In a talk given several times over the last 35 years, President Hinckley amplified the warnings of the Nephite prophets. Paraphrasing him, he said that the Book of Mormon is as “current as the morning newspaper” and that “the people succumbed to the wiles of ambitious and scheming leaders

This was an OUTSTANDING article! I think it was the best one yet that I have seen on that website....I greatly appreciated the detail, context, effort that went into backing up each claim and likening it to ourselves...

Thank you for hosting it on your website, Ben :ymapplause:

A timely article as I finished the chapters in the BoM where Moroni contends with Amaleckiah and then his brother, Ammoron. These two made Zarahmnah look like a saint. Zarahemnah, who was a Lamanite commander that fought and eventually begged for mercy and covenanted with Moroni for peace, was a simple man. Amalickiah, however, was not a Lamanite. He was a Nephite and likely a judge or at least holding a position of government power. He became angry with the new affairs of the church after Alma had passed the government of the church to Helaman. We learn that Kishkumen had tried to assassinate Helaman, but that attempt failed. Amalickiah could well have been part of that plot, but being a robber wasn't his style. He wanted power and control. He wanted to be at the top and it could well be that the tactics he used to rise to power through fraud among the Lamanites, were the same tactics used to attain whatever position of power in the Nephite government he then possessed. I believe he was well practiced in his skill. This was no rookie and no chump. He had a following and he used it to achieve all of his designs, no doubt with his brother Ammoron by his side the entire time, that is, until Teancum came into the picture. What's more sad is the apparent separation of church and state in the Land of Zarahemla and the corruption in both the government and in the church among the priests, high priests, etc.

Ok, forgive my ignorance--I could only find two times--are there other references to regional conference talks, etc.?

Maybe it was more in reference to how many times the talk has been re-published in the Church magazines? (at least three - 1979, 1988, 2005)

The link below will take you to one of my all time favorite talks, "Leaders to Managers" by Hugh Nibley, which is a great companion to the one listed above.
