Re: Fools mock, but they shall mourn..
I have often wondered about these scriptures. The word "mock" in particular. What exactly does Moroni mean by it?
If you look at the footnote for the (c) on the word mock, it will send you to 1Cor. 2:14, which says:25 Thou hast also made our words powerful and great, even that we acannot write them; wherefore, when we write we behold our bweakness, and stumble because of the placing of our words; and I fear lest the Gentiles shall (c)mock at our words.
26 And when I had said this, the Lord spake unto me, saying: Fools bmock, but they shall mourn; and my grace is sufficient for the meek, that they shall take no advantage of your weakness;
The footnote for the word "mock" in Ether corresponds with the footnote (d) on the word foolishness in 1 Cor. So while the word mock could certainly mean "making fun of", I don't think that is the only definition. If the footnotes are to be trusted, then it means that anyone who is still under the power of the natural man, having not been re-born or BF&HG, cannot know the things of God, because they sound foolish to him, thus he misunderstands and misapplies there meaning.14 But the anatural man breceiveth not the things of the cSpirit of God: for they are (d)foolishness unto him: neither can he eknow them, because they are fspiritually gdiscerned.

Re: Fools mock, but they shall mourn..
We're talking "great and spacious building" mocking. This is why Moroni felt inadequate. I think by the time he was alive, the language passed down to him had been altered so much. Also, it's quite possible that his written vocabulary was weak, perhaps that of the level of a child. What he tried telling us probably was not what ended up being engraved, but was still what was translated. I strongly believe that no matter what characters were on the plates, what ended up in print was the original intent of Moroni's message; what was in his heart, word for word. And it was someone like him, namely Joseph Smith, equally unequal to the task who the Lord chose to bring the record to light. The Lord chooses the weak things of the world to bring to light the great things of heaven.

Re: Fools mock, but they shall mourn..
"Forgive them for they know not what they do."
This applies to us all - because we all sin & think, feel & act out of ignor-ance.
Sometimes, we even put others down for expressing or doing things different than us.
When we realize & understand more, we are sorry (mourn) that we acted so ignorantly.
But I love what it says following the title quote... "and my grace is sufficient for the meek, that they shall take no advantage of your weakness; And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them. Behold, I will show unto the Gentiles their weakness, & I will show unto them that faith, hope & charity bringeth unto me - the fountain of all righteousness." -Ether 12:27-28
Cool, huh?!
God is love. -1john 4:8
IMO, Love is hoping & striving for what is best through trial & error (active faith).
This reminds me that we are supposed to have weaknesses - it's no crime!
It also reminds me of how we are not supposed to be "luke warm" or else we'll be "spit out."
People tend to project when they "mock" those who represent their fears or what they hate about themselves/humanity.
Pharasees tried to perfectly live the law & mocked those who didn't, even though as Jesus taught, the spirit of the law is more important.
At times in my life, I've been too afraid to screw up, so I'm paralyzed - & don't move at all. Like Scott Peck taught, a guided missle often gets off track throughout it's journey, & repeatedly has to correct its direction, but at least it's moving!

I'm surprised no one mentioned this one:
And [Elishah] went up from thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 2 Kings 2:23-24

I love that scripture, I love all of Kings, however I would prefer to pray and open their eyes to the angels round about and give comfort to those that need it. Elisha also had that other opportunity to destroy however he chose to blind them of their hate and guide them. It is unlike God to decree destruction, we must be like Jehovah who restrained himself until the complete farthest moment before sending the rain.
