Veterans day was originally called Armistice day, it was a day to observe the ending of war(namely WWI)as a societal value and the terrible toll it took. It was observed on the 11th day of the 11th month on the 11th hour where the bell would toll and people would stand in silence. It now seems to have been morphed into a celebration of war and the war machine in general. Call for peace on veterans day and be prepared to receive a nasty bit of backlash and accusations of being unpatriotic.

Every discussion board topic I see about Veteran's day always devolves into a flame war between the "Go America support our troops YAY" crowd and the "soldiers are all baby killers we should spit on them" crowd.

I wonder if one of the biggest casualties of our current culture is that nobody seems able to see the middle ground anymore, let alone actually take it. You either support the government or you're a conspiracy nutjob/terrorist. You either support environmentalism and believe in global warming or you club baby seals and stomp on hatchling turtles flippering their way to the ocean. You're either with us or against us.

People look at me funny when I say happy armistice day, every year. "It's about our troops, duh!"

Many have sacrificed their lives. ♡

The sad truth is that the soldiers on both sides of WW1 and WW2 were victims of a sociopathic power structure.

Happy Armistice Day. Celebrate peace and remember the dead who died needlessly in unnecessary wars.

I am not sure that the idea of Armistice day is that we should be 'happy'. It's not a festivity, like Christmas or Easter. I think we are merely to remember the dead, and the loss of appallingly young lives, and the sacrifice they made of their today, such that we all should have our tomorrow. If we try to turn this simple remembrance into some political issue, either pro-, or anti-, war, and the powers that be, then I think we are overlooking this simple message of sad sorrow.

We call it Remembrance Day.
But we wouldn't dream of wishing anybody a happy one.
It's a time for sombre reflection and gratitude.
The nation stops to observe 2 minutes silence at 11am.
It's really very moving. In the town centre, in the shops, on the streets...... everything stops.
People just stand where they are in complete silence.
So while I understand the sentiment, I won't wish anyone a happy Armistice/Remembrance day, but I do wish you all a thoughtful and reflective one.

Yes, remember on the 11th month, the 11th day, the 11th hour - a moment of silence for the dead who needlessly died. Very moving that the country comes to a halt at that time.

But also celebrate the armistice, the signing of peace. I know soldiers and citizens did alike. Too bad the name was changed. And hold politicos accountable for their damned lies.
