia, there has been rape. No nationalism? Hmm, in the history I've read there have been a lot of times a whole tribe would be pretty much wiped out because another tribe had to show that OUR brand of Native Pride is more macho that YOUR brand of Native Pride.Shimdidly wrote:The Native American's had a very facscinating culture. The Thais have a lot of inherent wisdom in some subjects. So do the Khoi. Yes, many Native cultures have some wisdom others lack, but it's important not to go too far overboard making Dances With Woofs the gauge for why White People are all direct spawn of satan.Natives inherently have a lot of wisdom in some subjects.
Would that be the same nature that gives us the natural man, an enemy to God? I am a teacher in a Native Athabascan village. I am very close to nature. You know what I've learned about nature? She's a &!@$#.They were closer to nature, and nature speaks to men's souls.
I'm sorry if I come across as being disrespectful in this, I just see a lot of misinformation bandied about in the name of honoring noble cultures that never did a wrong and were burned at the stake by those horrible White People. Please keep in mind this is coming from someone from a small Alaska town who is half Native himself. I am all for giving credit where it is due, and there are indeed a lot of things to be proud of from some aspects of Native culture, but I've also seen a ridiculous amount of pendulum swing that throws blame and/or praise without regard for truth.
Remember, some of these noble people are directly decended from the Gadianton Robbers.

Re: This says it all
I once attended a scout camp where the camp did a presentation that depicted some of the most murderous American Indian leaders as wonderful examples that should be emulated and worshiped. Talk about a Disney Land version of history...
