Overall, the earthquakes have been kind of quiet lately. Does this mean we are geering up for the big one?

The Pacific Plate Jolts The Planet

What’s going on at the Pacific tectonic plate lately? A strong earthquake shook at FOX ISLANDS, ALEUTIAN ISLANDS, ALASKA during 18-Jul-2010, followed by quite a swarm of earthquakes.

I just looked at the number of earthquakes in the region of Alaska, Aleutian Islands, while going back about a month. It looks like on average there has been about one relatively small earthquake every three days, more or less, with the occasional two earthquakes in a day. That is until 18-July when a strong magnitude 6.7 struck the region. Since then there have been many numerous after shocks, many of which are impressive in magnitude, as high as 5.8 as of this post.

What makes this even more interesting is that just seven hours after the 6.7 earthquake, a magnitude 6.9 struck at NEW BRITAIN REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, some 4,600 miles away on the other side of the ‘Pacific Ring Of Fire’, the Pacific tectonic plate. Then, just 31 minutes later, boom, a magnitude 7.3 struck at nearly the same location. Wow, there are serious forces at work here.

I’ve plotted the location of the earthquakes, illustrating the distance between them while also showing the direction of movement of the Pacific tectonic plate. It seems like one side popping in Alaska may have stressed the other side such that it also needed to move in New Guinea. It also may be coincidence, but something tells me otherwise…

Does it feel like to you that there has been increasing earth movements lately? It does to me. I’ve previously reported on the statistics of magnitude 5.0 and higher with regards to historical occurrences, and the frequency of occurrence is definitely up so far this year, 2010. We will see how the rest of the year averages out, while I expect to do a new analysis during early August.

Hold on to your hats..

You are responsible for yourself, and therefore it is your responsibility to check your preparedness plans for you (and your family). Please, do yourself a favor, store some extra food and water.

Thanks for the catch, smallfarm.

What is a bit surprising is how Shallow this quake is, in this subduction-zone region... worth double-checking the seismographic pattern...

This from cnn:

The quake struck 233 miles west-southwest of Hagatna, Guam, and was 2.9 miles deep in the earth's crust.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
NEW: No immediate reports of damage, casualties
Earthquake hits south of the Mariana Islands early Saturday
No tsunami warning has been issued
The islands are made up of two U.S. territories

(CNN) -- A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck south of the Mariana Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Mariana Islands -- an archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean -- are made up of two U.S. territories, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The islands sit about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning after the quake, which struck at 7:19 a.m. Saturday (5:19 p.m. ET Friday).
"We wouldn't expect any kind of significant tsunami for this event," said the center's director, Charles McCreery, noting that the quake's magnitude was relatively low to provoke one.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, emergency management officials said.
The quake struck about 375 kilometers (233 miles) west-southwest of Hagatna, Guam, and 445 kilometers (276 miles) west-southwest of Rota, Northern Mariana Islands.
It ran 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) deep.

Samoan quake was actually three seismic events, according to study led by University of Utah

Published: Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 8:20 a.m. MDT
SALT LAKE CITY — The physical evidence a criminal leaves behind can tell the story of what happened and, sometimes most importantly, what did not.
The same is true for charting the physical characteristics of an earthquake — discrepancies may be uncovered that paint a new picture of what happened.
A study led in part by the head of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations shows that last year's earthquake in Samoa, America Samoa and Tonga was not just one seismic event, but a trio of temblors.
"At first, we thought it was one earthquake," said the U.'s Keith Koper, co-author of the study to be published in the Thursday issue of the journal Nature. "When we looked at the data, it turned out it wasn't just one great earthquake, but three large earthquakes that happened within two minutes of one another. The two quakes that were hidden by the first quake ended up being responsible for some of the damage and tsunami waves."
The quakes on Sept. 29, 2009, generated tsunami waves that varied in height depending on where they struck. In some places the water reached more than 49 feet above sea level. The disaster left 149 people dead in Samoa and killed 34 people in American Samoa and nine on Niuatoputapu, an island in the northern part of Tonga.
Koper said in terms of energy release, the two magnitude-7.8 quakes combined represented another magnitude-8 quake.
"It was essentially a great earthquake that was triggered," he said. "It was not some silly little aftershock."
Koper, a seismologist and associate professor of geology and geophysics at the U., said scientists became suspicious that the Samoa-Tonga quake wasn't a single quake when they noticed a discrepancy in so-called "beach balls," which are graphical depictions of fault motions during a quake.
"It was a real interesting detective story," he said. "When we first looked at this, we knew there were some inconsistencies. We just couldn't explain the seismograms with one earthquake, so we knew there was a problem."
One clue in the unfolding mystery was that the location of the "first" magnitude-8.1 quake did not account for the pattern of tsunami waves and how they varied in height in various areas.

Koper said the first person to suggest more than one quake was Chen Ji, a California researcher who argued at a scientific meeting last December that the Samoa quake hid a separate quake. That prompted the new study.
As the research progressed, scientists began to unravel an "opposite" pattern of seismic behavior — unveiling the first known case of an earthquake occurring on the plate of the Earth's crust beneath the ocean, and then triggering two major "thrust" quakes in the subduction zone. That zone is where the edge of a crustal plate is forced below another.
Koper said that by showing that outer-rise normal quakes can trigger subduction-zone quakes, "this study will affect the way earthquake and tsunami hazards are calculated, not just in this region, but potentially in other places around the world."
The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey funded the study, which was led by seismologist Thorne Lay of the University of California, Santa Cruz. In addition to Utah's Koper, other co-authors are seismologists Charles Ammon of Pennsylvania State University, Hiroo Kanamori of the California Institute of Technology, Luis Rivera of the University of Strasbourg in France and Alexander Hutko of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology's Seattle data center.

This discovery may open further doors -- for it shows, for the "first known case" that a quake in the crust [which could have been generated] triggers two major thrust quakes in the subduction zone, that is, the shallow quake releases the energy stored in the subduction zone, thus causing two life-taking huge earthquakes. This is just the pattern expected for man-engineered earthquakes as discussed earlier in this thread (and in my recent lecture at the Salt Lake Community College).
"scientists began to unravel an "opposite" pattern of seismic behavior — unveiling the first known case of an earthquake occurring on the plate of the Earth's crust beneath the ocean, and then triggering two major "thrust" quakes in the subduction zone."

My kudos for the scientists who ferreted this result out... Now, if they will look at the possibility that the first crustal quake was generated!

Stay tuned.

In related news, Steve, check this out:

http://www.rferl.org/content/Russian_Sc ... 14381.html
As Muscovites suffer record high temperatures this summer, a Russian political scientist has claimed the United States may be using climate-change weapons to alter the temperatures and crop yields of Russia and other Central Asian countries.

In a recent article, Andrei Areshev, deputy director of the Strategic Culture Foundation, wrote, "At the moment, climate weapons may be reaching their target capacity and may be used to provoke droughts, erase crops, and induce various anomalous phenomena in certain countries."

The article has been carried by publications throughout Russia, including "International Affairs," a journal published by the Foreign Ministry and by the state-owned news agency RIA Novosti.

In an telephone interview with RFE/RL, Areshev appeared to back off from claims he made in the article, saying that he was merely positing a theory.

"First of all, I would like to say that what I wrote in that article, even the citations, does not in any way claim to a be final truth. It is, if you will, speculation, in other words, the definition of an hypothesis," Areshev said.

Moscow is currently sweltering under record temperatures. On July 29 Moscow suffered its hottest day ever, with temperatures hitting 39 degrees.

But Russia isn't the only country suffering form a heat wave this summer. Indeed, the United States is also experiencing record temperatures. On July 24, temperatures in Washington, D.C., hit 37.7 degrees, and local weather services issued heat warnings for the first time this summer.

Areshev agrees that it is also hot in the United States, but notes that the United States is significantly farther south than Russia, meaning that such high temperatures are not so surprising there.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, however, announced in July that land and ocean temperatures throughout the world were the highest ever, since they began tracking global temperatures in 1880.

Conspiracy Theories

In the article, Areshev voiced suspicions about the High-Frequency Active Aural Research Program (HAARP), funded by the U.S. Defense Department and the University of Alaska.

HAARP, which has long been the target of conspiracy theorists, analyzes the ionosphere and seeks to develop technologies to improve radio communications, surveillance, and missile detection.

Areshev writes, however, that its true aim is to create new weapons of mass destruction "in order to destabilize environmental and agricultural systems in local countries."

Areshev's article also references an unmanned spacecraft X-37B, an orbital test vehicle the Pentagon launched in April 2010. The Pentagon calls X-37B a prototype for a new "space plane" that could take people and equipment to and from space stations. Areshev, however, alleges that the X-378 carries "laser weaponry" and could be a key component in the Pentagon's climate-change arsenal.

The Pentagon was not immediately reachable for comment.

Areshev also cites the U.S. government's effort to use rain and cloud coverage to block the Vietnam Army's supply routes during the Vietnam War. He insisted, however, that he was not a conspiracy theorist.

"My comments were not made in order to accuse the U.S., or any other country, of consciously influencing Russia," Areshev said. "That would be quite ridiculous."

Asked whether or not Russia was also experimenting with climate-control methods, Areshev said since he was not a member of the government, he did not have information about such projects.

Yes, very interesting, Colonel. He left it as an hypothesis -- what is needed is data, such as we are getting with earthquakes.

I'm surprised he spoke up in that way without first accumulating a lot of evidence...
For example, with regard to 9/11 and challenging the official story, I first accumulated evidence, then had it peer-reviewed, and finally published in established technical journals.

The initiated-earthquake research I'm doing is in the early stages, gathering data and seeking review.

Actually, the existence of high-tech earthquake and climate weapons has been admitted to by high-profile former figures in the military and 'government'. I'm also like you... a little perplexed that the Russian government hasn't come out accusing the U.S. of a massive cover-up regarding the truth about 9/11. There is no doubt in my mind they know what it was all about and the silliness of the official story. Thing is, who knows how many false flag ops they've been involved in over the years that the U.S. could blow the whistle on as well. It's essentially a 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' situation.
