(CNN) -- Northern California's biggest earthquake in 25 years has people asking: Is the world seeing more tremors than usual? And is the long-dreaded "Big One" that could devastate California coming soon?
Actually, experts say the world might not be seeing more than usual. And as for the Big One, there's no sign that it's imminent.
The infamous San Andreas Fault is due for its epic every-150-years rumble. But the quake that struck Sunday, centered about 6 miles southwest of Napa, wasn't on that line.
"I don't think we can make any connection on that," CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said. "This is on a different fault -- still part of the same system, still the plates are still shifting from California, the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate."
Nye: 'Unlikely' big quake still serious
More quakes in 2014?
6.0-magnitude quake shakes California 5 most powerful recorded earthquakes
The Federal Emergency Management Agency offers a number of tips on what to do if you are in an earthquake, including preparations you can make before it hits:

BEFORE

• Have an emergency kit with food, water for 72+ hours.
• Find safe spots in each room under a table or against an inside wall.
• Hold regular drills.

DURING

• If indoors, remember drop, cover and hold on.
• Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors, walls.
• Stay inside until shaking stops.
• If outdoors, stay there, away from buildings, streetlights and wires.

AFTER

• Expect aftershocks.

• If trapped under debris, tap on a pipe or wall.
Peru, California, Chile and Iceland have all been hit by notable earthquakes in 2014, which has some wondering whether there have been an unusually large amount of strong earthquakes this year.

The rate of major earthquakes -- those with a magnitude higher than 7.0 -- more than doubled in the first quarter of 2014 compared with the average since 1979, according to a paper published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters in June by Tom Parsons and Eric L. Geist of the U.S. Geological Survey.
But a time period of fewer than 50 years isn't a large enough sample size to definitively say whether this year has had an abnormal number of quakes. It could be a statistical anomaly, according to CNN meteorologist Sean Morris.
"It's such a small sample and short time frame; let's not get alarmed," Myers said.
The Geological Survey notes that many earthquakes go undetected "because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes."
There has been a greater amount of smaller temblors in the central United States, especially in Oklahoma, which experts say could be a result of fracking in the area.
In June, Oklahoma surpassed California in the number of earthquakes this year.
"When they first started happening, they were a big deal," said Althea Peterson, a reporter with the Tulsa World. "It's nothing I ever expected in Oklahoma."
When will the 'Big One' strike?
Catastrophic earthquakes seem to strike along the southern San Andreas Fault about once every 150 years, the U.S. Geological Survey said, citing studies examining the past 1,400 years. The last time an enormous temblor on the fault struck Southern California was in 1857.
"There's a real likelihood of a major, major earthquake in the next 10, 15, 20 years," California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom said.
Newsom is former mayor of San Francisco, a city that sits near the Hayward Fault and the San Andreas Fault, "the one that fear is most instilled in us."
But the San Francisco Bay Area is less likely to see a massive earthquake soon, as only about a century has passed since the great 1906 earthquake.
Yet "moderate-sized, potentially damaging earthquakes could occur in this area at any time," the Geological Survey warmed.
In 1989, a 6.9-magnitude quake struck the Bay Area during baseball's World Series. The Loma Prieta earthquake caused 63 deaths, 3,757 injuries and an estimated $6 billion in property damage, according to the Geological Survey.
What about the 1994 Northridge quake?
That mammoth tremor wasn't on the San Andreas Fault; it actually occurred on a fault that no one knew about.
That 6.7-magnitude Southern California quake killed 57 people and caused $42 billion in total damage.
But even the Northridge quake could pale in comparison to the devastation that the "Big One" on the San Andreas could bring.
"It would be like having a Northridge here and Northridge here and Northridge here," Caltech seismologist Kate Hutton said this year, indicating swaths of a California map. "It covers such a wide area that it would be ... a major disaster for the nation."
Six things we've learned since 1994 Northridge earthquake
Why is the San Andreas Fault so notorious?
The San Andreas is considered "the 'master' fault of an intricate fault network," the Geological Survey said. It's the fault responsible for the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which killed about 700 people.
The 800-mile-long fault is the boundary between the Pacific Plate and North American Plate. And because the Pacific Plate shifts about 2 inches a year, the Geological Survey said, Los Angeles and San Francisco will become next-door neighbors (though not for about 15 million years).
So while it's impossible for the San Andreas to sweep California out into the ocean, the Geological Survey said, southwestern California is slowly -- very slowly -- sliding past the rest of the state toward Alaska.

LONDON (AP) — Earthquakes are rocking Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano, adding to concerns that magma movements may trigger an eruption that could hinder air traffic.

Iceland's Met Office says two earthquakes measuring over magnitude 5 shook the volcano under the vast Vatnajokull glacier on Wednesday. Some 500 quakes have hit the area since midnight.

Iceland's aviation alert level remains at orange, the second highest. On Sunday, the Met Office lowered the alert level, saying there was no sign of an imminent eruption at Bardarbunga.

In 2010, Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul volcano erupted and sparked off a week of international aviation chaos. Some 100,000 flights were cancelled after aviation officials closed Europe's air space for five days out of fear that volcanic ash could harm jet engines.

More on the drought in Calif...
Recall what Yohani Wolfrgram said?
NaturalNews) Water wells in central California have begun to run dry, reports the LA Times. (1) "Extreme drought conditions have become so harsh for the Central Valley community of East Porterville [that] many of its residents dependent on their own wells have run out of water."

Tulare County has confirmed their wells have run out of water, and so far hundreds of homes have no running water.

According to the LA Times, rumors are also spreading that Child Protective Services officials will begin taking children away from families who have no running water, although the county claims the rumor is false.

It begins: the collapse of California's water aquifers

With this news, it is now official that the collapse of California's water aquifers has begun. With each passing month and year, more and more wells will run dry across the state as California plummets into the desert conditions from which it once sprang.

Extreme drought now covers 82% of California, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center. (2) Fifty-eight percent of the state is in "exceptional drought."

During the unfolding of this drought, California farmers and cities have siphoned unprecedented volumes of water out of the state's underground aquifers. This is called "fossil water" and it can take centuries to regenerate. Once this fossil water is used up, it's gone.

35-year "megadrought" may be on the way

"The southwestern United States has fifty percent change of suffering a 'megadrought' that lasts 35 years," reports the Daily Mail. (3)

"They say global warming has meant the chance of a decade long drought is at least 50 percent, and the chances of a 'megadrought' – one that lasts up to 35 years – ranges from 20 to 50 percent over the next century."

One scientist is quoted in the story as saying, "This will be worse than anything seen during the last 2,000 years and would pose unprecedented challenges to water resources in the region."

Unless politicians become magical wizards and figure out a way to create water out of nothing, what all this really means is that cities of the American southwest will not be able to support present-day populations. A mass migration (evacuation) out of the cities will be necessary sooner or later.

California's water deficit will lead to ecological and economic collapse

In an almost perfect reflection of California's state budget deficits, the state is also running an unsustainable water deficit. It is a mathematical certainty that when you remove far more water from the aquifers than is being replenished, the amount of water remaining in those aquifers will eventually reach zero.

This "zero day" water reality is still psychologically denied by most Californians. If the reality of this situation were widely recognized, California would be experiencing a glut of real estate inventory as millions of homeowners tried to sell their properties and evacuate the state. The fact that the real estate market has not yet collapsed in California tells us that Californians are still living in a state of denial about the future of their water supply.

Even as California's water supply collapses by the day, local farmers and towns have few options other than drilling for more water. "Drill! Drill! Drill!" is the mantra of the day, creating an 18-month backlog for well drilling companies. Each new well that's drilled must seek to go deeper than the previous wells which are running dry. It's a literal race to the bottom which can only end in catastrophe.

Re: Californians --
Dear NaturalNews readers,

Millions of California residents are about to be hit with strict water rationing enforced with huge fines. In one district, the new limit is 50 gallons per person, per day -- a sharp reduction from current consumption.

The California government even promises to use satellite photography to determine how much water your landscaping "should" be using, and you'll be heavily fined for exceeding that allocation:

Possible I suppose, but the swarm is well away from the Pacific subduction zones--- But then so is Yellowstone! Article explains that it is deep ground water causing the plates to slip, I.E lubrication!

(Reuters) - An earthquake swarm that started rocking a secluded region in northwest Nevada this summer intensified over the past week, geology officials said on Wednesday.

The swarm, centered just off the state's northwest border some 40 miles (65 km) southeast of Lakeview, Oregon, started July 12 and is being caused by stretching of the Earth's crust, said Graham Kent, the director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The laboratory said in a statement that two magnitude 4.7 quakes, and over 50 magnitude 3 or stronger temblors have occurred over the past week, representing more seismic activity than in recent months combined.

"I've talked to people whose houses are very near this epicenter, and they are already getting shaken up," Kent said, though he added that the area is sparsely populated.

Kent said it would likely take significantly stronger quakes to damage nearby structures or surrounding communities.

The Laboratory said there have been 101 tremors of a magnitude 3 or larger, and eight that clocked in at a magnitude 4 or stronger since the swarm first appeared.

Following swarms like these there is a slight increase in the likelihood that a larger earthquake will happen, the Laboratory said, though it is impossible to predict whether such a quake would occur.

The current swarm resembles one that happened in Reno, Nevada, in 2008 that shook the area over a two-month stretch with increasingly strong temblors leading to a magnitude 5 quake that caused moderate damage in the area, the Laboratory said.

The one listed above in Kansas yesterday was I think in the afternoon. We didn't feel it, but then I was driving at the time. However, we felt what I assume is an aftershock last night at 9:35. The whole house rumbled and it felt and sounded like there was a sub-woofer under my seat. We are an hour south of Kansas City. First time I've felt a quake at all after living in the Kansas City area for over 20 years.

I live NE of KC, roughly 100 miles. Didn't feel the quake. Some day I expect the New Madrid, MO, fault to slip; but that's in the opposite corner of the state.

I believe the solar physicists are overall correct == the sun cycles in its output of solar energy, and is now (since a few years ago) in a cooling trend/phase. We can expect, I understand, more cold overall in the next dozen years or so.
(CNN) -- Every state in the Union had a reporting station somewhere in the state below freezing Tuesday morning.

That includes Hawaii,
where the temperature at Mauna Kea on the Big Island dropped to 31 degrees.

In Florida, it was in the upper 20s in the Panhandle and freeze warnings were in effect.

Tuesday was the coldest November morning since 1976, according to meteorologist Ryan Maue of WeatherBELL Analytics. The average overnight low for the Lower 48 states was 19.4 degrees, Maue said.
Second round of arctic air is coming
Winter blast continues through Midwest
Why is it so cold?

This is highly unusual for this time of year and is much more reminiscent of a pattern forecasters would expect to see in January or February, not November.

The Arctic air pouring over the relatively warm Great Lakes waters is producing extreme lake-effect snows.

Snow totals could approach 70 inches south of Buffalo -- almost 6 feet of snow. Lancaster, New York, has already received over 40 inches of snow, and it continues to snow at 4 to 5 inches per hour. Some areas in Erie County, Pennsylvania, have already seen 3 feet of snow. Thunder and lightning have been reported.

To make matters worse, this is only the first band of heavy snow. More snow is expected on Wednesday, and then the lake-effect snow bands set up again for Wednesday night into Thursday with very heavy snow likely again. This could rank high in the history of lake-effect snow events.

Over half the country -- 50.2% -- had snow on the ground Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
