Extreme weather:
(CNN) -- Every state in the Union had a reporting station somewhere in the state below freezing Tuesday morning.

That includes Hawaii,
where the temperature at Mauna Kea on the Big Island dropped to 31 degrees.

In Florida, it was in the upper 20s in the Panhandle and freeze warnings were in effect.

Tuesday was the coldest November morning since 1976, according to meteorologist Ryan Maue of WeatherBELL Analytics. The average overnight low for the Lower 48 states was 19.4 degrees, Maue said.
Second round of arctic air is coming
Winter blast continues through Midwest
Why is it so cold?

This is highly unusual for this time of year and is much more reminiscent of a pattern forecasters would expect to see in January or February, not November.

The Arctic air pouring over the relatively warm Great Lakes waters is producing extreme lake-effect snows.

Snow totals could approach 70 inches south of Buffalo -- almost 6 feet of snow. Lancaster, New York, has already received over 40 inches of snow, and it continues to snow at 4 to 5 inches per hour. Some areas in Erie County, Pennsylvania, have already seen 3 feet of snow. Thunder and lightning have been reported.

To make matters worse, this is only the first band of heavy snow. More snow is expected on Wednesday, and then the lake-effect snow bands set up again for Wednesday night into Thursday with very heavy snow likely again. This could rank high in the history of lake-effect snow events.

Over half the country -- 50.2% -- had snow on the ground Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Here in northern Arizona we got down to 12 on Monday morning.

T OKYO – Helicopter surveys on Sunday showed more extensive damage than earlier thought from an overnight earthquake in the mountainous central Japan area that hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics.

At least 37 homes were destroyed in two villages, and 39 people were injured across the region, including seven seriously, mostly with broken bones, officials said.

The magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck shortly after 10 p.m. (8 a.m. EST) Saturday west of Nagano city at a depth of 6 miles, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency revised the magnitude from a preliminary 6.8 while the U.S. Geological Survey measured it at 6.2. Since the quake occurred inland, there was no possibility of a tsunami.

Ryo Nishino, a restaurant owner in Hakuba, a ski resort village west of Nagano, told Japanese broadcaster NHK that he had "never experienced a quake that shook so hard. The sideways shaking was enormous." He said he was in the restaurant's wine cellar when the quake struck, and that nothing broke there.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said no abnormalities were reported at three nuclear power plants in the affected areas. All of Japan's nuclear plants are offline following a magnitude-9.0 earthquake and massive tsunami in 2011 that sent three reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant into meltdown. Fukushima is about 155 miles northeast of where Saturday's earthquake occurred.

The hardest-hit area appeared to be Hakuba, which hosted events in the 1998 games. At least 30 homes were destroyed, and 17 people injured, the Nagano prefecture government said. Another seven homes were lost in Otari, a nearby village to the north. Non-residential buildings were also destroyed, with officials still assessing the extent.

Japanese television footage showed buildings in various states of collapse, some flattened and others leaning to one side, and deep cracks in the roads. A landslide spilled onto a railroad track, forcing service to stop. About 200 people have evacuated to shelters, almost all from Hakuba and Otari.

Shigeharu Fujimori, a Nagano prefecture disaster management official, said it was fortunate there haven't been any deaths reported despite the extent of the damage.

All 21 people trapped under collapsed houses were rescued, with two of them injured, the National Police Agency told Japan's Kyodo news agency. Japanese television showed police going house to house Sunday morning, calling out to make sure that inhabitants were accounted for.

"The hardest-hit area was in the mountains and sparsely populated, where neighbors have a close relationship and help each other," Fujimori said. "So I don't think anyone has been forgotten or left isolated."

Shinkansen bullet train service in the region was restored after a short interruption. Chubu Electric Power Co. said 200 homes were still without power on Sunday.

The quake was followed by more than 45 aftershocks, and Meteorological Agency official Yohei Hasegawa urged residents to watch out for landslides. The area was struck by a magnitude-6.7 earthquake the day after the huge March 2011 quake.

Same time as the recent earthquake in Japan, there was one in China and one in Romania, all over 5 mag. The plot thickens.

Thanks SmallFarm,

My brother lives in Camp Verde, and they felt it pretty strong. The whole house shook, but there was no damage.

I do not like earthquakes, they cause me to run "lickety-split", or to "suck" up to something for stability, or to hear the loud "rock and roll'. And it's really difficult to put the "bounce" into the cloths dryer. I also get real "shaky". They can help one "move" the car, however. It is no fun during an earthquake to be listening to "Jump" by Van Halen. And do not "fall" down, it can be "strikingly" detrimental. And don't "bump" into a wall. They also make people wobble "to and fro". The thought of having an earthquake is a "stumbling" idea.

Is there any more wise "cracks" that could be listed?

You may be right. They cause me to get "puffed up" to the point of almost "falling apart". :))

Even in Idaho:
Idaho earthquake causes rock slides, damages property

By Laura Zuckerman7 hours ago

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A moderate earthquake rattled a broad swath of Idaho early on Saturday, damaging property and triggering rock slides near its epicenter in Challis, a city that has endured hundreds of slight to moderate temblors over the last 10 months, authorities said.
The latest measured at a magnitude of 4.9 and was centered about four miles (6.5 km) from Challis in the state's central mountains, but was felt as far away as Boise, a 190-mile (305-km) drive to the southwest, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake caused rock slides, damaged homes and knocked out power around Custer County, local officials said.

Challis Mayor Mark Lupher said he was not in the area when the quake struck, but that authorities told him by telephone that there were no known injuries. Several people living close to the epicenter reported property damage such as cracks in the walls of their homes, he said.
The latest in a string temblors to rattle the area, the quake was more powerful than recent ones, including a 2.9 magnitude quake on Dec. 29, the USGS and Challis Messenger weekly newspaper said.

"We've been around the block a few times," Linda Lumpkin, Custer County Sheriff's Office dispatch supervisor in Challis, said of the frequent seismic activity.
Still, she said, the shaking on Saturday went on for a good nine or ten seconds, leaving people feeling a little rattled.
The dispatch center has been flooded with calls from residents reporting shaking and rock slides, said Lumpkin.
Scientists have been trying to determine whether the quakes, which began in March 2014, have been caused by a known fault thought to be dormant, or are from a previously unknown fault. The earthquakes have been centered near where Idaho's most powerful known quake, measured at 6.9, killed two children in 1983.

Idaho is at the center of a seismic belt that runs from northwestern Montana to southern Nevada and contains thousands of faults in the Earth's crust.
Scientists have said they do not believe the smaller quakes were leading to a larger event in the area.
Claudia Whitten, a glass artist who lives near downtown Challis, said her home shook on its foundation during the 4.9 magnitude event.
"This one really got me. You could feel it in your feet. My whole body was shaking," she said.
Authorities have warned motorists in the area to watch out for falling or loose rocks.

4.6 Earthquake strikes off west coast of Vancouver Island
The Canadian Press
Published Thursday, January 8, 2015 8:21AM EST

TOFINO, B.C. -- Houses shook, dishes broke and some residents of Tofino, B.C., thought an explosion or car accident occurred, but there was no tsunami or major damage reported by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake.

Earthquakes Canada, the federal agency that monitors the natural phenomenon across the country, said the quake hit just after 6 p.m. Wednesday local time about 13 kilometres east of the tourism community of Tofino, B.C.

Tofino Mayor Josie Osborne said the quake was the strongest she has felt in the community and it lasted about one or two seconds.

"It's a really good reminder that we need to be prepared," she said.

A series of eight earthquakes shook Oregon's southern border Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The temblors ranged in magnitude from 2.5 to 4.5 and were centered in rural Nevada, between 41 and 48 miles east-southeast of the small town of Lakeview, Oregon.
The strongest of the quakes, at 4.5 magnitude, struck at 1:09 a.m. Thursday. According to the USGS's site for earthquake-reporting, only about four people reported feeling the strongest of the earthquakes.
Since July 12, an earthquake swarm has been shaking lightly populated northwest Nevada and southern Oregon. As of early December, more than 1,700 quakes had been reported in the area.

He's using EQ3D Steve. I've been expecting a large EQ on the East Coast, I expect it to happen in very frigid weather.

There have been: (M1.5 or greater)

83 earthquakes today
569 earthquakes in the past 7 days
2,839 earthquakes in the past month
38,182 earthquakes in the past year

The biggest earthquake:

today: 6.7 in Villazón, Potosi, Bolivia
this week: 6.7 in Villazón, Potosi, Bolivia
this month: 6.8 in Vila, Efate, Vanuatu
this year: 8.2 in Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile

I managed to download archived data from the usgs earthquake website. I'm still looking at the data from as many angles as I can, but looking at various sums from year to year from 1950 to 2014, I can definitely say that there has been an increase in frequency of earthquakes. We all knew that intuitively, of course, but now I have the data to back up my conclusions.

A sum of quakes of magnitudes greater than 2.5 from 1973 to 2014 revealed a general rise from 4356 per year to 25,007 per year. That's big.

There was an anomaly in the data where there were no quakes of magnitudes less than 4.5 recorded before 1973. That smelled off to me, so I found this article on the history of seismographs:

Seems the 1970's is when we began deploying worldwide earthquake monitoring systems.

I suspect it is better reporting.

That is one possible explanation. But I can tell you this much, better reporting should not lead to data trending upward for the next few decades, as it appears the case is. Better reporting would affect data in the short term, then stabilize. I'm looking at the data right now, it is anything but stable.

The data below is a small subset of my analysis, a count of earthquakes of magnitudes 2.5 or greater by year. Remember, the jump from 1972 to 1973 is potentially explained by the deployment of a worldwide seismograph network that year. As for the rest of the data after 1973....I'll let you decide what to make of it.
