List of Books & Movies on Freedom

Post by firefly »

I want a list of good books/movies show how good people faced tyranny in history or in other countries, to go in part with D&C 88:78-79
78 Teach ye diligently and my grace shall attend you, that you may be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand;

79 Of things both in heaven and in the earth, and under the earth; things which have been, things which are, things which must shortly come to pass; things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the nations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms—
Here is my short list:
Books:
Hubener vs. Hitler............................Germany
Fear No Evil: Natan Sharansky.........Russia
Saddam's Secrets: Georges Sada.....Iraq

Movies:
Life is Beautiful.................................Germany
Empire of the Sun.............................Japan (Set in Shanghai)
Saints and Soldiers...........................Germany

I would say some notable exception to the movie list is Schindler's List and Braveheart, which would fall perfectly in this this category but may be a bit graphic. Perhaps the books are good? Can someone recommend a good Wallace book? The Saints and Soldiers is more of a war movie and I'm kind of looking for ones that have a citizen as the central figure heroically facing life under tyranny.

Okay so what do you recommend?
There must be a ones involving China, Vietnam, or Korea.

Movies:

Mortal Storm - 1940 (James Stewart plays role of anti-Nazi farmer)
Meet John Doe - 1941 (manipulation of common people)
You Can't Take It With You - 1938 (Wall St. banker says, "They can't start a war without us.")
Man of Iron - 1981 film directed by Andrzej Wajda (Polish Solidarity movement against Communist rule in Poland) An amazing film!!!

I'll look around for a few books that might be suitable to your request.

My husband recommended a novel by Sinclair Lewis - It Can't Happen Here.

The book describes a 'false flag' event in 1930's United States which leads to US dictatorship. It was written in the 1930's so the idea of 'false flag' events leading to increased government control isn't an unknown stratagem.

Another movie of interest: Keeper of the Flame with Kathryn Hepburn & Spencer Tracy about the exposure of a 'conspiracy' utilizing total social/economic disruption throughout the United States in order to create dictatorship.

History of the German youth resistance called The White Rose:

There was a feature length film made called: The White Rose

Great Stuff!
I've never heard of the white rose story. I read the web page on them and it's pretty amazing stuff. I don't know how they could be so calm. They seem old beyond their years.

Is there any way to see these movies?

The "Guys at the Y" video was pretty funny.

I think that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was a good video about living under tyranny.

Thanks for the good ideas! :)

"The Russions Are Coming" is a light way of portraying the fears that underline the taking of others' freedoms.
A few scenes from it:

While it's a little outside the OP's stated topic, I'd highly recommend A More Perfect Union: America Becomes a Nation. It beautifully tells much of the story about the Constitutional Convention. Thoroughly wonderful movie.

The handle of the original poster reminds me of one of my favorite TV shows that is at least somewhat Freedom themed: Firefly (and the Serenity movie).

Shiny! I'm enough of a Browncoat to think that's what he's referring to.

I liked the show. It has that element returning things to the old west way of life, but in a futuristic world. Where you can't rely on the government to protect you and you're going to need to rely on some of the most strangest characters not because you want to but because you have to.

The name for me though originated from imagining a dark world and my place in it. Insignificant in scale to the world around me but rather than join the darkness, defy it. Maybe that's how the creatures of Firefly came to name their show too.

If anyone's got a ship like that, I would mind a little adventure :ymsmug:

Of course the classic 1984 -- I like the one with Richard Burton in it.

Also, an excellent movie that may show our future more than I would like is "Equilibrium" staring Christian Bale.
