ready2prepare, if we notice a swarm of quakes by Mammoth Lake, I'm wondering if a volcano is waking up. You just never know what's around the bend anymore......

Other quakes of interest:

FYI: These are on the New Madrid fault line, which has been
getting lots of smaller quakes lately in divers places:

2.5 2009/10/26 12:47:31 35.242 -92.422 0.1km ARKANSAS
2.7 2009/10/26 11:43:22 36.420 -90.927 16.2km ARKANSAS
2.9 2009/10/26 02:54:16 35.259 -92.403 5.0km ARKANSAS

A couple more New Madrid zone quakes from yesterday:

2.0 2009/10/25 18:47:01 35.772 -84.082 19.4km EASTERN TENNESSEE
2.3 2009/10/25 17:21:55 37.787 -90.649 1.7km SOUTHEASTERN MISSOURI

The New Madrid fault system, or the New Madrid seismic zone,
is a series of faults beneath the continental crust in a weak spot
known as the Reelfoot Rift. It cannot be seen on the surface.
The fault system extends 150 miles southward from Cairo, Illinois
through New Madrid and Caruthersville, Missouri, down through
Blytheville, Arkansas to Marked Tree, Arkansas. It dips into
Kentucky near Fulton and into Tennessee near Reelfoot Lake,
and extends southeast to Dyersburg, Tennessee. It crosses
five state lines, and crosses the Mississippi River in at least
three places."

The last major earthquakes to rumble the New Madrid zone
were in 1811-1812, 1843, and 1895. Since then thousands
of smaller earthquakes, 2.0 or less, have kept the fault active.
These smaller earthquakes are not enough from keeping a
bigger one from happening and scientists believe that a
magnitude 6.0 or greater is possible within our children's lifetime.

Re: EARTHQUAKES!

Thank you, Sharon, for keeping us posted on earthquakes.

From wikipedia:
December 16, 1811, 1415 UTC (8:15 a.m.); (MMS=8.2[3]) moment magnitude scale; epicenter in northeast Arkansas; This shock followed the first earthquake by six hours.
January 23, 1812, 1500 UTC (9 a.m.); (MMS=8.1[3]) moment magnitude scale; epicenter in the Missouri Bootheel. The meizoseismal area was characterized by general ground warping, ejections, fissuring, severe landslides, and caving of stream banks. Johnson and Schweig attributed this earthquake to a rupture on the New Madrid North Fault. This may have placed strain on the Reelfoot Fault. [2]

February 7, 1812, 0945 UTC (4:45 a.m.); (MMS=8.3[3]) moment magnitude scale; epicenter near New Madrid, Missouri. New Madrid was destroyed. At St. Louis, Missouri, many houses were severely damaged, and their chimneys were toppled. This shock was definitively attributed to the Reelfoot Fault by Johnston and Schweig. It was uplift along this reverse fault segment, in this event, that created waterfalls on the Mississippi River, disrupted the Mississippi River at Kentucky bend, created a wave that propagated upstream and caused the formation of Reelfoot Lake. [2]
The earthquakes were felt as far away as New York City and Boston, Massachusetts, where church bells rang.[4]

Some sections of the Mississippi River appeared to run backward for a short time. Sand blows were common throughout the area, and can still be seen from the air in cultivated fields. Church bells were reported to ring as far as Boston, Massachusetts and York, Ontario (now Toronto) and sidewalks were reported to have been cracked and broken in Washington, D.C.[5] There were also reports of toppled chimneys in Maine.
Eliza Bryan[6] in New Madrid, Territory of Missouri, wrote the following eyewitness account in March, 1812.
On the 16th of December, 1811, about two o'clock, A.M., we were visited by a violent shock of an earthquake, accompanied by a very awful noise resembling loud but distant thunder, but more hoarse and vibrating, which was followed in a few minutes by the complete saturation of the atmosphere, with sulphurious vapor, causing total darkness. The screams of the affrighted inhabitants running to and fro, not knowing where to go, or what to do - the cries of the fowls and beasts of every species - the cracking of trees falling, and the roaring of the Mississippi - the current of which was retrogade for a few minutes, owing as is supposed, to an irruption in its bed -- formed a scene truly horrible.
Note that an M=8 earthquake is about 100 times more powerful than an M=6 earthquake.

I am also concerned about recent activity in Yellowstone Park, swelling of the magma beneath this Hot Spot.

http://www.myeyewitnessnews.com/mostpop ... bF6zg.cspx
MEMPHIS, TN – It’s been a busy week on the New Madrid fault. A series of small earthquakes rattled parts of western Tennessee and Arkansas during the last few days. This latest series of quakes has caught the attention of scientists.
"There were several events last week that were in the magnitude 2.5 to 3 range,” explained Tish Tuttle, who works with the Center for Earthquake Research and Information on the University of Memphis campus. "There have been some events up near Tiptonville. And those earthquakes are in the range of magnitude of one and a half, to two.”

That’s not unusual for western Tennessee.

"There are a number of faults in that region including western Tennessee, southern Missouri, southeast Missouri and northeast Arkansas that produce small events on a regular basis,” Tuttle said. "In the New Madrid region in general, there are about 200 earthquakes per year. The majority of them are small, small enough that you wouldn't feel them."

Seismologist Steve Horton is keeping a close eye on those earthquakes. He traveled to Conway, Arkansas, last weekend in hopes of tracking any more movement along the fault.

“This will help us understand what's generating those earthquakes,” said Horton, Tuttle's colleague at the Center for Earthquake Research and Information. "There's been a history of seismic activity in that general vicinity, so that's no surprise to have earthquakes there."

Tuttle said researchers can't predict when earthquakes will strike, but they can try to prepare for what lies ahead:

“Those estimates are that for a magnitude 6 to 6.5 earthquake, there is a 25 to 40 percent chance of such an event occurring over the next 50 years,” she said.

Tuttle said the last major earthquakes to hit the New Madrid rolled through in 1811 and 1812. The strongest reached a magnitude of 7.5, with aftershocks felt as far away as St. Louis.

That earthquake zone will be the focus of a conference in Memphis next week. Researchers and seismologists from across the country will talk about how to respond to earthquakes. It's scheduled to take place at the University of Memphis.

Just Released to the Public:

What would happen if a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Seattle?

This is the best earthquake simulation I have ever seen: much
better than Hollywood; much more detailed; and a lot scarier
because this "movie" was produced by the Washington State
Department of Transportation and never intended for public
viewing. Take a look and you'll see why:
